Skyrim Character Building/Modder’s Conclave Event:   Follow Me Follow You

No one can escape the HYPE TRAIN!!!

Welcome everyone to Skyrim CB’s latest event Follow Me Follow You where we will be joining forces with the illustrious Modder’s Conclave to deliver something fun and unique to all Skyrim players, not just builders.  A few months back the Varg'Ette was brainstorming event ideas and Lissette (a fountain for great ideas) came up with the idea of an event that focused on followers, specifically playing as one, thus Follow Me Follow You was born.

Follow Me Follow You is about recreating follower NPC’s as the player character. You will pick a follower and play the game as that character. This means limiting your skills to the “primary skills” of that NPC and obeying their level cap. Here is an example using my favorite Boethian sacrifice, Sven.

Sven’s primary skills are Alchemy, Enchanting, Smithing, Archery, One-Handed, and Two-Handed. These are the only skills you can perk if you choose Sven as your subject. Furthermore Sven’s level cap is 20 meaning that you would only be allowed to level this character to 20 and no further.

This in and of itself provides some interesting gameplay and roleplay choices for the player, but we have another twist to spice things up, the implementation of an overhaul mod. Since mod’s have becomes somewhat ubiquitous we thought showcasing them in an event would be fun. So we reached out to the Modder’s Conclave and decided to make this a joint event between the two groups. The mod part of this would be to create a Modder’s Log played and written in the character of a NPC follower.

So what constitutes an “overhaul mod” you might be asking? We recognize an overhaul mod as changing one or more of the following three things, Difficulty, Enemy AI, or Restructures Perks since an alteration in any one of these things would make an impact on the entirety of the game, from Helgen to Sovngarde. Some examples would be Ordinator, Yash, or Requiem.

Since most of you are probably here to create a build, and may have no idea about what a Modder's Log might entail, we figured it'd be best to add a little bit of a sales pitch in here. Modder's Logs (are in Dragonborn's very humble, and totally unbiased opinion) a fun, interesting and unique way to approach playing a character, it involves writing a Log/Journal/Written Let's Play of what you've done, either with in-character quotes coupled with the player's gameplay notes, or really any combination of those two.

    - Dragonborn1721

So here are your options for participating in the event.

    • Opt. 1 Create a build emulating one of the NPC followers using the vanilla game mechanics, meaning no mods. This is for those who are either uncomfortable using mods or are still playing on an older console.

    • Opt. 2 Create a build emulating one of the NPC followers with an overhaul mod that adjusts Difficulty, Enemy AI, or Restructures Perks.

    • Opt. 3 Create a Modder’s Log detailing your play as one of the NPC followers using an overhaul mod.

Any and all of the above would qualify you as an event participant. Now it wouldn’t be an event without some rules.

    Wut iz rulz?

    RULES

    1.  First take the time to read through our Character Building resources, especially if this is your first time creating a character build. Also, check out other builds.

    Skyrim Character Building

    Character Building Resources

    Guide to Character Building

    Character Build Template

    2.  A build submitted for this event must be based off of a NPC follower this can be a standard follower like Sven or a quest follower like Anska. The build must adhere to the primary skills and level cap of that follower as represented on UESP.  Here is a link to their follower's page. Skyrim: Followers

Amendment:  It has come to our attention that some characters have odd skill sets that completely fly in the face of how the character is presented in game, like master level enchanters not having the enchanting skill.  We are therefore allowing the inclusion of one additional skill beyond the primary skills listed in order to better round out the characters profile.

    3.  Modder’s Logs submitted for this event must be based off of an overhaul mod that changes one or more of the following, Difficulty, Enemy AI, or Restructures Perks. Some good examples would be Ordinator, Yash, or Requiem. Furthermore the log should be written with a focus on your NPC follower, this can mean either it being their voice or just consistant mentionings of who they are (starting each line with "And Sven (who sucks) did so and so" would totally count). Modder’s Logs also require that you either complete a major quest or reach the level cap of the NPC. Major quests include the following.

Main Questline, Dawnguard Main Questline, Dragonborn Main Questline, Companions Questline, College of Winterhold Questline, Thieves Guild Questline, or the Dark Brotherhood Questline

Take the time to check through the Modder's Logs Archives (which has all the rules) and read some of the other works that people have created over there.

    4.  You have from midnight Eastern Standard Time on the 1st of June to 11:59pm EST on the 30th of June to post your build in the Skyrim CB group or your Modder’s Log in the Modder’s Conclave group. Also be sure to link your completed build or log to this thread and we’ll add it as a showcase for all completed content.

    5.  All builds are to be labeled. Instead of using the standard “Character Build:” prefix, use “Event Build:” instead. Also, be sure to tag your build or log with theEvent:FollowMeFollowYou tag to be considered eligible for the event.

    6. All Modders Logs are to be labeled and tagged in the following way. Event Log [Log Name Here] instead of the current Modder's Log prefix. The official tags should be the following

Event: Follow Me Follow You, Skyrim Modder's Log, Skyrim Event Log

    7.  Current workshop builds. If a build currently in the Workshop meets the criteria of the Event, it can be used for the Event; you only need to change its designation in the workshop to indicate that it is now an event. However, a build already posted in CB cannot be reused. You must post a new build.

    8.  Finally all participants will be awarded a badge for their hard work and contribution to this event.

    REGISTRATION

Finally this section will be updated regularly to feature WIP’s for the event, if you choose to post one, and the final product. Support, encourage, and cheer each other on.

Quick question, are you only able to use your selected NPC's main skills or can you use other skills but not perk them?  I ask because to the best of my knowledge, none of the followers have Lockpicking or Pickpocketing as a skill which would mean a thief build is not possible if you can only use that same skills as your selected NPC.

Astute question TexasC4 and this is something I thought about and finally decided that yes you can use other skills you just can't perk them.  My decision is based on the fact that you can tell any NPC to pick a lock and they will, furthmore all NPC's can sneak and will use whatever weapon you give them even if they don't have the skill for that weapon type.

I have a question about patched games. Like for example, Uthgerd in the base game...

    Heavy armor, one-handed, archery, block

    Patched game

    Heavy armor, two-handed, archery, block

This reflects both her dialogue in the game and her default equipped weaponry and armor. And some mods also need a patched game to work, which means their combat is effected. In addition, if you play with EFC, which is a faction overhaul, this also changes the combat style of several npcs.

Several other followers are also changed based on their default armor/gear choices. Athis, Erik, Njada, and several others, Mjoll I think is one too. Would you then consider the Patches as an overhaul?

The solution would potentially be to not allow patched builds? Or select a follower that wasn't effected by the patches, which lol, sort of narrows your list.

Have the follower that is following your follower unlock your locks. :P

@Lissette:  I see no problem in using "patched" npc's like a two-handed uthgerd.  I would just mention it in your build that the primary skills are changed by the "better Uthgerd mod" which switches one-handed for two-handed.  This is a mod event so I don't want to discourage the use of non-cheat mods like the one you mentioned.

Cool, I am very good about mentioning mod versus vanilla in my own builds, so I'd definitely add the changes and then provide vanilla alternates. I'll give this some thought and let you know my npc.

I also have a question. I says on the wiki that Eola has an illusion skill of 20 at level 50, yet she is seen using illusion spells and it says under the Trivia section:

"Though she is never seen using Illusion spells in combat, Eola appears well-versed in this school of magic: She escapes from Markarth using the Invisibility spell, and was able to mentally-control Brother Verulus into quietly walking to his demise at the conclusion of The Taste of Death.

So can I use illsuion or not? She uses invisibility which is an expert spell but her illusion skill remains at 20... it's a paradox.
