Agreed. I could see if it were written in Dragon, but Daedric???

How unlikely is it really, though?(Okay, pretty unlikely, but hear me out). We know that Mora is guardian to the means to control dragons IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGE(sorry for the caps, I'm on mobile). And he's known this for millennia. He even keeps pet dragons around for his minion to snack on.

To expand on that: This daedric prince has what amounts to complete control over the creatures that the ancient Nords worshiped as gods, and during the DLC expresses a particular interest in the knowledge of a highly traditional nordic settlement.

I'd like to join in in earnest, but I'm hopping between internet spots and will be for the next few days.

Quick note, because I favor the simpler answers to grand conspiracies on Jurgen's tomb. The fundamental moment that changed his entire life was the First Battle at Red Mountain where the Nords and their Tongues were decimated by the Chimer. Chimer/Dunmer use the daedric alphabet for their writing, and I suspect it was used as a reminder of Jurgen's past.

I love the Herma Mora theory though, I just think there's a simpler answer.

It'll all still be here (hopefully) when you get the time, Tom. I do quite like that idea as a possible explanation of the daedric script.

I wonder how did the ancient Nords see the daedra before the introduction of the nine divines?

Quoting UESP (I think it's true, it's a simple matter of translation after all) the Daedric script on the pedestal reads "Windcaller".

Has anyone thought that the tomb is not Jurgen's resting place? That it's a special testing ground for the Dragonborn. Perhaps Daedric script is used to bind the dragon soul to the pedestal and was placed there by Windcaller himself.

I was actually going to suggest the exact same thing Vaz! Although I do think it's his tomb. Daedric script has the ability to bind scroll with spells, why not a dragon soul to his tomb? In fact, the only difference from Jurgen's tomb (or altar) and other tombs IS the dragon soul. Perhaps it's bound there by the Daedric script, waiting for the next "soulcaller" aka Dragonborn. It's on the same train of thought that Ustengrav is a test for the Dragonborn. Delphine certainly didn't absorb the dragon soul from that tomby altar thing.

It's a good thought. Arngeir calls Ustengrav "the final resting place of our founder, jurgen Windcaller" unless I am mistaken.

The daedric runes as a means of binding the soul is compelling, though. However, when there are shouts such as Soul Tear, Call of Valour and Dragon Aspect which deal directly with souls, why wouldn't the dragon language be sufficient?

We're talking about a dragon soul though. And those shouts you mentioned can't bind a soul for a long time. Dragon Aspect lasts longest but it can only be used once a day and expires fairly quickly. To bind a dragon soul for a long time something more powerful is needed
