ammo availability is not affected by SM...however, it adds to carry weight.

So having a central hub with an ammo factory to re-supply at seems helpful. If only your stored ammo could be shared by supply lines! Now that would be useful...but no.

Aye, forgot about carry weight. Might look for a mod that decreases ammo in the world, though I'm not sure that would balance well during combat.

I'm now level 31 on my commando build in SM. Not really had any ammo problems.

I have a .38 pipe rifle modded to sniper, 10mm Auto pistol (Quickdraw Powerful 10mm Auto Pistol (Suppressed) Not as good as Deliverer. But it's auto, suits commando build. Uses 25% less AP.) and Overseer's Guardian modded as medium range sniper but words okay up close as well.

Maybe having three ammo types made it less of a problem?

I would drop off ammo at a variety of places so if I was running low I could pick up earlier excess ammo. Mystic Pines is a good place to store things as it has no bad guys and is central.

Looking forward to trying the new DLC.

I think my issue is I went straight away for spray and pray and then kiloton rifles - both .45. I was ok for a bit, but tromping around far harbor had me emptying my clips constantly. Then I wanted december's child and realized it was way too early to bother since 5.56 rounds are scarce that early. Literally - I was at level 15 with all three guns. I just went too fast. Should have been using an auto pipe rifle for lesser foes.

    Still learning :)

Ok update: I built the ammo plant.

It takes 2 steel and 1 fertilizer to make 10 rounds (of .45 ammo).

A 25 shipment of fertilizer is about 600 caps. Steel is basically free.

So 250 rounds for 600 caps = 2.4 caps per round. Although you could pop some grape mentats and get that down a bit.

Normal cost of .45 ammo at a vendor is 6 caps per round.

So yes it's cheaper in the long run. Maybe a bit unnecessary but sort of fun too.

Brahmin troughs  at every settlement and you make quite a bit of fertilizer at no ongoing cost. Just need a settlement beacon to "attract them" initially.

Can't remember where but there is a wandering trader that sells Brahmin as well, so you could in theory get 2-3 at each settlement and essentially be rolling in s**t. ;).

You can also use the cages from Wasteland Workshop to acquire brahmin more reliably. Or you can just use the shit to make jet and then use jet as your new currency.

Yup, definitely the case. Before "survival mode" took over my FO4 life I had at least 2 brahmin in most of my settlements and was rolling in Jet and making huge amount of caps.
