I have a question though, do we have gryphons in ES: Arena? Hmm, I'm wondering if they didn't lose these animals with the good ol' Oblivion Crisis like they lost their Tower. Because why not smash the Atlmer people to bits.

Has anyone else done the quest in King Haven's Pass? Because the ending caught my eye (also Spoilers for anyone that hasn't done it yet):

Unfortunately I forgot to grab the screenshoots of the Tablets that Mehdze is talking about and I couldn't interact with them again, but from what they described Goblin society on Summerset was apparently advanced (they knew how to farm and mine for metal ores) enough for the Elves to treat them as equals or at least to view them as being worthy of negotiating with. If the elves hadn't been dicks we might have been able to advance to the point of other societies in Tamriel.

I'm questioning the actions of the Not-Yet-Superiors :P They weren't Altmer when they first arrived in Summerset and as such were not yet Superior.

Hmm. Yes! I do remember that quest. I think I managed to take screens of the two out of three tablets, the quest bugged on me a bit, so I got only two. Can´t access my library right now, but as I remember it, it was that Goblins were already on the Isles when Aldmer arrived and began colonizing and in the beginning the Aldmer had some kind of trade agreement with the goblins. But eventually, they went all Superior and broke that agreement, taking the Goblins´ land and enslaving them.

Note, this is just from my memory right now. I´ll go through my library later and see how much of this I have, otherwise it would be nice to go through the dungeon with second character and take more pics.

From what I remember the Goblins were there long before the Aldmer, the Aldmer showed up and started colonising while trading with the Goblins. They then negotiated safe travel for Aldmer through the pass since they wanted to be able to get from Lilandril (I think) to Shimmerene faster. Eventually they decided that the pass would make a great location for a fortress and offerred to buy the land from the Goblins, when they said no the Aldmer realised it was because the the extensive underground networks the Goblins had created and so offered them land on the eastern side of Summerset to resettle in exchange for the pass to which the Goblin Chiefs agreed to discuss the offer. The third tablet ends with a comment about the King's patience not being that great or something. Which I believe then leads to the Aldmer attacking.

The only pic in my folder of the place is of the loading screen:

Not sure why I didn't take more, perhaps a small feeling of dissatisfaction? One of the things I was looking forward to is exploring the goblin slavery issue, perhaps even encountering a few rebellious Altmer who still keep one or two, or dialogue about how life was easier back then. But unless I missed it, pretty much the only time it comes up is in this quest. Is it expressly stated when the goblins were freed? I'm guessing it was one of Queen Ayrenn's decrees because we know of the Veiled Heritance's dealings with one tribe. I wonder when the practice started up again? If that FG dude's dialogue in TES IV is anything to go by, some High Elves of the Third Era were pretty partial to them.

Still, it's interesting to see a source to indicate goblins are native to the Isles, and those tablets are primary sources to boot.

I have never played the early games, but references to them crop up in Redguard game books at a quick glance. I'm not sure if eradicating the population would be all that doable as, in theory, the gryphons could fly away. But I can certainly picture the Welkynar flying in to help defend the isles before dropping one by one from the skies until so few remainn who know the way to bond with the creatures. Then the knights become like the Blades, maybe, hidden and struggling to survive.

Or maybe the failure of the Welkynar to save the day made the Altmer people lose faith in their revered gryphon? Or maybe they still hold the animal in the highest esteem and the Thalmor have capitalised on that, making of them mounts reserved only for the favoured few to demonstrate just how great those individuals are in a subversive display of Dominion propaganda? It's uncharted waters, so pretty exciting in terms of possibility!
