That's more like a co'up rather than a law, Thorien.

Oh come now.  There has to be a text. Lawless in comparison to what? Because right now, I'm seeing a martial society yes, but a society without law? No. They were too successful to be this. A society without law or organization is anarchy and Nords definitely have a pretty strong societal organization.

What you're describing here is basicaly any society before christians came.

Think about it. There is the Moot, right? Where they choose High King, probably the strongest one. How old is that tradition? Then think about the whole thing with Civil War. Ulfric takes Whiterun and right on the spot names the new Jarl. So it still works like that. The strongest dictates the law. Which means there is law, ever was.

And what prevents the law from changing too drasticaly? Customs.

I never said there's no law, only that in such a society the law is what the strongest dude states. Ulfric is the perfect example of this. Of course there is the Moot... but is the Moot really capable to stop someone like Ulfric?

Yes, that's the way all the ancient societies were, but I think it's not the best way to be.

The whole story of Ulfric is not a text, but it's an evidence.

Well, someone maybe can say that such a society is perfectly lawful, and it actually can seem successful if you look at it from the historical point of view. But from the point of view of someone actually living in that world? I think a society where the law is whatever the most badass killer says is a lawless society. I definitely wouldn't like to live in such. But that is merely my opinion.

Yeah, after all it's a pretty huge difference hiring someone with that kind of lineage or hiring some random thug who could be doing it for any number of reasons.

This, to me, seems like the main reason that there are no other mercenary guilds out there.  None have the same pedigree as the Companions and just wouldn't be able to compete.

Reman and Talos were quite badasses, not milk drinkers)) Not the case I'm talking about)

Maybe if we take this in-universe my point of view will make more sense?

Imagine your in a mead hall, around a camp fire or sitting around the hearth fire at home. It is a cold night, the wind is howling.

A bunch of Nords are downing their mead and eating their horker stew but apart from telling stories there isn't much for them to do at this hour. So one stands up and demands silence.

"My turn," he shouts, "lemme talk. So I met this milk-drinking Imperial in the tavern who was shivering in the cold like a lamb shivers when it sees a wolf. '"Come by the fire, you troll-brained fool'" I shouts, '"and listen to the tales of the heroes."'

The Nord is happy, his audience is engaged.

"So this puny little man in his wet robes sits next to me, all quiet like. I says, '"what brings you to Whiterun?"' He tells me, '"I am a scholar from the Imperial City seeking an book in a Dwemer ruin. I am looking for a bodyguard."'

"A body guard?" You my man are in the right place. You will find no finer warriors in all of Skyrim, excepting mebbe the Companions." The Nord slurps his mead, wipes his mouth with the back of his hand and wrings out the slops from his beard.

"So me an' me boys, we agrees to help him for a bag of gold and a share of the plunder. The chance to fight and test our mettle against the fabled metal monsters of the dwarves is something we can sing about in Shor's Hall until the end of days."

Lol)) This is hilarious))) What I was imagining was some greedy merchant hiring Nord mercs to beat up his concurents))

Well, that basically sums it up for Nord Mercs of Skyrim.

I thought this topic was going overboard when they started talking about law and stuff...
