Oh, okay, I was unaware of that. Thank you for pointing it out!

Who exactly cursed them and why?

Zeht who is the Yokudan god of farms turned his back on Tall Papa so Papa turned the land in to desert.

Nirni turned the land to harsh sands because she was jealous of the khajiit and there love for Azurah.

Those gods sound way more interesting than the 9 or 8 or whatever they are now

There aren't nine or eight. Divines is a category like the Gods of Olympus. Yes, there are roughly 12 gods of Olympus, but there are still thousands of other gods in the real world.

The 8/9 are a compromise from Alessia on the 8 gods that equal the least common denominator between most cultures within the empire and its allies.

These are just the gods most cultures worship in some form or another. They all view these 8 as very different, and there are other gods these cultures worship that different cultures don't. Nords worship Stuhn, Tsun, and Shor unlike other races. Bosmer worship Y'ffre. Altmer worship Magnus. Etc, etc, etc.

Although what you said is true, what I think Fool meant by "The Eight/Nine" was the Divines as defined by the Alessian temple, which is what it usually means. And since The Divines are a compromise, made up of watered down versions of the most common gods of all the cultures in the empire and designed as a way to please the majority of its citizens, it makes sense that they would be boring when compared to either the cultural versions of themselves or the other gods of those cultures. It's like pop music: watered down and liked by the majority, but really boring when compared to most other types of music.
