Dropping in for the HOST-Post (I'm the new Host)

  • January 2, 2018

As of about last week, I was officially contacted for a new role, and that role was joining Vargr as the Host of the Character Building Group. I'll assume that a lot of people know me from my incredibly long and somewhat arduous comments, but I've been a builder and build-helper for going on four years now. Yep, four consecutive years of posting builds and around 3 years, 8 months of helping people with there's. Basically, I've been pretty heavily involved in Character Building in various ways since signing up for the Vault, and apparently, that drew the eye of The Admins Three and Vargr who offered me the position.

    Who is the Dragonborn?

Well, that's a fun one. I'm a 19-year-old Australian student currently studying to become a teacher. I'm in my second year of University, and am an avid student of the realm of History, for whatever reason my High School (Year 11-12, technically called a College in a single state in the entire country...mine) decided to split things up into Major and Minors and all that, so I ended up passing with a Double Major in History (Medieval and Ancient), then the normal Maths, English but also Psychology (which I barely passed...was not great at it). But that's all boring filler info.

The important stuff, is that I've been playing Skyrim for 6 years now (11/11/11), and have a long history playing RPG's, from Baldur's Gate and Pokemon as a child to Witcher 3, Dragon Age, bit of Mass Effect, Dragon's Dogma, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and probably some that I've just straight up forgotten because I play so many. I'm also a huge fan of the NBA 2K games, and Basketball in general (play, coach and watch the game...though can't watch NBA games live which sucks).

On the Vault, I've hosted a pretty wide range of groups. I started back with Tips and Tricks and the Forums, the former is one that I only got to fill the role to be honest, though I could probably host it these days without any trouble. I was also the driving force behind the creation of the Gaming Corner (which has been revamped into the RPG Group) and hosted the Workshop for most of it's existence, until just a month ago. I've also hosted the Modder's Conclave which was pretty cool. So I've hosted plenty of groups that require different styles, from the question focused T&T and Forums, to the comment driven Workshop to the content-driven RPG and MC.

What is he doing to the Group?

Drop down here if you want to get to the actually important stuff

Here's where it gets really fun. So when I was approached for the job, I was basically given the command 'Do Stuff, lot's of stuff, change the group even' where I was given a lot of free reigns to come in and make some major changes to how the group functions. Obviously, the content won't be changing, but I have a plan that is currently two-fold but will be expanding in the future.

The first thing I'll be bringing to the Character Building Group is a set of weekly features that focuses on featuring old content. We've got years, and that's not an exaggeration, we literally have years of people creating content for the group, and my major focus (regarding features) is going to be featuring some of our old Legendary Builds each week, to do a couple things. First, you get to see some really awesome content, that you might not have seen before. Second, it gives those builds a bit more exposure, but also it'll let us see how Building has changed. It's also a way to get a lot of community input and discussion over it, because the method for these features will be poll based. Each week, you can come along and vote for One of Six builds that will be posted in a discussion. Whichever build gets the most votes will be featured, stickied within the group for sure and we'll see about the Front Page.

The second focus, will be... a secret. I haven't fully discussed this with the other Hosts and it's something that could disrupt Events which is something I don't want to do at all. So news on that will hopefully come next week. Oh I can talk about a quick change that we're hoping to make to events, it's also something that I haven't fully negotiated but it's something that I think I can poke and prod really quickly about.

Basically, Vargr and I are going to be altering how Events are run. Now, instead of being 1 month events that are just sort of over after that, they'll technically have no real end date. If we post an Event in March, but you can't get to it until May, well that's fine, post your Event Build: Whateveryacallit in May and it'll fully count for an Event. The thing that makes it worthwhile to post in March, is you get badges, and are going to be featured higher up in the Event Discussion (since builds will get added in when they come in).

I think that's it. I really want to open this up now to any suggestions that people have, either privately or publicly. Hell if you've got any thoughts on our two focuses (Features and Events) then let me know down in those comments. I'm really eager to start working in the Character Building Group, and hope to do a fine job hosting this amazing group :D

Congratz once again DB! Sounds like you and Varg have some great changes cooking in the stew pot and I'm particularly excited for the Event Build changes as I myself can't exactly catch every build or make one by the end of the month. Props on that idea :D

Can't wait to see an infamous long tedious post in the next week though ;-) (On a serious side I'm excited to see what this "secret" is all about)

I really enjoyed some of those older builds on Ning back in the day so I'm glad to see that this is one of your focuses as well. Goodluck guys!

Thanks Flamez, I'm glad the early changes sound good to you, our aim is to sort of make small changes to start off with, little things like the Event but end up with a rather consistent set of content (and discussion) constantly coming through. That's the aim anyway, part of it at least, also just going to have fun events, random discussions and that sort of thing :D

Agreed. I am notorious for not being able to make events on time. This will be a welcome change.

    Congratulations, Deebs.

I'm not entirely sure how many Events I actually completed last year...Didn't even end up finishing some of the ones I ran so I'm in the same boat as the rest of you :D Thanks, Liss, the congrats are very much appreciated

Just wanted to let everyone know that the very first, Weekly Build Feature is up. It's something I briefly mentioned in the discussion (yep, briefly :P) and figured I should update it to give a better example to those dropping by now/later

Congrats I would’ve guessed you were way older but I guess you have wisdom beyond your years. Awesome job, nice to see the changes you bring

I have said it before in a previous comment, but, I am proud to reiterate here, there could not have been a better choice for Skyrim CB, your unwavering enthusiasm, not just for CB,  but the site as a whole never ceases to amaze me my friend, and your appointment is well deserved, Kul Faraan Dovahkiin1921, Mu Siiv Hi Zok Balaan
