As far as gear to get you started, I highly suggest in investing in a digital sketch pad. Nothing expensive is required. Mine barely cost 60 bucks. Photoshop CS 2 as well as Gimp are free and make excellent painting programs.

Try to familiarize yourself with working exclusively with digital material. Dont stress out about quality. Play around with the features of photoshop. The brushes the filters, everything. I find that following along with photoshop effect tutorials is a great way learn what everything does.

Once you get down to drawing, certain aspects of the body will give you a harder time than others. Hands, and faces are particularly hard to draw. body proportions are also going to be difficult to grasp initially. I found this link extremely helpful.

Time for a little bit of necromancy

I know that there will be light coming from behind/above due to the moon and stars, but would there be any other sources?

    The other moon

I don't know about other light sources from behind...I mean Oblivion was pretty light in general (I'm assuming the background is a screenshot) and I'm pretty sure Guards patrol the districts with torches, could it be torches.

(Or perhaps I have no idea what I'm talking about...that seems likely )

I'm not even sure if the second moon would be visible, since the one you can see is a crescent moon, I'm not all that familiar with their cycle. But in general yeah behind/above.

    Necromancy

I'm well aware that my laptop's screen is brighter than some peoples, so can as many people as possible please tell me whether this is too dark?

Perhaps but before we worry about that we got to incorporate the lighting necessary to make that char feel more like part of the background.

PS: Thanks for bringing this thread back to life

Yeah, before I can start on the lighting I need to work out how to "brighten" the walls that she is standing next to, using GIMP which I'll probably end up doing a google search for which will be interesting.

I also added a link to this on the group's front page since it was lacking one and I had to search through a several pages of discussions before I located this again

Its a dark cave so the entire background doesnt necessarily need to be brightened. The area around the mage should be brightened slightly so his features are more noticeable. But that can be accomplished by incorporating the proper lighting. The flame in his hand will cause the area behind him to be brighter than the surrounding cave wall.

The thing is I don't now how to brighten the area around her through GIMP.

By the way what do you think of the proportions?
