Dark Souls III Boss Guides - Curse-rotted Greatwood

From filthy casul to legend, these boss guides will help even the lowest ranking Soul's players git gud at Dark Souls 3.

The Curse-rotted Greatwood is an optional boss found in the Undead Settlement, however, I recommend fighting him as you get the Transposing Kiln to make Boss Soul weapons. When entering the arena completely ignore the praying Undead and Workers and make for the large tree in the top left of the room, the tree will turn around and the boss fight will begin.

There is not much point killing the villagers in this fight as they will respawn infinitely until the second phase of the boss commences, that and the tree will kill any villagers that get close to it with its stomping attacks.

    Melee

Phase one is very easy for this boss, just run at his growth between his legs and hack away at it. The villagers will try to distract the player, but as mentioned above the tree will kill them. The tree is not completely harmless, however, his stomping attacks and spinning attacks will harm the player very heavily if they aren't prepared, however it's attacks aren't very frequent and this gives the player enough time to make an escape before being hit a second time.

Staying too close to the tree will cause the boss to lift itself off the ground and slam back down again, excreting a yellow liquid that will harm the player lightly if they remain in it for too long. At least one of the growths on it's body must be destroyed to begin Phase 2, the easiest being the aforementioned one on it's stomach. The boss cannot be damaged in any other way, it's growths must be destroyed to harm it.

This boss is very weak to fire, so those using weapons that can be infused should use the fire infusion, or if not, use a range of firebombs, black fire bombs, charcoal pine resin or charcoal pine bundles.

    Magic/Pyromancy

Sorcerers will have to use magic to destroy it's sacks from a distance unless they have a weapon also, in which case, the Melee section will help more than this section, which has more information for Pyromancers than anything.

Pyromancers have this easy, since the boss is weak to fire you can cheese Pyromancies from a distance until phase two initiates, although aiming might be a pain so keeping far enough away to dodge it's attacks and close enough to have a decent shot is advised. Pyromancers can also attack using their melee weapon to damage the tree, but unless it deals fire damage it will not be as effective as using their Pyromancies.

    Phase 2

The tree will initiate phase 2 by slamming it's body down onto the ground, causing the ground to fall down into a huge pit. All hollows and workers will be killed from this fall, but the player takes no damage.

After the fall, the tree will have a fleshy hand burst from it's stomach and the fight continues, the hand can be damaged like the the growths on it's body.

Same rules apply as above, except now the tree will be able to sweep and grab with it's hand to deal medium damage to the player. If the player gets too far away, the tree will stand up and fall flat on the player, try running between it's legs as quickly as possible as it stands and run around it's legs after it falls, as the hand will be exposed.

If you don't want to risk being smacked by it's hand then locate the other growths on it's body and beware of it's attacks as they will still be able to harm the player.
