    Complete Guide to Shouts

Ponty here with another in-depth guide for you here on the Skyrim Blog. This time I explored the inner workings of all the Dragon Shouts usable by the player in Skyrim, including those from the Dawnguard and Dragonborn DLCs. I performed my research in-game using the developer console as well as using the Creation Kit – some of the results might surprise you! Numbers separated by slashes indicate the values for each level of a Shout.

    Animal Allegiance

First off is Animal Allegiance. This Shout calls animals of any level within 75/150/250 feet to your aid for 30/45/60 seconds. It works on any creature with the ActorTypeAnimal tag, including:

    • Passive creatures like foxes, elk, deer, hares, chickens, goats and cows – even the white stag from Hircine’s quest
    • Dogs and wolves, including Barbas, the wolf spirit from the final Companions quest, and the ghostly wolves in Labyrinthian
    • Horses, of both the normal and cart variety
    • Weaker aggressive creatures like skeevers, mudcrabs, horkers and slaughterfish
    • Frostbite spiders and Chaurus of all varieties (including Hunters)
    • Trolls
    • Bears and Sabre Cats
    • Mammoths
    • Netches, Ash Hoppers and Spiders from Solstheim

Interestingly, when the effect ends, if creatures normally friendly to each other (two trolls for example) attack each other while one is under the effect of Animal Allegiance, the other creature will continue attacking them, even after the effect ends. The Shout has a cooldown of 50/60/70 seconds.

    Aura Whisper

Aura Whisper is a quiet (though not completely silent) Shout that reveals all creatures (including automatons and Daedra, not normally detectable by Alteration spells) for 10/20/30 seconds. It has a radius of 300 feet indoors, and 500 feet outdoors. It has a cooldown of 30/40/50 seconds. The Dragon Aspect Shout increases the duration by 50%.

    Become Ethereal

Become Ethereal is a defensive Shout that makes the user immune to damage for the 8/13/18 second duration, or until they strike a target or interact with an object. All the same interactions that would break Invisibility (talking, opening doors, grabbing items) break Ethereal. Attacks only break Ethereal if the blow connects, and power attacks made while in Ethereal form use no Stamina. Sprinting while Ethereal doesn’t use any Stamina, but does prevent it from regenerating. Become Ethereal has a cooldown of 20/30/40 seconds. Dragon Aspect increases the duration by 50%.

    Call Dragon

Call Dragon summons the dragon Odahviing to your side, but only if you have completed the main quest. The first two words of the Shout have no effect, but with the third word, Odahviing will appear nearby after a short delay to lend aid. He can be summoned in any outdoor area from the vanilla game, but not in DLC zones like the Forgotten Vale and Solstheim. Immediately waiting for 2 hours after using the Shout will reset your cooldown timer, and Odahviing will still appear. He can be tamed with Bend Will, allowing you to ride him. He circles around you for about 2 minutes before returning to the Throat of the World, though he will stick around for longer during a fight. The first 2 words have a cooldown of 5 seconds, with the full Shout having a 300 second (5 minute) cooldown. Odahviing is levelled, and has the same stats as a fire-breathing dragon of the same tier as the player (at level 45 he would have the stats of an Elder Dragon for example).

    Call of Valor

Call of Valor is a useful Shout acquired by completing the Main Quest, allowing you to summon a hero at long range (unaffected by the Summoner perk) from Sovngarde for 60 seconds. Each word has a cooldown of 180 seconds, and summons a different hero. They count towards your cap of summoned creatures, but you can only have 1 hero summoned by this spell at a time. All of the heroes have 388 Health and 147 Stamina, and count as Protected, meaning they will crawl around and get back up when on low health in combat. The first word summons Gormlaith. She has a sword and shield, dealing about 21 damage per strike, as well as a long bow and arrows, dealing about 34 damage. Her armor rating is 150, and she knows the Unrelenting Force and Dismay Shouts. The second word summons Felldir, wielding a greatsword that deals about 33 damage. He isn’t wearing any armor, but knows the Unrelenting Force Shout, and the Dragon version of Frost Breath. This version deals 65 damage and has a very short cooldown. Finally, the last word summons Hakon, wielding a battleaxe which deals 35 damage. He has an armor rating of 105 and knows the Unrelenting Force and Disarm Shouts. Using Dragon Aspect increases the duration of Call of Valor by 50%.

    Clear Skies

Clear Skies clears away bad weather and clouds. From my testing, they all appear to have the same effect when used to clear away weather, but against the fog that needs to be cleared at some points in the Main Quest, using more words keeps the fog at bay for longer. It also has a powerful 3 second stagger, and can be used to dispel Alduin’s meteor storm. None of the components of Clear Skies work indoors, and it has a cooldown of 5/10/15 seconds.

    Disarm

Disarm forces an enemy of level 12/20/30 to drop their main hand weapon, and staggers them for 3 seconds. It has no effect on higher level targets however. It has a very short range, but can affect multiple targets in the area. Dragon Aspect however, increases the magnitude by 25%, allowing it to affect up to level 37 targets. It has a cooldown of 30/35/40 seconds.

    Dismay

Dismay forces enemies of level 7/15/24 to flee for 30 seconds. It has a range of 36/50/75 feet, and staggers targets even if they are unaffected. The Shout doesn’t work on Daedra, automatons or undead. Dragon Aspect increases the level affected by 25%, so it can affect up to level 30 opponents. It has a cooldown of 40/45/50 seconds.

    Dragonrend

Dragonrend weakens a dragon, forcing it to land and grounding it for 15/18/22 seconds. It also staggers the dragon. It has a larger collision radius than many other Shouts, making it easier to hit flying dragons. The magic resistance (or more likely, weakness) of the target modifies the duration of the Shout. Dragonrend has a cooldown of 10/12/15 seconds.

    Elemental Fury

Elemental Fury increases your attack speed with unenchanted melee weapons in either hand by 30%/50%/70% for 15 seconds. It also causes your weapon to deal 10 additional damage per strike, subject to magic resistance. Dragon Aspect increases the magnitude of this Shout by 25%. It has a cooldown of 30/40/50 seconds.

    Fire Breath

Fire Breath is a damaging Shout, dealing 50/70/90 Fire damage to the targets. This can be boosted by Ahzidal and Augmented Flames, and is subject to magic and fire resistance. It also provides a 1/2/3 second stagger. Dragon Aspect increases the damage dealt by 25%. It has a 30/50/100 second cooldown.

    Frost Breath

Frost Breath is similar to its fiery counterpart, but deals its 50/70/90 Frost damage over 5 seconds, as well as slowing the targets. The damage is boosted by Dukaan and Augmented Frost, and is subject to frost and magic resistance. Magic resistance (or weakness) also affects the duration of the freeze effect from the Dragonborn Frost boost. Like Fire Breath, it also inflicts a 1/2/3 second stagger, and Dragon Aspect increases the damage by 25%. It also has a 30/50/100 second cooldown.

    Ice Form

Ice Form is an oft-underrated Shout with serious potential. It freezes the targets and deals 2 Frost damage per second for 15/30/60 seconds. Dukaan, Augmented Frost, Fortify Destruction potions, Weakness to Frost and Weakness to Magic all improve on the damage of this Shout, and Weakness to Magic even increases the duration. Damaging a frozen target immediately ends the effect, though pre-existing damage over time effects won’t break the ice. Targets that are immune to paralysis (Mammoths and Atronachs for example) still take the damage over time, and in this case it isn’t stopped if you attack them again. Dragon Aspect increases the duration by 50%. The Shout has a 60/90/120 second cooldown.

    Kyne's Peace

Kyne’s Peace calms animals of up to level 20 within 75/150/225 feet for 60/120/180 seconds, and also reveals them with a detect life glow. It works on all the same creatures Animal Allegiance does. It has a 40/50/60 second cooldown.

    Marked for Death

Marked for Death is a seriously powerful Shout, dealing 60/120/180 damage and dropping the targets’ armor by 1500/3000/4500 over 60 seconds. It can even drop armor ratings into negative values, resulting in greatly increased damage from physical attacks. It can stack with itself, and both the magic and armor damage are affected by magic resistance (or weakness). Dragon Aspect increases the magnitude of this Shout by 25%. It has a cooldown of 20/30/40 seconds.

    Slow Time

Slow Time is another fan favorite, slowing time to 30%/20%/10% of its normal rate for 8/12/16 seconds. You, however, are not affected as much as the rest of the world. Fortify Alteration potions, the Stability perk, and Dragon Aspect increase the duration - 50% in the case of Dragon Aspect and Stability. It has a cooldown of 30/45/60 seconds.

    Storm Call

Storm Call is an extremely powerful Shout, summoning a storm for 60/120/180 seconds. It strikes targets within 100/100/150 feet for 40/90/120 Shock damage every 3-6 seconds. I know this is different from the UESP numbers, but I was consistently getting that damage without anything buffing me up. The damage is increased by Zahkriisos and the Augmented Shock perks, and is subject to magic and shock resistance. This Shout only works outside. It has a rather long cooldown at 300/480/600 seconds.

    Throw Voice

Throw Voice is a nice and simple Shout that creates a sound which distracts enemies (assuming you haven’t been detected). It is completely silent to use. Using more words of the Shout decreases the cooldown - it’s 30/15/5 seconds.

    Unrelenting Force

The famous Unrelenting Force Shout knocks foes back and does 2/5/10 magic damage. The first word does a 2 second stagger, the second a 3 second stagger, and the final word throws targets off their feet. The damage (and damage boost from Dragonborn Force) is subject to magic resistance. It has a 15/20/45 second cooldown.

    Whirlwind Sprint

Whirlwind Sprint blasts you forward 50/75/100 feet horizontally. If you have a shield and spell equipped, blocking immediately after saying the last word causes you to move roughly double the distance. It also uses 12/14/11 Stamina (slightly more if you use the aforementioned trick), but still works if your stamina pool is empty. It has a 20/25/35 second cooldown

    Drain Vitality (Dawnguard)

Drain Vitality is a rather unremarkable Shout, draining 150 points of Stamina/Magicka/Health over 30 seconds. Its one redeeming quality is that this drain is unaffected by the magic resistance of the target. It has a rather long cooldown, at 30/60/90 seconds.

    Soul Tear (Dawnguard)

Soul Tear is a powerful Shout, dealing a whopping 300 damage and soul trapping a single target for 2 seconds with all 3 Words of Power. If the target is slain by the damage effect, they are revived as a zombie for 1 minute. It works on targets up to level 99. This zombie counts towards your summon limit and is affected by necromancy perks. They disintegrate upon their death or at the end of the duration. This damage is unaffected by magic resistance, making it deadly on almost anyone. The duration of the Soul Trap effect can be extended via a Fortify Conjuration potion. The Shout has greatly diminished, but still useful, power with the first two words, staggering targets for 1/2 seconds at short range. It has a 5/5/90 second cooldown.

    Summon Durnehviir (Dawnguard)

Summon Durnehviir summons the dragon of the same name to aid you in combat. He counts towards you summon cap, is immune to Bend Will, and you can only have one of him at a time. You summon him similarly to a normal Conjuration spell, by targeting an area on the ground. The Shout can be used in any area, though if used indoors the Shout may fail. In tight spaces he won’t take off, but outdoors he will circle you for the 3 minute duration and assist you in combat. He knows Frost Breath, dealing 65 damage, the Dragon version of Drain Vitality, dealing 10 damage per second, and a unique Shout and calls one of each of the Soul Cairn summons. His melee attacks deal 25 damage, but all of them except the wing attacks have a 50% damage multiplier. He counts as level 20 and has 1821 Health. Like Call Dragon, the first two words of the Shout do nothing. It has a 5/5/300 second cooldown.

    Battle Fury (Dragonborn)

Battle Fury increases the attack speed of nearby allies’ unenchanted melee weapons by 30%/50%/70% for 16 seconds (contrary to UESP’s description). It has a 20/30/40 second cooldown.

    Bend Will (Dragonborn)

Bend Will shoots a fast-moving blast of energy to bend the earth, mind and dragon to your will. Each word includes the effect of the previous words as well. The first word is used as part of the Dragonborn main quest, and can also be used to inflict a 2 second stagger on opponents. The second word dominates everyone in the area for 30 seconds - this doesn’t work on undead, automatons and Daedra however. The third word tames a dragon and forces it to land, allowing you to ride it. It also makes it your ally until you leave the area. The projectile for the third word moves twice as quickly as when the other words are used on their own. It should be noted that Shout has a very long range, and the area effect of all words increases greatly over distance. The cooldown of this Shout is 10/90/120 seconds.

    Cyclone (Dragonborn)

Cyclone launches a medium range area effect cyclone which deals 50/75/100 damage in a wide area, and throws targets into the air. The damage can be increased via a Fortify Destruction potion, and is subject to magic resistance, but not frost resistance. Each word increases the range and radius of the cyclone by about 25%. It has a 30/45/60 second cooldown.

    Dragon Aspect (Dragonborn)

Last but definitely not least is Dragon Aspect, a 1/day power that provides a variety of buffs. The first word boosts your armor by 25 points, and increases your damage with power attacks by 25%. The second word increases your armor by a further 50 points, grants 25% resistance for fire and frost, and summons an Ancient Dragonborn for about 18 seconds when you drop below half health. The Ancient Dragonborn is immune to damage, and has an aggro cloak which forces enemies to attack him. He wields a battleaxe which deals 39 damage per hit, and knows the Unrelenting Force, Fire Breath and Frost Breath Shouts. With the third word, you get an additional +25 armor for a total of 100, 20% reduces Shout cooldowns, and a boost to many Shouts from the base game (see Shout descriptions). The effects remain active even if you change into your Vampire Lord or Werewolf forms!

Thanks for reading, and I hope you learned something from this! If you pick up any mistakes or have something to add, feel free to drop it in a comment below!

Clear skies will interrupt any dragon breath attack; I love that shout. Throw Voice can also interrupt dragon breath attack but has no stagger.

I wonder if the thu'um battle between the dragonborn and a dragon would go something like this:

    Dragon: Fire, Breath,

    DB: Monkey butt

    Dragon: Do not insult me...

    Dragon: Fire Breat...

DB: Snow's starting to clear up

    Dragon: Wait, what?

    etc.

The entire shout doesn't work. I slightly changed the wording to indicate that. Same with Dragonrend - it was based on the magic resistance/weakness of the target, not the player (I thought that would be obvious).

Thing about Drain Vitality is it has a 90 second cooldown for the version that damages health. Soul Tear does twice as much damage with the same cooldown and is instantaneous!

Does anyone know if Become Ethereal allows the player to run while overencumbered?

I doubt it, put I'll put it down as a thing to test along with the Throw Voice thing Rune suggested.

    It does not.

You have to time it at the beginning of their shout.

I was also wondering about Elemental Fury; on UESP they mention that the shout adds damage. I know they have been wrong before but in my experience it did increase damage. Then again, I'm on console so ya never know. Anyone care to clarify this?

I'll check that out when I get home
