The Ancient Nordic Pantheon

it would seem that the underlying assumption that Nords worshipping the divines in totem form is false.

Absolutely, that book is just another example of the usual Imperial imperiority complex . You can blame me for that, as I said I deliberately chose that direction in order to make the discussion more accessible. Here's Tom on that very issue, followed by my reply:

We're wrangling with a completely different mindset here. Why shove Imperial gods onto a culture that predates it? It only shows favoritism or suggests that the Imperial pantheon is the "true" way by which others are judged.

I hear you Tom, but we're doing this because another in-game source - The Dragon War says:

Certain scholars believe these primitive people actually worshipped the divines as we know them, just in the form of these totem animals. They deified the hawk, wolf, snake, moth, owl, whale, bear, fox, and the dragon.

So the scholars might be wrong but it's still fun to try, no?

We're just going to have to disagree on the Nine. I don't think there have to matched perfectly, and they don't.

You're preaching to the choir about shoe-horning the Nine into the Animal Totems Tom, as you know from my Faces of Akatosh discussion. However, in this thread we aren't doing anything more than what Imperial scholars always have done, those would have you believe that Alkosh and Akatosh are the same being.

I'm glad you've given it a new lease of life though Vaal.

I'm with you about Tsun. I have no idea how he ignores the connection to the whale. Unless, he may view the whale bone bridge as a (Arkayish) path to the afterlife. Tsun guards the path, determining who may or may not enter the true Nordic afterlife - the Hall of Valor. In-game, bears are often seen on or near roads and pathways in the forest. Just spit-balling here, though. Getting into MK's head is a dangerous venture. :P My question is why wait until now, almost four years after the game's release, to start giving what appears to be serious answers to these questions.

There was some interesting thoughts on the Reddit discussion when this came out. Pilaf the Defiler liked the idea that Tsun is the Bear and the bear guards the Stone of Snowthroat which according to MK is a cave.

It almost seems as though MK was deliberately trying to snub us, or even me personally, waiting until my totem builds are out before releasing info that contradicts our/my assumptions

Seriously, though, I'm with Phil on the general consensus.  At first my reaction was "Oh no!", but then it became apparent that this document, while interesting, leaves plenty of gaps and is open to ... maybe 'criticism' is the wrong word.

But I do like how it suggests a break with the Imperial pantheon, so the Nordic pantheon becomes its own thing.  We all already knew/supposed that anyway, so it's not news, but like many others I wish a bit more of this had crept into the actual game.

This may even give me a new approach to some roleplay opportunities.  Talos is described in rather Mithraic terms - I wonder how a Dragonborn character might look if we take some influence from late Roman military mystery religions, such as the cults of Mithras and Sol Invictus?  What about an Imperial character who ascribes to such belief?

Could you mind eleaborating on this further Paul, my knowledge of these mystery cults is less than that of the Greco-Roman pantheon of Jupiter, Neptune, etc/

Been a long time, but what I recall is that Mithras was specially venerated by the later Roman soldiers.  He's something of a Christ-like figure, in the Eastern mystery tradition:  virgin birth, transcends humanity.  The cult was hedged about with some secrecy.

Of Sol Invictus (which is just Latin for Invincible Sun), I know little, except that it too was late Roman in origin and influenced by near Eastern mystery traditions.  It was a kind of temple you could build in Rome Total War: Barbarian Invasion

Probably Wikipedia will get you some better info!

Wow, thanks for the link - missed that one!

So, I had done research earlier on the totems for my BFB chapter of Straag Rod using this source initially and I remember for a fact that the arrangement of the gods were exactly like how you presented your initial post. Now, have a look.

    Ancient Nordic Pantheon

They have adopted some of the changes that were discussed here. This is not the same source I looked at back in late 2014 or early 2015. I also have problems with Tsun being the bear and always associated Orkey with the fox and Shor with the snake. I don't mind switching them, if that is indeed the lore now, but I'm not nuts, the page was different in the link above before. The pictures were even different, direct pictures of the temple walls, not drawings. Did they update that page is I guess what I'm asking.

Well, I might be a little nuts.

No you're not crazy. It looks like they have taken that Dev Doc as fact and presented it as such. For me the revelations came too late to impact my personal interpretations. Stuhn/Stendarr being the Bear just felt right.

whew! That makes me feel better. Is it fact though? I'm okay with fox and snake in their roles, though part of me really loves the image I presented of the Eagle eating the snake, and I'll need to lose the snake sex jokes. Eagle eating the Fox just doesn't quite have the same impact. But blah, will keep Stuhn as is. Tsun is freaking guarding the whalebone bridge, dunno how much more whale you can get than that. They didn't make it a bridge of bear bones.

Or, I keeps it as is and enjoy my snake imagery, which to me is far more powerful. It's not like Skyrim Nords probably know much of the Ancient Pantheon anyway and more than likely an Elf would get it wrong too.

Eagle eating the snake, and I'll need to lose the snake sex jokes.

     Love it!

There is very little "fact" in TES Lis, as you know. It was probably fact that the info in the design doc was the original intention but the final result is quite different. Also, it is incomplete. Where's the Jhunal?

I'd say it's an interesting insight into early development processes but little else. Yet that's just my take. Lots can be read into it and interpretations made from it and so that makes it as valid as any other source, no?
