You can change the build to suit your needs however you want, but there are a lot of benefits to keeping destruction. It boosts the power of your elemental weapons and offers a different method of attack, allowing you to target groups of enemies as opposed to individuals with the bow. You'll also lose out on the conductor special move, which allows you to drain mages magicka while remaining out of their line of fire.
As I said you could take destruction out altogether, but you could also easily add in smithing while remaining under level 50 and keeping destruction. Taking steel, dwarven and arcane smithing should be more than enough for this character.
