Art Symposium: Shadow Magic

    Hey art lovers!

In my journey to present a character throughout all groups here at TheSkyrimBlog, I wanted to change up my order a bit and have a bit of fun where my strengths are at their weakest: art. I always use art when trying to come up a character. It is usually #1 on my list for getting new ideas and to be inspired for something creative.

I want to propose a new trend here in the Art Group, something I hope will take hold among members and the hosts to maybe try for awhile. I see multiple requests for specific screenshots, works of art, and other image related things. With these Symposiums, I thought it would be a cool idea to hold as frequent as Weekly Art Symposiums. With these member generated art galleries, the Art Group could then utilize some of the newer tag systems to have a large directory of key words, terms, and other titles for members to quickly find artwork styles they are looking for! I think for my purposes, I will be showcasing some great submissions for later works in my set piece ... since I can't draw/paint/photoshop worth a damn! I would rather shine the light on you guys and gals.

The idea behind how these could work is simple. The discussion creator could post a general idea under the title "Art: " followed by their specific key term. This offers members and lovers of art to produce, contribute, and share art from various sources (cited of course if taken from elsweyr) to have freedom to interpret the proposed "key word" that the discussion presents. If you would like to give it a try, I would love to see anyone's work/interpretation on the following concept:

    Shadow Magic

"So this is something I just did myself! on a touch screen. It's actually a character I plan to create, I was inspired by the Poltergeist movie and thought it would be fun to play a warlock type character, something that is consumed by shadow magic. In this piece he is commanding his army of the dead, visible up front and many more marching behind."

    D13PLZ

"I found this image of a Drow Shadowsmith in the Tome of Magic sourcebook for D&D 3.5. I thought it was particularly relevant to your mention of binding shadows to weapons in the Lore post!

    Ponty

"Hm, okay, I'll bite.  To the right is a piece from a series I did depicting the concept of the Hanged Man in tarot.  However, I felt the imagery and concept applied itself well to the theme.  Accessing the Shadow Realm in addition to the multiple possibilities of yourself is no mean feat.  In order to reach your other selves, you must give up your current self.  You must surrender the idea of a singular, present identity in order to possess all identities.  The danger in this is that the caster risks losing all sense of self--the self is sacrificed to the caster's self in order to attain this power.  In short, "I make a sacrifice of myself to myself in order to gain knowledge and power."

Additionally, if the caster is not careful, I'm fairly certain that they could easily lose control of their multiple potential selves such that one would come to dominate and the potential selves would thus be lost, as they no longer have the potential to exist.  It's a very precarious line to walk, and requires utmost concentration and self-awareness...

But still, the door is there.  You need only look within yourself to find it."

    Kyrielle, the Lore Mistress

"My idea was that this is a Breton who tried to use the infamous Shadow Magic, but the power overwhelmed him..."

    Nixrune

"OK, I'll kick off the Symposium with this wonderful artwork by Kerem Beyt from Turkey. This character showcased here can be viewed as Dunmer vampire who manipulates her own shadows like Azra Nightwielder."

    Vazgen

For various entries into this symposium, I want to propose that contributors only use these methods:

    • Screenshots - Any and all technologically gifted members (and google searchers) can and should present their own or someone else's in game screenshots from Skyrim following the theme of the symposium
    • Artwork - Hand drawn, photoshopped, magic shopped, technicolor: it doesn't matter. This will be member generated works of art that come from you, the site member, and you alone. No taking from other artists, as they will be checked for plagiarism!
    • Cited Works - Google! Galleries! Cite and credit artists from around the net and globe to show your love for art created by others. Use the given symposium concept to find representations to display your artistic eye through another artist.

Please feel free to submit at any time, but please only submit one (1) entry for each symposium. Post the image in the comments, citing the artist when necessary, and explain why you created/chose the work of art for the symposium. It will make comments and sharing more fun and also will offer a higher quality of submissions due to the fact that you have to use your keen eye to pick the perfect (or draw the perfect) submission. They can be anything! Abstract, simplistic, screenshots of gameplay ... whatever you feel represents the theme best!

When someone puts forth their work or work of another, please feel free to comment positively on their efforts and show support for renowned or budding artists. Through feedback given on submissions below, a general "winner" will be selected and placed at the top of the gallery in this discussion. For later use, art members could then possibly search for key words themselves to find artwork that would fit a build, a story, or even something for themselves!

Have fun! Again, the theme for this symposium is Shadow Magic.

First selection for theme winner (thread can be added to) will be a week from now - July 29, 2013

    Character: The Ceya-Tar

So, each member has a limit of one entry that can be screenshot or another artwork from the internet or made by himself. He posts it here in the comments (linking the artist where applicable)? That's how it works, correct?

Henson's way of saying "Find me build art!" :P But I'll see what I can find.

This is fantastic! This really does represent the "multiple version" capabilities of shadow magic. Really great choice, Vazgen.

This is awesome! Love the scale of the pic, really gives off a deathly tone. Great pic! I think it would be a great idea for a build. I am currently finishing up mine, it is a ton of fun!
