How to Create Story Chapter Picture Links

A fair few of us use links and pictures to help readers navigate through our stories but it isn’t something we tend to share with the newer members. I think this is a shame as it not only helps with navigation but it also allows us to add character in the blog layout by adding pictures to help with the theme of our stories and it provides us with a means to give the blog that ‘extra touch’ to make it stand out.

What this will do I hope is to aid members in setting out pictures to use as blog links. As always, I’m going to be using my own work.

Now, the first things we need to decide upon is how many links we want and where we want them to go. Everyone is free to experiment but the layout I use and the one we often see is the ‘Pyramid’ layout.

This comprises of three pictures or links which are situated at the bottom of each chapter.

At the top, we have the ‘ToC’ link. This will enable readers to effortlessly navigate to the Table of contents page.
    Here’s mine…

What immediately becomes apparent is the fact that it adds to the theme of my story. Sometimes members use pictures or banners other times they have fancy font titles instead. It’s entirely up to the author. What I do suggest is that you make sure that whichever you decide to use, you make sure the link type is clearly visible.

Next, we have two vitally important links. The ‘Previous’ and the ‘Next’ Links. It is these which the reader will use to navigate throughout your story chapters.

These are the ones I currently use.

Now, the first thing we need to do is add the pictures. All we need to do is use the 'Upload' symbol in the edit tool section. First add your 'ToC' picture then on a NEW LINE add your 'Previous' and 'Next' pictures.

We then need to set them out. With the ToC Link, I set it in the centre of the line. This then becomes the ‘top’ of the pyramid. As to the size of this link, it is dependant upon what sort of picture you use and what you want to achieve. personally I use '165' Constrain proportions.

The ‘Previous’ link I set out to be on the left and the ‘Next’ tab I sets out to be on the right. Another thing we have to do is make sure they are of a decent size. Too large and they ‘knock off’ the other picture. Too small and the reader can’t see what the links are. Again it is dependant upon what you want to achieve and what pictures you use. I prefer the '140' Constrain Proportions.

What we should now see is something which looks like this:

So now we have the pictures in place but at the moment that is all they are; pictures.

The next stage is relativly simple but it becomes far simpler if you open two Tamriel Vault pages. The first page is the one with the blog you are working on. The second one is on the blog (or page ect) of where you want the link to goto. For instance, if you are setting out the ToC link, then you wil have the second window opened on your ToC.

Now that you have your second page open on your ToC, you need to copy the adress from the address bar (The URL) at the top of the screen. Once you have copied it, goto the blog which you are currently editing. (The one where you are adding Links to).

In the editor window, in the tools section you will see a a symbol of a chain. This is the 'Link Tool'.

What you need to do is click on the picture or Font which you want to use as your link then click on the 'Link Symbol'. This wil then open a window.

All you need to do is paste the adress URL in the top URL section then click on 'Ok'.

Note: Do not paste or type in the second section. 'Text To Display'. This will overwrite the picture.

Fact: Every time a picture is over written a werewolf dies........

    DON'T DO IT.....

On your second Tamriel Page, navigate to the blog which you want your 'Previous' tab to goto. Again copy the URL. On the Blog you are editing, post the URL as you did before; click on the picture you are using as a 'previous Link', then click on the 'Link Symbol' in the editor tools section. Add the URL in the URL section then click on 'Ok'.

Do the same with the 'Next Link'.

On your second Tamriel Page, navigate to the blog which you want your 'Next' tab to goto. Again copy the URL. On the Blog you are editing, post the URL as you did before; click on the picture you are using as a 'Next Link', then click on the 'Link Symbol' in the editor tools section. Add the URL in the URL section then click on 'Ok'.

That is all there is to it. As you add chapters to your story remember to update the link on the previous chapter and add the link from the new chapter to your ToC.

I hope this is of use to you all. Feel free to comment and ask questions.

This is very well explained. After reading it once I immediately understood how to use this. I'm gonna start adding this to my chapters.

    Thanks Valierus.

I've had a look at your chapter's and I have to say you've chosen some wonderful pictures. I'm glad this was of some help.

Thanks Sotek. After seeing yours I tried to find something meaningful I could use for my pictures, since yours quite obviously related to the story. I'd like to think I've done so quite well.
