2 For the readers of TSC, what are the top three moments where a writer’s path has caused you to cringe, shy away or even shake your head over the writer’s decisions?

Believe it or not, I actually compiled a list. Ahem:

    • -Gary Stu's/Mary Sue's
    • -Long chapters. Ridiculously long chapters.
    • -Lemons! The foul and nasty kind.
    • -Dark broody characters dressed in black with red eyes and hair etc. In short, edgelords.
    • -Too many lore inconsistencies (whether if it's Elder Scrolls or not) that makes me just want to smash the keyboard with my head.
    • -Express shipping. Only 8 chapters in and they're already a thing? Unacceptable!
    • -The typical 'Chosen One' trope.
    • -Self-Insert fics. There are some good ones but generally all are bad.
    • -Any ship that makes no sense what so ever. AlduinxfemaleDB? How... why... I don't want to even know.

So I looked up where Mary Sue originates from and lol. Had no idea it comes from Star Trek fanfic. Interesting.

    What´s with the lemons?

Dark broody characters dressed in black with red eyes and hair....What if you are an Orc or Dunmer with red eyes that has to go on wedding? That would explain dark and broody mood and black clothes. xD

Chosen One. You know, I´m not big fan of that either, but in TES it´s kind of a difficult to avoid that. I mean, not exactly the Chosen One destined to save the whole world and smile during that, but the type where one of the damn Daedra or Gods mark you. That´s the thing with TES, Daedra like to meddle and mortals are just pawns - could be said about gods meddling too, to a certain degree.

So for the sake of the discussion, let´s steer it towards the Chosen One. What´s ok and when it becomes too much for you, Kaiser?

I'm okay if the character doesn't fully accept that role or has doubts, makes him/her more of an interesting character.

The trope becomes too much to me when writers hype it up. Let say this warrior is destined to be the great dragon slayer, king, Harbinger, Arch-mage, Listener, Guildmaster.... I mean geez, I know he's the Chosen One, but that doesn't mean he's the Chosen One for everything.

Ah, right. So Chosen One combined with Mary Sue then. The master of everything + he is destined for it. Or he is the master of everything because the destiny told it. That right?

Yeah basically the equivalent of your character finishing Skyrim 100%

    That drives me crazy too.

And yes, Karves, that is the origin of the Mary Sue.

    *wince*

Believe it or not, I thought it was a custom here to name yourself after your character when I first joined the site after reading Sotek-jo's work, I thought it was some kind of fun role-play. Then I realised nobody else was doing it! I know Sotek-jo had his reasons for choosing to write like this, but I literally only did so to conform. Yeah, I'm spineless like that...

    Now the name's stuck.

Sotek´s weird. There´s no difference between his writing and him. He´s werewolf in real life too I have no doubt about that xD

What I meant by self-insert fics are stories where you're actually drop into a fictitious world, probably with some degree of knowledge about said world.

    Oh...

    Well, this is awkward.

I suppose that goes to show how little I know about literary devices.
