Most of the mer are just funny-colored people who live a little extra long. "Better at magic" is a trait that would be easy to give to a human race. Same with "likes animals" and "less flammable."
I don't want to sound like I think other people shouldn't like the Orsimer, it's just that they don't appeal to my personal tastes. And I have pretty high standards when it comes to fantasy species differentiation; I'm not just picking on TES. less
