Stamina Regeneration - just how useful is this, really?

(Let's leave aside things like Vegetable Soup that make Stamina entirely redundant.)

People (myself included, probably) suggest taking perks like Wind Walker, that increase the rate of Stamina Regen, as though these are really handy.  But does it make that much of a difference in practice?  Stamina regenerates on its own, of course, and if you're doing things that use Stamina (sprinting, power attacking, bashing, or zooming with a bow), it won't regen at all anyway.

Aaaaand of course now I'm thinking of making a build that revolves around Stamina regen.  Damn.  Well, has anyone played around with this mechanic before?  Is it fairly pointless, or actually useful?

Stamina regen is great when you are engaged in long battles. It goes like this - unleash a number of power attacks, bashes etc. and then proceed with regular strikes until stamina recharges. The faster your regeneration is, the more often you'll be able to unleash your hard hitting attacks. Vegetable Soup makes you able to unleash one power attack after another which renders the regen aspect useless

    Thanks!

Think I'll work on a build that leverages the Stamina regen aspect anyway.  Soups schmoups :P

I meant *no* soups!  Just seeing what it'd be like to work on Stamina Regeneration as the main 'trick' of a character.  I wrote up a few paragraphs so far (rather optimistically; no testing done yet):

Stamina seems to be widely considered the least useful of the three attributes in Skyrim. Even characters such as warriors that rely on it as a constant resource don’t arguably need to invest in it, because with a few easily obtained items, Stamina can be rendered more or less redundant. Stews allow a character to constantly power attack or bash. Potions, brews, and many foods rejuvenate a character instantly. Enchanted weapons can absorb Stamina directly from a stricken foe.

But all of these approaches also have their drawbacks, albeit minor. Vegetable soup junkies must scour the land for mundane ingredients, and slurp down their slurry every few minutes. Potion gatherers must similarly lug pounds of vials and tonics. And Stamina absorption is a costly enchantment, requiring the wielder to regularly recharge his weapon.

This build aims to turn Stamina management from a slightly irritating chore into a “fire and forget” system. We’ve seen several builds that have made Health Regen and Magicka Regen the centerpiece; this is my take on a build that leverages Stamina Regen, and what that means not just for your green bar, but for other aspects of your character.

Anyway, yeah - just some ideas/speculation so far.

    Nice!

I once tried to push it to its max, used Wind Walker, spectral drum, potions, enchanted gear, Adrenaline Rush. In the end it was very fast, but I ended up with another question - what to do with it  Looking forward to seeing your answer!

I've never been arsed to make soups and in Requiem you can't really use them unless out of combat, so there goes spamming soup. Look forward to your build Mr. England.

Realistically, Stamina Regen is the least useful attribute buff simply because it is "turned off" whenever you're actively using Stamina -- sprinting, bashing, power attacking, etc. The only reason to invest in Stamina Regen is if you intend to do a lot of that stuff, yet ironically, the more of it you do, the less time your Stamina Regen will actually be active.

Notwithstanding the infinite Stamina glitch, there are other ways to completely mitigate the managerial side of it. Simplest would just be to use a weapon with Absorb Stamina, combined with Fortify Destruction enchantments to reduce/eliminate the charge of using said enchantment. Of course, the simplest option tends not to be the most rewarding, so I'm certainly curious to hear your ideas, Paul.

One of my questions will be just how big of a Stamina pool you really need if you focus on the regen.  Because you're right - I don't want to have an aspect of an attribute that just isn't needed.

So I'm thinking, aim for modest Stamina increases on level-up, not favoring the green bar too much.  Push Stamina regen.  Put lots of points in Health.  Probably looking at Archery (zoom), Block (bashing), One Handed, Light Armor.

Thinking no-crafting or low-crafting.  I'd love to get the passive stuff just working with no need to grind.

I'm thinking this also might be a decent build to experiment with bleed damage - something I haven't done yet.  The reasoning is that you can stack multiple bleeds, but a power attack is slower than quick slashes (if not 2/2 Dual Flurry/Elemental Fury, which, we'll see) - so you bash, slash, slash, regen; power attack, slash, slash, regen; etc.  So war axe(s) + Targe of the Blooded.

Redguard seems the obvious choice for the racial, but Adrenaline Rush might be overkill.  Orc in the load screen is calling me.  I'll need a good lore/RP angle - I almost never *start* a build with the mechanics, so this is uncharacteristic for me.  Of course, the mechanics are very much still in question :)

    Dunno yet!

Soups are too good in Requiem!  They last 2 hours real-time I think - much longer than in vanilla - and essentially mean the end of your Stamina worries.  I'm a little annoyed at how great they are, actually.  :P
