I'll cut right to the chase and recommend the classic Witchhunter by Twisted, a classic!

So I have utilized countless builds on here to develop a project of mine where I am creating 21 different characters for the 21 class presets in Oblivion/Morrowind. My problem is with the distinctions between Spellsword, Sorcerer and Battlemage.

As it stands now, I am using The Dark Supplicant as an outline for my Battlemage (except I am using Daedric armor and a Daedric greatsword), the Spellsword for my Spellsword (lol) and want to have a Necromancer for my Sorcerer spot.

I am kind of confused on what exactly is the difference between Battlemage and Sorcerer, as there are different skills associated with them in Oblivion and Morrowind. Overall, it seems like Sorcerers definitely use heavy armor and no weapons, while Battlemages definitely use weapons and perhaps use armor (Morrowind had Heavy Armor as a Major Skill for Battlemages and a minor skill for Sorcers, Oblivion has no armor skill for Battlemages and Heavy for Sorcerers).

I know I am arbitrarily creating these challenges for myself but any advice or recommendations would be helpful. Figuring out what to do for both these slots (Sorcerer & Battlemage) and what exactly you think the difference between the two is would be very helpful. I will share the project once I'm all done as well, and really like all of the different characters I have set up so far.

@Elyrius:  I don't have any builds in particular to reccomend but I do have a suggestion. Instead of finding one character to do everything with (which seems to be something you are struggling with) instead find multiple characters each designed to tackle a different part of the game (specifically those parts you haven't done yet).  For example if you havn't done the Civil War quest then I would recommend the Breath of Kyne as a great role play build that focuses on this specific conflict, if you havn't done the Thieves guild then you could take the Thief and just do the guild questline, etc.  I've found this to be far more enjoyable and it's something I wish I did when i first bought the game (instead I did everything on one character which kind of ruins some of the game).

@ Dean:  Interesting project you have going there.  Part of the problem is that Morrowind and Oblivion both define the classes diferently, my suggestion would be to pick one of those games and just focus on it's interpretation.  The current Modern Masters even uses the Oblivion classes specifically as a breakdown for its categories.  So with that in mind I'm going to answer from an Oblivion point of view.  Spellword, Battlemage, and Sorcerer often get confused for each other, and I didn't really understand the difference when I first encountered this site, the descriptions in the archives are practically interchangeable really just being the same phrase reworded three times.  However there are some clear distinctions in what each of these classes uses for its offense and defense and it's how I categorize them.

Spellsword:  Offense (bound weapons, destruction magic) Defense (physical armor)

Battlemage:  Offense (physical weapons) Defense (magical armor, alteration flesh spells)

Sorcerer:  Offense (conjuration and destruction magic)  Defense (physical armor)

@Vargr White-Tree: I think you are spot on in pointing out that the differences between the games is what is confusing me. I think your explanation is very helpful as well. I am doing more research and am going to start my builds once I decide on the exact skills I am going to implement. thanks again!

I recall a build based on Ancient Norse "wand-wed". Anyone know what the build was?

Anyone got any suggestions as to a build that would be fun to play on the upcoming survival mode?

Hey guys! After years of playing I've grown tired of Skyrim's major questlines, but there are still many areas I have yet to visit. So I would like to play some wanderer-type or similar character that fulfills most of these requirements:

    • -RP motivation for exploring dungeons/landmarks that aren't targets of quests. Exploration for the sake of exploration feels forced to me
    • -Possibly some gameplay benefit from exploration, too. (Maybe alchemy?)
    • -Should be able to get your essential equipment/spells/abilities very early
    • -No permanent residence, you should only need as much stuff as you can carry
    • -Only one crafting skill or none at all
    • -Some degree of variation in combat tactics so I won't get bored by lvl20

Usually I prefer mages to thieves and thieves to warriors (mostly because of the last point), but any archetype should be fine. I would appreciate any recs, even if it's a build that only partially fits my description, but you think it may give me some ideas to make my own. Thanks in advance!

@seriouslyitsmyname - This is one of my favorites and a very interesting one! The Arrowsworn . From this you could keep the roleplay - being a monk of Arkay gives plenty of reason to go into dungeons and put the dead back to rest and you could change the gameplay a bit to add some more flavour. The build I intend to post in the next few days uses Archery and the bound bow along with unarmed combat with the ordinator mod which could cover your needs for variation in combat along with the roleplay of the arrowsworn build and you could add alchemy rather than blacksmithing if you 'd like. I mostly suggested the Arrowsworn because It gives a lot regarding the roleplay.
