Eurgh, bugs. So far I've only seen the hatchlings, I'm not looking forward to the grown up bloodbugs...

And yeah, I definitely use VATS, I see it as making things a bit more about character skill (albeit assisted by Vault-Tec) than player skill. If Velma is a competent shot, that shouldn't be completely messed up by my being utterly useless at shooty bang mechanics (which I am) or easily startled and freaked out by enemies that I hadn't realised were there (which, again, yep, me.) Of course, she doesn't have infinite AP so at some point she's reliant on me, but at least it lets her get in two to four shots before I have to take over.

    Really enjoying this :D

I had never looked at it that way before, Gnewna, thanks. Makes me feel better, as a fellow "lousy at shooty bang mechanics" myself.

I'm having fun too. Time to get another update up, but I'm gonna take a wee break. Been writing for NaNo all day.

Last time was all Vangelis, today I turn on some Brian Eno and Toto and listen to the Soundtrack of 1984's Dune. Granted, though, it puts me more in the mood of my main writing project, Straag Rod and my upcoming collaboration with the Lorc of Flowers, than the post-apocalyptic Commonwealth, but I am still writing, so here ya go. Just be prepared, I'm warning you right now, my move to TX is coming, so sessions may become a bit irregular. I do like this a lot, however, and will keep it up as my game save is on Steam Cloud and it'll be very easy to resume play if it is interupted. It is very similar to things I've done on Steam forums and you all seem to like it.

Well anyway, so I titled this "The Dark Side", eh? Yeah, as I implied in prior sessions, I was loathing having to make a settlement out of Tenpines Bluff and Abernathy farm. They are either too close, or the defense radius is quite poor, or the location isn't particularly useful. They would be, sure, fine for small scale rest stops for me. Private places where I can sleep and heal up if needed, but I really want to limit settlements the size of Sanctuary Hills or Starlight Drive In to a small handful in strategic locations.

There is a way to make a settlement yours without Preston Garvey's involvement.

How did I rp this decision in the game? She has taken time and effort to develop Sanctuary Hills and Starlight Drive In, providing a supply of food and water. The settlers under her care are starting to provide. Another settlement nearby could be a potential source of competition for valuable resources. It is better to have that under your control then, eh? Then the expansion suits you. It benefits you, to develop as you see fit.

I head over to Sanctuary Hills and spend the night. Then I head due south. South to begin my plan. I loook for the electrical tower and I see the structure in the distance.

It's a pretty location, nice and hilly and wide open to attack from all sides. It is also far too close to Sanctuary Hills for comfort. The farm is run by Blake Abernathy and he lives there with his wife Connie and daughter Lucy, their cat and their delightful cow, Clarabell. I take aim with my sniper hunting rifle and I aim for Blake's head. I fire.

Attempt 1: HA! This first attempt does NOT go well. I am overwhelmed by all of three. I manage to kill Connie and Lucy and then damn, Blake gets me good and I find myself back at Sanctuary Hills. Okay...

Attempt 2: I approach from a different angle and make it so that I draw out Lucy first, followed by Connie. Tehehe, Connie and her bat. This works well and Blake is, at first, unaware that I've murdered his family, continuing to pick his tatos. :D I aim for his head and do partial damage. Sheeeets, settlers are actually rather strong from an enemy standpoint. He nearly gets me again and forces me off his property and I regroup (read. Hit save on bed in Red Rocket) before heading back to finish the job. I dispose of the bodies and survey my new domain. It really is a pretty farm. I may make something of it later. A private farm, just for me, because the location really is quite lovely. Not so dead-looking as other places in FO.

I spare the cat and Clarabell because I have discovered something, something very, very cool, especially with regard to Miss Clarabell. :D

    Jet.

It's cheap to make, only requiring fertilizer and plastic, light as a feather, and sells for quite a bit. Yes, this girl is in the drug trade. Hey, I don't have local leader and I'll never get it, which means my choices will be limited. Like for example, my fiance is sitting pretty at about 15k caps at his level 32 character, even though he's spent like crazy on supply shipments and shops for his settlements. Me, in constrast, at level 18, only have about 4200 caps and I haven't really spent on anything. I'm not at this level at this point yet, by the way, I'm hovering between 14 and 15 at this point of this particular session. He has, however, level 10 charisma and Local Leader.

I trade in a few things. I use Pre-War Money as currency. Sells for more than a cap, so it's actually quite useful. I also trade in Jet, Stimpaks, other drugs that I find, and ammo (mostly 10mm and .38) for junk that contains rare materials.

So, yes, it is nice to keep Clarabell. Good little moo cow and I make her comfortable as I set up my small dwelling, hiding the Abernathy beds behind a series of walls. I eliminate all traces of them.

After a good night's rest, where I finally rid myself of my insomnia - LOL, love the diseases - I head back to Sanctuary Hills and check on my supply of fertilizer and plastic. Woah, like 70 fertilizer and 150 plastic. I forgot I had a brahmin cow here and fix up her enclosure and get to making myself some more Jet. I don't abuse things, only about 30 units for now. :D

It is time to rid myself of the other inconvenient settlement. Tenpines Bluff. Just follow the Railroad tracks past the Thicket excavations. Again, a rather pretty location, but impractically located on the map with very limited build space and scrapable materials. I must be improving my skills because they prove much easier to kill. I stash the bodies in the radroach infested ewwwww house that I freaking can't even scrap. What's up with that, Bethesda?

And I discovered that the same thing applies to Tenpines Bluff as it did in Abernathy, I can't scrap all the beds. This SUCKS. Only the one mattress in the radroach infested ewwww house. And I can't scrap the stupid cabin or ewwww radroach house, which means I'm REALLY limited with what I can do with this sheeeeeety shack for now.

Talk about tiny little living, am I right? But I get the job done, I have a drinking fountain and a small supply of Tatos should I need them. I am exhausted from all the scrapping and trying to fit this stupid bed in the shack so I go to bed.

And I wake up to the sound of people moving!

    Sheeeeet!

I ready my gun, expecting the worst when I go outside. Only to see the cute faces of a brahmin staring at me, the chests on her back. Apparently, Tenpines Bluff, cause I had really never visited much in my past playthroughs is on the caravan route of a Lucas Miller. We exchange words and he tells me of the value of wearing good armor, so I see if I can trade with him. Turns out he's got a Metal Helmet. It's one of the helmets that my Fiance is raving about and I trade some of my excess things for it. This is great. I had the Army Helmet before, which was great, but you can't mod it. This one, however, you can mod. :D

Side Note: I forgot to mention that in the Super Duper Mart, I had found a metal chest piece. Another boon to my armor set. I am perking Armorer. The only downside is that I will have rendered a lot of the special armors a moot point by the time I get to them in the game, so probably no Silver Shroud upgrades for me.

I create a save point and see that the Caravan is pulling out. I decide, why not?

Attempt 1: Die when Super mutants attack as we near a medical facility. Car blew up. Pesky Cars.

Attempt 2: My error, passed the downed merchants and engaged the super mutants. Like I mentioned a few entries back, shotguns have spread and I think what happened was that while I hit a super mutant, I also accidently hit one of the caravan guards, causing them to turn on me.

Attempt 3: There was a reason why I was doing this so many bloody times. Among the corpses of the downed merchants, I found a combat rifle. This is a BIG YES! Like Motty and I were talking somewhere on page five, SMode is all about DPS. Yes, standard hunting sniper rifles are great, but to reload after three shots? That's ridiculous. Now thirty or so shots? That's different and a game changer for sniping. My combat shotgun and rifle will now be the weapons I take to the Museum of Freedom.

It is this attempt that proves to be successful and we end up at Greentop Nursery, another location I had planned on acquiring for myself, but with the caravan there, I cannot, so I part ways and hideout at Taffington.

I am a chicken, a little wussy chicken. I can't, I just can't. So I go back to Greentop in the morning, the caravan is gone and then I have a good look at the area with my agent of death sniper rifle ready. I can actually make this settlement work rather nicely.  So, by my sheer laziness and my fiance's suggestion for civil planning, the residents of Greentop are spared my evil conquering ways and my "shoot 'em up" phase of acquiring settlements has ended. Though, granted, I'm pretty happy, I've eliminated the two probably silliest locations for large settlements, IMO. I'm curious to see where I am actually sent.

In the next session, I shall fulfill my destiny, as Mama Murphy likes to put it, and finally open the door to the Museum of Freedom. They've been cooped up in there for what? 80-some-odd game days? Whoops. LOL.  I shall go up against the Deathclaw and more dangerously, I shall finally let Preston Garvey and the *shudders* Longs into my life. As always, thanks for looking. :D

Whatch out Lissette, first its a couple brahmin....a little jet....next thing you know you are making buffjet, psychojet, jet fuel, ULTRA JET! You start taking it...using it...addictions follow but hey you are running around at warp speed like a madwoman with a shiny new combat rifle, your pockets filled with caps!!!.......... Where was the downside in that scenario again?....... ;)

Ok, I might need to bring this up in the Valentine Detective Agency, but what is it with the Fallout universe and the name "Abernathy"? I have never met anyone with that as a surname, but there are references to it all over the place. GOAT exams, farms... What gives?

Well at least we know how Lissette would handle getting old mister Abernathy out of his quarters.....

:D Ha! Hey, that would actually make a good dicussion. How would you answer those questions?

Yeah, I could see that path, however, the price of addictol is quite high and sobering to any bright ideas of relying on any of those drugs. Now the possibility would increase once she gets to Diamond City and has access to a regular doctor.

It's a city in TX, but it is also a surname in the states, with quite a few names linked to Boston. Here's a wiki on famous Abernathys

    Abernathy surname

I journeyed to Sanctuary Hills after my experience following Lucas, mostly to check and see if everything there was in order for the influx of new settlers I knew would arrive. Extra beds were put in storage, stuff rerranged a bit. Installed two heavy machine gun turrets at the gate. I also modded my newly acquired combat rifle. It did 10 less damage than the hunting rifle, but shoots at a much faster rate. I still can't add the standard stock, which sucks, but that's alright for now. Soon. I also mod that Chest Piece and my Metal Hat. This brings up DR to like 58 or something like that. A crappy raider leg is holding me back. :D My fiance says I'm doing rather well for my DR and damage output for my level. He says that Museum of Freedom is going to be easy and the Deathclaw will be nothing. I am still worried about the Deathclaw.

This brings me to about level 16 when I decide that the experience from the Museum of Freedom and Sturges' subsequent quest will bring me to level 17. Level 17 is quite important. It unlocks the second rank of Lone Wanderer. So, it's off to Concord I go.

I am still listed as "hidden" when I enter amid Preston fighting the Raiders. I whip out my new sniper combat rifle and aim. BAM! The raider goes down in one shot to the head. Granted, I aim pretty well on scope. It's basically me playing archery in Skyrim, which was something I was always good at, whether it's mounted combat, snek arch'ry, or non sneak, I can aim like that pretty well. Not in fast-paced stuff, but slower like that, I'm pretty good. I proceed through the maze of broken down rooms that was the Museum, shooting down raiders as I go.

Alright, my fiance was right, this was almost silly. I think I got hit like maybe twice, but my HP is rather sturdy and my DR is good so I can take a bullet or two and not blink. More annoying throughout the thing is that I get both thirsty and hungry. Haha, pause for a lunch break when Raiders are trying to find me. I'm not bored, but I do think I may have enjoyed the location more at around level 8 instead of level 16. That being said, I'm much more ready to make the trek to Diamond City at this level than I would've been at Level 8, so it balances.

I meet with Preston and his gang and mang, do I NOT pick the same responses as I did last time. I'm borderline rude with the man, but no matter what dialogue choice I make, I'm stuck fetching the bloody Power Armor. Time for some Death Claw.

Usually, people start mowing people down with the mini gun, right? Cause that's what the game wants you to do. It's like a mini tutorial on heavy guns and the use of Power Armor. YOu leap down and blow through the raiders and then there's the Deathclaw. In SMode this can be a huge challenge, especially early. Why put yourself in a position to take damage, I ask myself. Play with your strengths, Lis, not your weaknesses. And what are my strengths?

I don't even grab the Power Armor and minigun when I head to the roof. Yes, they see me, but they have to shoot up, whereas I have to shoot down. :D

Oh, it is almost comical. My fiance even stops to watch the massacre at the Museum of Freedom and we're laughing as I'm shooting.

"I'm gonna kill you dead. DEAD!" A raider says as he comes running down the street at full speed. Oh, he fell down.

And another, and another. A lone woman on a roof, armed with just a sniper combat rifle is laying waste to a group of raiders. This is what happens when you don't pick up that silly laser musket, when you wander around a bit before you take the quest. Then I hear the roar and see the remaining raiders go off in another direction. Finally worthy hunting. The sleeping beauty from the sewers has arrived. I had heard him snoring when I investigated the sewers of Lexington on one of my early sessions.

Am I going to finally don the armor and go down? Hell no! Why? Again, Lis, play to your strengths. It's why I perked sneak and rifleman. Fight smart, not hard even if it means less XP. You'll see this come into effect even more in the next session. The poor Deathclaw gets very frustrated as it charges down the street, swiping sandbags and rocks into the air, trying to find the little fly who keeps stinging him with awful bullets from the sky. While I stay safe in my perch on the roof. I hear Preston in the alcove outside next to me and together we hunt the Deathclaw.

"All clear." I hear him say after my final shot.

The Deathclaw hand sits in my residence in Sanctuary Hills. On a counter top. Was it too easy? Perhaps a bit, but at the same time, it was the result of me taking a very similar approach that I do in Requiem playthroughs in Skyrim. You prepare for major quests, know the enemy, know your strengths. That sort of thing. Go into a fight knowing you'll be victorious.

I actually struggle more on the way home. Too much loot, and I want to take it all home to scrap. This is finally achieved when I don the Power Armor and grab the minigun, giving me an extra, sheet, only 20 pounds. That's pretty miserable that I only get twenty extra. This is Lone Wanderer, kicking in. It really is one of the best perk groups in the game for SMode.  I take the twenty extra pounds though and lug all the crap - still overencumbered - back to Sanctuary hills. Haha, both legs are broken by then and I need to take a stimpak. So yeah, finally, I take a stimpak for the Museum of Freedom, when I'm lugging all the sheeeet home. I scrap my materials and opt for bed, ignoring Preston and crew until the morning. You all can sleep on the floor one more night.

The next morning, I speak with Preston, who sends me to Oberland Station! Yes! My fiance and I were just chatting a couple sessions prior that Oberland would be a decent choice as it's farther south and is smaller, so more manageable. I also speak to Sturges, who gives me the whole "Sanctuary" questline, building the extra beds, planting crops, adding security, whatnot. I now have 14 beds in sanctuary. Yes, all my settlements, because of my charisma, will be small. They'll be small, but mighty. The next day, I will make the journey back to Starlight to rest up before I take the trip to Oberland.

Completing the first Minutemen quest and Sanctuary accomplishes exactly what I want and I achieve level 17. My apologies for not having a perk list in the past few entries, but I just forgot due to the gameplay and I only after the Museum of Freedom did I check it. I had also been banking some perks because I knew Lone Wanderer 2 would unlock at 17. Rifleman 3 and Locksmith 3 unlock at 18, so I am saving perks based on what unlocks. A good strategy, no? When all the stuff is unlocked and then other others are still far off, I'll calculate what I'll need and then I'll see where I can start building up SPECIAL stats. Here are my level 17 perk choices.

    Rifleman 2/5

    Sneak 3/5

Lone Wanderer 2/4 - this is huge, now I have +100 carryweight. I mean, with freaking radstag stew and deep-pocketed armor, I carry about 300. The damage resist is also amazing.

    Armorer 2/4

    Gunnut 2/4

    Locksmith 2/3

    Aquagirl 1/2

    Scrapper 1/3

The Perception Bobblehead from the Museum of Freedom gives me a Perception of 5. Debating whether or not to do Demolitions expert, but I know I'll be training up Perception to get Sniper. Also on the fence with Science. I know sooooo useful, but... at the same time would she indeed have access to everything? How much knowledge do I want to give her? I mean this is part of the reason why I've avoided cap collector and the scounger perks. If it's too easy, where's the fun in that? Already the Museum was too easy and she doesn't have nearly what you'd consider endgame gear, but at the same time, she has gear that it makes sense that she'd carry. Both guns were lucky drops, which her luck is rather low at 2, so those drops mean something. I only have 2 legendary items and they are very crappy.

Right now, I see scrapper being done. She's taking advantage of what she's got, but I'm not making it any easier for her to find things. I'm about two gameplay sessions ahead of these updates, so I'll make a mental note to write down my HP and AP and Armor stats when I play today so we get a sense of how I'm doing. Is this the making of an interesting build? I'm not sure. I'm sure people have perked these things before. They made a lot of  bloody sense to me, so by default, others would perk them too. She's not particularly creative or SPECIAL, hehehe, but she's definitely a survivor. :D

    As always, thanks for looking.
