Other people it is that inspire me, when I first arrived on the Vault I selfishly played every build that took my fancy, it was only then I decided it was time I put something back, now further down the line, with new Hosts in Skyrim CB, the announcement of an event was enoughe to inspire me to create something else, as for the future, I will have to see how my most recent build fairs, will it end up in a death match, and be deleted? who knows, but one things for sure, the announcement of further competitions, and events will further inspire me to create more, and more, and hopefully better builds for the future.

That's exactly how I started, it's a deep rabbit hole Bones, but Wonderland is nothing if not fun!

Hmm, for me I usually have a couple of things that I want to do at the same time so I smash them together and then throw them at a wall to see how well the stick. Mage + Brawler? Yeah that worked. Lizard + Blood mage that is actually blood mage and not a mage masquerading as a blood mage? Yeah that works.

I've also been inspired to make builds purely by things that annoy me. Such as how pretty much everyone that's created a build around Mephala and/or her Ebony blade has presented her as a one dimentional character only interested in murder. By the eight she's more then that! :P Or for people that have played Fallout 4 and met the guy impersonating Preston Garvey, well I got really annoyed that bethesda hadn't included the same for use the players in Skyrim so I set out to prove how it could be done.

As for artwork, well I'm the opposite of everyone else. My builds inspire artwork since I create my own :D

Well as I've only made one build, and that was for an event, I think I have to say events, but that event was perfect for me. So I guess trying to make stuff in games be something else, which is why I liked that event so much, and it's the main thing I enjoy about RP as well.

But for things that make me want to build, I love reading other fantasy settings and getting inspired by that. This goldmine has given me a tonne of ideas, but I can't be arsed to do anything about those ideas (while the link looks dodgy, it seems to be alright to me).

I'm surrounded by inspiration. It is not as good as one would think. I need to graduate at some point. But it is what it is. I'm a part of my college FRP, Game Development, Cinema clubs and I also work with groups that make various CONs in my country so I'm exposed to all kind of different talks about literature, gaming, and tv every day. I can't stop thinking "Hmm, that's interesting. I wonder Ig I can do a similar character in Skyrim... or Fallout.".

All kinds of things inspire me to build: sometimes it's lore, sometimes it's a character from outside TES, sometimes it comes simply from reading other builds or taking part in conversations on this site, and frequently it comes merely from a desire to try something in Skyrim that I hadn't tried before.

While inspiration for me can come from a combination of any of the aforementioned things, perhaps the one thing that inspires me most is the idea of contradictions. Some perverse part of me likes taking a character type and turning it a bit on its ear: High Elf brawlers, healers that wail away on enemies with maces, two-handed melee spellcasters, Altmer Stormcloaks, warrior builds that don't perk any warrior skills, melee characters with no armor, characters who hate being in Skyrim but whose greed keeps them there, spirits who want to bring peace to the land by killing everything on it, great mages who align themselves with thieves, fish-out-of-water characters, and etc.--those are the builds I love to play, write, and read about :D

@Liss:  I love story driven playthroughs, my most story centric build would be the Cursed in which I basically retell the Wolfman in Skyrim.  My problem with this approach, and it is not something any of your builds are guilty of, is when the story overtakes the build.  On several occasions I've thought to my self "This isn't a build so much as a Profile" and we have a group for people to share their roleplay profiles.  But my thoughts on this are better left for a future discussion.

Yeah, I understand you and I have caught myself wondering the same thing at times, though I am glad you don't question that with my stuff. Whew!! It is very important to find a balance with these types of builds, where the story enhances, but doesn't dominate the build.  But for me, right now, this approach seems to be working. Other things, of course, inspire me too, and many of them have been covered by others in this thread.

I kick myself especially for not mentioning are the the limitations imposed by Events as sources of inspiration.  Challenges like can I beat the game this way are always super fun springboards for creativity.

@John LeBlanc - very cool that you brought up in game scenes.

And then there's dirty jokes. Dirty jokes and phalic symbols. That inspired the Freelancer though the Lusty Argonian Maid inpsired it too. A story with phaliic symbols galore.

It used to be mostly art and images I would find. Now it is pretty much only lore. I love reading it and creating characters accurate to the lore and set around specific archetypes and classes is really fun to plan.

Hey!, I'm going to create builds!, I had never created one, but inspiration came to my mind, I have two Builds I want to create (I'm not going to say anything, because I like to post the full work instead of post something incomplete and will take me sometime to have it complete :P), I love mods I think they makes the game so much rich and interesting and I'm going to create Mod Builds, with the particular gear, weapons, quests, side quest and ways of play. Respect the question what made me start to think on creating builds I can say totally are two things, my gameplay with mods, and a story I'm making, I think creating Buils immortalizes the gameplay and the character "style", also a lot more builds would come due my story have a lot particular characters

Oh and also I have to say I started to think on Builds when my character "grow up" and get stronger, the gear found on his journeys and the challenges what he had makes him to get particular ways of gameplays and some "combos" with gear, weapons and spells was used and I started to use them periodically

This will be really cool, love the site!! :)

That's an excellent discussion :D I get inspired by everything, be it from a real-life character, TES lore, a character from a different game, books, music, drawings/images, other builds or just a character from a movie. Sometimes I even get inspired by just testing different armor combinations/weapons/spells in the testing hall.

Mostly lore right now. The ability to finally screencap has eliminated the art thing in a way, so I enjoy finding ways to subvert lore or find gaps I can fill. I like filling holes, what can I say? I am exploring the volva of Norse tradition right now, hope to get something concrete up soon.

But to be honest we are surrounded by inspiration here. It's hard not to absorb some from the creativity of our members.
