Glaenriel (‘Daughter of the Glowing Stars’) Greenleaf was born in 4E72 in Elden Root, a city in eastern-central Valenwood, to Lord Glaronir Greenleaf and Lady Sinilwen Whiteblossom. Glaenriel was born with a lighter skin, which can happen, given that Bosmer originated from Altmer. Her father jokingly blamed her pale skin on the Altmer ancestors of her mother. Glaenriel was brought up as a single child in a strict conservative family that worshiped the forest god Y’ffre and followed the ‘Green Pact’. Both her parents were devout supporters of the Aldmeri Dominion and had high-payed and high-valued jobs at the Valenwood government. Despite the high Altmeri military presence, Glaenriel’s childhood was quite calm.
From a young age on, Glaenriel was trained, like every young Bosmer child, to use the bow, the preferred weapon of Valenwood’s inhabitants. She showed an extraordinary talent for it and was several times honored as best archer of her age group. Apart from early archery training, Glaenriel visited the regular school where she was educated in reading, writing, calculating and in more traditional subjects such as alchemy, in which she was very interested in and showed great effort as well.

In 4E172, Glaenriel joined the Jaqspur, the long-range archer division of the Bosmer hunting parties, which she was very proud of. Jaqspur are well-known masters of stealth and their ability to blend into the forest and turn almost invisible makes them ideal scouts and guardians of the woods. During her career, Glaenriel was granted the title Captain of the Jaqspur and was ready to lead her own troop of archers.

For a short time, in 4E175, Glaenriel fought in the Great War as part of a Bosmeri scout troop for the Aldmeri Dominion. However, she was expelled after she refused to fulfill the Meat Mandate and consume a slain enemy. After that incident her faith in both the Aldmeri Dominion and the Bosmeri religion started to crumble as she witnessed the horrors of war and fanatic religious rites first-hand.

Some years later, in 4E191, Glaenriel retired as Jaqspur to pursue her work as an alchemist. Secretly she experimented on discovering the different effects of botanical ingredients especially in crafting deadly poisons. In 4E192, Glaenriel joined a small group of Bosmer rebels that fought for an independent Valenwood and she vividly agreed with their views. Although this rebellion wasn’t important for the history books yet it had an impact on Glaenriel’s life and future. Despite being not an active fighter, her strategical mind and alchemical skills were indispensable in the guerilla war fought against the Dominion. Yet as fate wanted it, the operation was uncovered by Altmer spies and Glaenriel and her allies were arrested. This was the moment when everything changed.

While she was locked up, her mother became very sick, to a point where she was incurable and menaced by death. Her father used his influence to free Glaenriel so that she might see her mother one last time. But Glaenriel was determined to save her instead and gathered plants which she discovered to have healing abilities. As her father realized that Glaenriel broke the Green Pact, which was the most sacred to him, he hit his daughter in the face, leaving a large wound on her left cheek and forbid her to set any foot near her mother. Under tears and anger she spoke her last words to her father: ‘If mother dies, because of your religious fanaticism, you will lose your daughter, too.’ In reaction to this, her father exiled her from Elden Root and ordered the guards to kill her if she was ever to set foot again on this land. As consequence of her past activities in the rebellion, the Aldmeri Dominion officially announced Glaenriel as ‘enemy of the Dominion’. She left her homeland and fled to Rihad, a port city in southern Hammerfell, where she found refuge and a safe place to continue her studies.

For several years Glaenriel traveled through Tamriel, visiting cities in Hammerfell and Cyrodiil and continued her studies in alchemy, focusing on the poisonous effects of plants. The tragic death of her mother and the severe departure from her homeland left her scarred, both physically and emotionally. Glaenriel abandoned the Green Pact and her faith in Y’ffre completely and swore herself to never use the healing effects of botanical ingredients again. Instead, she started practicing Restoration magic, because she believed that this ability is strengthened by showing love and compassion for other people.

Long red hair hangs down over her shoulders and a silver circlet, crafted back in Valenwood by an Altmer goldsmith, keeps it from dangling in her face. Emerald-green shimmering eyes, carefully observing the distance, could steal anybody’s gaze in a second. Her left cheek has a straight scar, it’s barely noticeable, but it reminds her of her father and her past. Her light skin doesn’t immediately reveal her ethnicity but her pointy ears, gently peeking through her hair, make her stand out as a mer. Glaenriel is about average body size for a Bosmer, standing at about 160 cm and weighing only 56 kg. She’s quite athletic and agile on her feet, due to her slim frame. Elegantly and feather-light, she is able to run over the thinnest of branches outrunning any threat behind her. Most people that have met Glaenriel find her quite charming and speaking to her reveals that she has indeed a calm and friendly spirit. Despite her good intentions, Glaenriel is sometimes too eager to prove herself to anybody that might doubt her and sometimes gets herself into danger. But luckily she is clever enough to manage any situation she might have gotten herself into.

Since she left Valenwood she has changed her personal pantheon of the gods she worships. She stopped honoring Y’ffre and focused on Auri-El, the king of Gods, Mara the Goddess of Love, Arkay the Bod of Birth and Death and Stendarr the God of Mercy and Justice. She has incorporated their characteristics into her own way of life and she strives to be as loving as Mara, not consume fallen enemies but grant proper burial rites in the honor of Arkay and be as merciful and just as Stendarr.

'Glaenriel adores the calm and vitalizing atmosphere in the temples, be it the temples of her gods or foreign gods.'

Glaenriel is wearing a fine-woven green dress and a brown leather corset on top. Her upper arms are kept free to allow her to move her bow effortlessly. Brown leather gloves protect her hands and give her a tight grip to fire arrows or climb trees. Her legs are covered by woven stockings to protect against mosquito bites and other annoying insects. Her boots are made of leather as well and while the lower part is reinforced, the upper part around the ankle is kept thin and flexible.
While she lived in Hammerfell, Glaenriel learned a thing or two about close-ranged combat with swords, though she prefers daggers for their light weight and speed. At that time she came in the possession of twin elemental daggers, Narnagol, the Fire Tooth, and Faenagol, the Ice Tooth, though she doesn’t know much about their origin. Both have slightly curved blades and smooth wooden handles. They feel well balanced and comfortable to wield. Their enchantments, fire and frost damage respectively, are useful against a wide array of foes.
Back in Taneth, Glaenriel met a Bosmer, who like her, abandoned the Green Pact and became a blacksmith. She ordered him to craft her a larger version of her daggers, which he accomplished beautifully. The sword is enchanted with fire damage and a fear spell and received the name ‘Trollcleaver’, for obvious reasons.
Glaenriel’s bow, Whisperwind, is made of a strong, dark wood, reinforced with ebony plates. It’s enchanted with both frost and shock damage and a deadly weapon against fast enemies and mages alike.

During her research in Valenwood, Glaenriel got her hands on a book called ‘Herbalist’s Guide to Skyrim’ that described a handful of Skyrim-native plants and their usefulness for alchemists. In this guide, two flowers caught her attention, Deathbell and Nightshade, which are infamous for their use in concentrated poisons. To change her research from simple theory to more practical experiments, Glaenriel went as far as importing specimen of these plants from Khajiit merchants. She discovered various effects of these plants and became the first person in Valenwood to cultivate them. Her secret to grow these plants in a warm climate such as Valenwood, was a complex combination of frost spells and soul gems, to provide a frost cloak around the cultivating box. She soon became famous for mixing strong poisons which no other alchemist in Valenwood was able to match. She kept the ingredients, which broke the Green Pact, strictly secret.

'Handwritten notes by Glaenriel during her research'

In 4E201 Glaenriel arrived at the north-eastern border between Hammerfell and Skyrim. After almost ten years in the warm climates of Hammerfell and southern Cyrodiil, Glaenriel was ready to continue her journey to Skyrim, to discover new people, new plants and start a new adventure.
Only a few days after she entered Skyrim, Glaenriel got caught between Imperials and Nord rebels. In fact she got surprised and didn’t have time to take cover, as she walked on the road and not, as usual for her, through the forest. The Imperials assumed she was a spy and transported her with the Stormcloak prisoners to Helgen where she was to be executed. Although the gods had other plans, a dragon appeared and left the village in desolation.
Glaenriel narrowly escaped the terror of Helgen but was left without armor, weapons or food. She followed the road to the nearest village, Rivenwood, and she couldn’t believe her eyes when the first person she met was one from her homeland, a Bosmer named Faendal. Glaenriel couldn’t explain it but something about Faendal seemed familiar, as if they had met years before. They had a lot of stories from Valenwood to share and both were happy that they met each other. Glaenriel found out that Faendal is no longer a follower of Y’ffre and works at the Riverwood Mill. At last Faendal gave her a hint on how a Bosmer could make some easy coin in Skyrim ‘from personal experience’, he assured. At first Glaenriel declined the offer of joining up the Thieves Guild and continued her journey through Skyrim to study the different plants but soon enough she would reconsider to travel to Riften and find this mysterious person named Brynjolf. Or, he would find her.
Only time will tell what the dragon appearance will mean and how Glaenriel will fit into these events.

My only problem with her is that she didn't "restrain" her father when he hit her and continue to treat her mother. In a way, that death is on her too, sadly. Other than that, it was quite the enjoyable read. I like all the small details you've added to the backstory. I'm curious to know where the next adventure take her.

    An excellent read.

When she met Feandal, you say '...Faendal seemed familiar, as if they had met years before.'

Had they met before? Or did he seem familiar to her beacuse he was a Bosmer too?

Thanks, Noodles! Yes, that's true as well. In a way, she was so shocked about getting hit by her father, with whom she had a good relationship all her life. I planned to continue her adventure in her character build but I just can't finish the writing process haha

Thank you as well. Well, that's the big mystery, right? :P
