Discussion: Improving CB

  • April 24, 2018

    So, this is a pretty complex topic with lots of different possibilities to explore and at least a few hundred different conversation paths. As Host of CB, one of the key goals I have is to make the group more enjoyable for people, but also just generally making it more accessible, improving content production, commenting on stuff and a whole bunch of other dot points that I try to fill out. So there's a lot that I try to do, but it's always difficult to know if anything/everything I'm doing is having an effect on whether or not people enjoy the group more or spend more time here or anything.

    What I'd like to do is just open a discussion talking about what could improve in CB, new features or content types that people would like to see, new ideas for Events...anything really to discuss ways to make the group more enjoyable for you. Oh and of course analysing some things we do here that you don't enjoy as much, hard to have a constructive conversation without looking at the negatives. That's really it, I'll just throw a few questions down and leave it at that.

    What do you think would improve Skyrim CB.

    Is there anything that you currently enjoy or dislike about the group.

    Is there something new you'd like to see.

    Other questions....

    OK, I'm going to be brutally honest because I love this place and I want it to be the best it can be.  I want you (all) to know that these are my opinions and observations and I do not (and can not) speak for the Skyrim community as a whole, we each have our tastes and that's what makes this place great.  Now, with the politically correct-ness speech out of the way....

    1). Searching for builds sucks.  I know that most of this is caused by the site's host and can't be changed, but I have MUCH better luch doing a search with Google than I do by using the search bar above.  The Character Build Archive, while a valiant effort, leaves me wanting.  I would MUCH prefer to see the results for a "mage" category show me the most popular builds than the one that had the newest reply.  I know it's the host's capabilities and I can't think of a better way, but it's very frustrating to find a build when I don't know the name of it already.

    2). At least some of the builds stored here depend on "glitches" and, to me, a glitch does not make a build.  I know this site began as mostly a console-centric site and that alone forced limitations upon players.  Glitches were a way around those limitations, and some builds use these glitches in such a way that they actually blend into the character really well.  But as a PC player, I've always had access to the Unoffical Patch and most of the "glitches" used here aren't glitches in my game.  And even if they were, I don't think I'd depend on them to make my character work.

    3). Mods.  Now that we have an (almost) level playing field were mods are concerned, I'd love to see more builds that take advantage of mods like Ordinator, Apocolypse, Andromeda, etc.  I know we've started down this path and I've seen a few builds based on Ordinator, but I'd really like to see more.

    4). As a heavy role-player, I tend to look at builds as more of a means to an end.  I determine I want to play Type X Character and I come here looking at builds for ideas on how my character might act or what abilities he/she might have (perks, etc.).  I pay a great deal more attention to the backstory, the playstyle and the lore (if presented) around the build.  Then I begin to wrap a story around those ideas in my head.  The perk spreads, the "special powers", etc. are secondary for my choice of the build.  For example, I took pieces from Ponty's Palidin and Albino's Vigilant of Stendarr to create Bastian, the main character in my Vigilant playthrough (and story on this site).  They were simple, clean, straight forward builds and my result was very fun to play.

    5). Not that tooting your horn is the primary goal here DB, but I came across your build "Karliah, Barenziah's Legacy" a few nights ago.  I really wished more builds followed that format.  Breaking the perk spreads down more - not just "here's a goal for level 50, make sure you don't mess up".  Then you went into WHY you spent those perks the way you did.  Why the character at level 15 used these abilities and then by level 35 they used a different set.  All of those mattered more to the CHARACTER's evolution, than they did to progressing in the game.  I loved the tons of information on playstyle, the lore mixed in, the "why's" and "how's".  This one is a nearly perfect build in my mind.  (It helped that Karliah is a very intresting character in the first place too.)

    I know I want a lot, but I'm hoping that by the time that ES6 rolls around, this place with be an energized and stable place for all of us to come look for new ideas!  Thank you for all your hard work DB!

    edit: clarity, spelling and grammar.

    Probably more collaboration between builders. Maybe host a duos or teams Flash Event or something

    I dunno man. I hate to be the guy to say this but there probably isn’t much anything you can do to make this group as great as it used to be. It’s mostly because of how old the game is. A little to do with the site itself and just the changing of the culture surrounding the cb group. I was lurking back when folks like Mason ran the show and man what a time to be alive! Some of the greatest builds ever came out between 2013 and 2015 and nothing has topped them since. These builds were born out of an intense desire of the authors to be considered the best. Competition is what drove the group and it’s what we’re lacking now. Quality was enforced by the death matches and nobody seemed to mind then. Without these things there’s no insentive for people to produce the best Builds. I think the workshop is another detriment to the group. It’s premise sounds good on paper but all it ends up doing is taking activity away from the cb group. It also becomes a place for builders who clearly don’t need help to show off half finished work for that early pat on the back. That pushes discussions from guys who actually need help to the bottom where nobody sees them.

    Bloody hell, I'm way behind. Sorry Solias, Fallout Boy, Chris I've been having some internet problems today otherwise I would've messaged hours ago. So just to clarify the process of my response (because I'm not responding to everything). Generally, I think this is supposed to be a time for others to share their opinions, so all I'm going to do is respond to points that I think I can offer somewhat quick remedies to. That's just why it's going to be a little less than what I'd normally do for the first week.

    @Solias

    1). Searching for builds sucks.

    Yeah, it kind of does...but I think I might have a solution, at least for older builds. I need to chat with a few people first because it involves a Google Sheet that might link to emails and I just want to check to make sure that's not a problem, but there might be a...not perfect, but better solution than our current system that I could offer.

    2) Mods.  Now that we have an (almost) level playing field were mods are concerned, I'd love to see more builds that take advantage of mods like Ordinator, Apocolypse, Andromeda, etc.  I know we've started down this path and I've seen a few builds based on Ordinator, but I'd really like to see more.

    Just throwing out a link to the Ordinator tag. There are around 21 listed builds there as well as 28 odd builds under the Mods tag. There is a crossover, of course, but generally yeah I definitely agree, more modded content would be really nice to see

    Thanks for dropping by with the comments Solias, really appreciate it :D

    @Fallout Boy

    So...right. There are some parts of this that I do agree with, others that I don't. The only thing that I want to clarify is.

    Quality was enforced by the death matches and nobody seemed to mind then

    The deathmatches actually did suffer from a fair amount of pushback that built up since I've been a member (2013/2014), and before I continue, I will say that I used to be really fond of them, personally, I benefitted from them. So it's not a case of me arguing against them because I always hated them, just that I slowly noticed the effect they were having and thought they were negative impacts on the group.

    There's something to be said for competition, I definitely agree and I think you could make a case that we've had members leave both because it was more competitive and less competitive here. It's a difficult topic, but I wouldn't entirely be against something similar to the Deathmatches. I'd probably change the name and tone down some of the negative rhetoric that they had (and yeah, it was mostly in good fun, but for new members, it wasn't always apparent) but I have no issue with trying to promote a more competitive group here.

    How about, instead of a Death Match, the build(s) that get the most votes gets a feature or a Spotlight article

    Seems we agree that competition is best for the group. I think the best way to go about that is with character building contests.

    Actually, what's interesting Solias is that I've found an overhaul that does play nice with all three platforms, and... it works with SSE and it's survival mode (if you do some minor mod downloads for fixes), so yeah, right now even I'm contemplating making an rp-heavy build that's based on that mod and survival mode. My Winter Bear was super fun to do on survival and I think I may have found the right mod combo (yeah, on ps4 and everything) that will get me back into building.

    What could I see improve? I dunno, as a former host of this mad house section, I think you're doing pretty well, Deebs. I think from my perspective I think you need to do a dance on how many events is too many, you know? Sometimes builders can be overwhelmed and then they burn out.

    I think Modern Masters definitely needs to come back, because 2017 was a really good year for building. Me, even though I inherently hate competition, found myself okay with Modern Masters, because it brought back some really cool builds from 2016. As builders, sometimes we either think "Old" or think "New", but sometimes we tend to forget what was done only a short time ago.

    I'll think of more as I have time. Need to teach now.
