Dragon of the East - A Skyrim Retelling

  • January 15, 2016

I've just read through Arcs 1 and 2 Okan, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Dar-Meena and Falura remain my favourites but I like that you've still fully fleshed out all the characters, something I've noticed with a lot of stories with constant character changes is that some can be left a bit dull, some are overused and others are just too rare to appreciate, you've managed to keep each character and chapter interesting which is really awesome.

I'm eagerly awaiting the next chapters Okan, definitely some awesome stuff going on here

It's been almost a month since my last official update. I'd be brief, but... there's a lot to say!

You'll notice that my current word count for Kindredfire has surpassed 46k. However... there is something I should clarify about this number.

It represents the total number of words I've written since I started writing this story. Not all of these words are actually in the story itself. About 8k of these words are currently in my SCRAPS document; that is, writing I've set aside because I didn't like the way it sounded.

The actual novel itself is currently around 36k. I may yet pull stuff I've written from the scrap bin and use it later down the line, but that's not likely. The reason I show the total, though, is for my own sake. If I posted my novel's word count, as is, the number would occasionally go down. And that, from a weird psychological standpoint, would really depress me.

Here's the way I look at it...

If I write a 1000 words, then later scrap ALL of them in favor of better writing, that doesn't make those 1000 words useless. In fact, those 1000 words were necessary. I needed to write slop first before I could make something good.

As I continue to write, I hope to get better at making a clean first draft.

But this draft? Dirty and patchy as hell.

I still love it like a child, though. A smelly, poop-stained child.

    ANYWHO.  -.-'

I'm about 8 chapters into the story itself and just started chapter 9. I don't know how many chapters there will be altogether.

The picture at the top of this post? It's a random image from deviantart, but it seemed to have a few amusing similarities to some aspects of my story. Take that for what you will.

So am I ready to tell a little bit about the story itself?

    Mmmmm... Almost...

I will say it's a story about a world ruled by dragons, where fire breathers (called Kindlers) are the mages of dragonkind. The whole story revolves around the system of magic I've created. I've come up with a nice tagline for the novel: "Discount Brandon Sanderson." x___x

...Seriously, though, it's turned into a love letter to some of my favorite fantasy stories and, on that account, doesn't reinvent the wheel. But I have to write it. It's got too many fun ideas for me not to.

I'll make it as good as I can, even if that 'good' ends up being really bad. I'll at least be able to say, "Hey, it was my first try, alright?"

I hope to post some chapters from it in the future. At least 1-3. Definitely 1-3.

Oh, and uh... DOTE. Still gonna write it. When this is done.

    I promise.

    Cross my heart.

Lol, great analogy. I'm looking forward to it

Availability is going to be an issue. I'm not sure how to approach it.

I'd love for folks around here to read it and give feedback, but I'd be very hesitant to release it to the public for free. I'm not delusional in thinking my first novel is going to be publisher-worthy (by ANY stretch), but there's still the issue of intellectual property.

I'll think of something, though. I really do want loyal readers of DOTE to get to see what I'm spending all this time on.

'Course... I have to finish it first... So I'll just focus on that. XP

That's not just a RANDOM image from deviantART, it is the artwork of Sandara, one of my favourite fantasy digital artists! If her work is similar to what the universe within Kindredfire looks like, I am really going to have to buy it when you're done...

You may find it interesting to know that I like your writing more than I like Brandon Sanderson's - I never really got into his books, no matter which series I tried!

Yeah, Sandara's got some great stuff. Good imagination fuel.

    Also...

"I am really going to have to buy it when you're done."

Eh-heh... Uh, yeah... Buy... because, surely... at some point that'll...

    ...probably...

    ...eventually...

    ...

    ...

    ...........be possible...

    o__________o''

(I'm gonna be real here, you'll probably just get to read my manuscript. Do you know how hard it is to get published? I mean, there's self-publishing, but that takes A LOT of work and commitment. This whole 'wanting to be a professional' thing scares the crap out of me.)

EDIT: Also, interesting comment on Sanderson! I personally love his books, but mostly for their plots and ideas. His prose is functional, but not stellar. I want to differentiate my work in that regard, if I can.

Hey, I'd buy it even if it didn't get published! Somehow. It's entirely possible! x)

That my friend is one of the many reasons I decided there is no way I would be able to survive as a professional writer. I love writing but ultimately it would destroy me. I don't have the will, the pace, the patience, the ideas or the passion. You do, therefore you can do it. Eventually. That's where the will, passion and patience come into place.

If the image is indeed indicative of your ideas, than thank goodness you give dragons arms! Let's them be a lot more versatile.

Nice update on Kindred, Okan, glad you're writing up a storm.
