So it's dangerous to have black soul gems in the inventory when they are filled with non-black souls? Also, if the black soul gem can still absorb energy, even when filled, can it absorb soul parts from other soul gems?

I'm actually rethinking Conjuration now. Conjuring creatures from Oblivion and constantly creating mental bonds with them will corrupt a person, making him closer to these creatures and more ruthless with less regard for life. I now have questions for how the Conjuration scrolls and staves will work, but I guess these will be answered in the articles to come

Interesting thought, Vazgen, but I think the other soul gems are safe from absorption, if you are referring to anything less in size than a black soul gem.  You are correct that they are dangerous to have, as it is possible to have some of one's life force sucked into it.  We are not aware of any specific wards that could be cast to protect oneself in that case, but perhaps there could be?

I have to agree with you also about Conjuration...I think it would be very difficult to protect oneself for long when making these types of summonings, especially since one has to open one's mind to the world of Oblivion in order for them to work.

I was thinking of a black soul gem filled with petty soul lying in the chest with a bunch of filled petty soul gems. I was thinking it would be possible to come back one day and find only filled black soul gem and bunch of empty petty soul gems

Hey Vazgen, sorry for my delay here.  I have been thinking about this, and I cannot provide a definitive explanation at this point.  I can make a case for either viewpoint, so I have to reserve rendering a judgment on this issue for a later date.

I thought about it some more and now think that soul gems of any kind are preventing the soul to leave them, so they don't emit energy that can be absorbed. The black soul gems become something like a "black hole" in this case, absorbing energy and not letting it leave the gem. Can lesser soul gems be made black through necromantic rituals? Or only the grand soul gems can be made black?

I agree...I want to say that the other soul gems are simply a container, but the ritual for creating a black soul gem makes it crave souls, if that makes sense.  I like your analogy of a black hole, and I think it is very fitting for the fate of a soul that is entrapped in one.  Only grand soul gems can be changed into black ones, you are correct.  The whole thought of soul gems really is disturbing.

The Azura's star quest is now having a whole other meaning to me! The corrupted star might even eventually absorb all the soul energy in Tamriel, feeding Malyn Varen in the process!

@ Vazgen regarding Azura's Star...I again think you are correct.  As a player, we think, "Wow, this is such a useful artifact."  Yet, the implications behind such an artifact are quite sinister indeed, considering it comes from one of the "good" Daedra.  I am betting those will be explored in the continuation of the Daedra series that Vix started.

Thanks AFG!  We have about three more articles in the works to complete on our series of magic, so hope you will stay tuned for more!  Hope it can be helpful to all in their character creation, whether role play or story or CB or simply playing the game!  And no worries...glad you had a vacation!

How do you think things like the Skull Of Corruption fit into this. Harnessing dreams for magical power?

Do Deadra themselves also get magic from the same source? Or do Deadra draw magic from some other source in oblivion?

Like I can't imagine the Deadric princes relying on the connection to Magnus.

I love this article and lore because it makes roleplay so much more in depth when you know more about the world of Skyrim.
