    Legend says that the Ghostwalker, Veryag Oath-Fire, was once a normal young boy. His father was a well-known sea captain of the ‘White Wolf’, a ship transporting goods over the Sea of Ghosts, with its homeport being Solitude. Since a very young age Veryag dreamed of joining the Imperial Legion and serve the Empire, just like his father did in his youth. Veryag would often accompany his father on his travels to Solstheim, Morrowind and High Rock and was very curious to see new cultures and lands. But soon his life would be changed forever. The ‘White Wolf’ was on course of returning from High Rock and was caught into a severe storm. Mountain high waves were lashing against the ship while it rocked very hard. Despite the fear of capsize the crew followed the orders of the captain to maintain the course and set sails high. As the ship was rocking back and forth on the savage waves, Veryag heard whispers from the deck. Voices were calling his name. Almost like under a spell, he followed the voices to the boarder of the ship. A crew member saw the boy and alerted the captain. The boy was staring dreamily in to the black water and even the screams of the crew and his father couldn’t reach him. Suddenly a wave shot up high in front of Veryag and countless spectral hands pulled him off the ship and into the water. As he entered the water, he finally woke up but his fighting and struggling against the water masses was desperate. Without a second thought, his father jumped into the water to save his boy and just as Veryag stopped moving his father reached him and brought him back to the surface. Back on the ship, the crew thought Veryag was dead but yet he started moving again and came back to life. Even though he was breathing and alive, his body was changed. His skin and hair became white as snow, and his father was certain it was only a temporary effect of the ice-cold water. Back in Solitude, his father brought Veryag to a powerful healer, but only to be disappointed. The healer told them that this effect was permanent and could get worse and even lead to death, but the healer promised to try everything possible to prevent Veryag from dying.

    As Veryag grew up he developed more and more supernatural abilities. Some were related to the potions the healer gave him, others could only be explained that the Sea of Ghosts changed him. His hair became white as snow and his eyes changed between yellow and green. Due to his changed appearance but also increased sword abilities, magical, poison and disease resistance, Veryag Oath-Fire has sworn to become the ultimate monster hunter, a Ghostwalker, to protect Skyrim and its people.

     

    Race: Nord

    Stat distribution: 1-2-1

    Standing Stone: Atronach Stone. The ability to absorb spells is extremely important for this character as the main enemies (Dragon Priests, Vampires, Hagraven, Draugr…) are using spells.

    Skills: One-Handed, Block, Heavy Armor, Alchemy, Speech, Destruction, Smithing

    Shouts: Fire Breath, Aura Whisper, Become Ethereal, Slow Time

    Spells: Flames, Fire Rune, Shock Rune, Lightning Cloak, Clairvoyance

    Gear: Dawnguard Heavy Armor/Gauntlets/Boots and Full Helmet, Shield of Solitude, Rahgot, Ohtar

    Weapons: Silver Sword, Steel sword, The Pale Blade, Ghostblade, occasionally a Crossbow

    Jewelry: I didn’t settle on anything specific, but rather on what I needed in that moment, mainly to increase my stats or resistances.

    Active Effects and Abilities: The Fire Within, Force without Effort, Ethereal Spirit

    DLCs: Dawnguard (essential), Dragonborn (optional)

     

    For Roleplay Purposes

    Hometown and Thaneship: Solitude

    Alignment: True Neutral

     

    This build is heavily influenced by the game series The Witcher and the main character Geralt of Rivia. I enjoyed these games a lot in the past (haven’t played The Wild Hunt yet, PC is too weak) and so came the idea to roleplay a monster slayer in Skyrim as there are plenty of options. There have been already many builds revolving around bringing the Witcher to Skyrim, but I'm proud to to present you my own idea of a Witcher in Skyrim. However my goal with this build was also to play a character without the use of archery that is both viable and fun to play in the late-game, with, of course, an interesting roleplay and gameplay.

     

    The Ghostwalker is a heavy armor wearing, sword and spell swinging bounty hunter and professional monster slayer. Since his childhood, he underwent strong magical and chemical treatment which increased his reflexes, endurance and senses. His sharp mind helps him in preparing any battle sorely and to always have a backup plan in hand. His appearance might resemble an aged and seasoned warrior but his mutations have granted him longevity and immunity against diseases. Apart from his knowledge of swordfight and magic, the Ghostwalker is an excellent alchemist and able to mix strong potions to increase his battle skills. Although enhancing his skills with potions comes with a price.

     

     

    The Ghostwalker might react differently to ingredients than normal humans and some potions might even decrease his fighting abilities. He must choose carefully which potions to drink in order to stay sharp minded for the task ahead.

    The Ghostwalker is a master in swordfight. His weaponry contains two swords, a silver sword strong against undead creatures and the Ghostblade against humans. He carries the Shield of Solitude for protection against tough enemies and to show his allegiance to his hometown, Solitude.

    If the battle calls for it, the Ghostwalker will wear an ancient mask with magical powers. These belonged to the Dragon Priests, powerful lich beings that honored the most dreadful Dragons as gods, but now they have become the Ghostwalker’s ultimate prey.

     

     

     

     

    ‘Never underestimate your opponent’ – that’s the Ghostwalker’s number one rule. Proper preparation of armor, weapons and especially potions can be life-saving if your enemy manages to overwhelm you. And this brings us to the first section of the gameplay:

     

    Alchemy 

    If you are familiar with the Witcher games, you know that some potions have both positive and negative effects and as consequence you need to carefully choose when to drink a specific potion. With this character build I tried to bring these characteristics to Skyrim and it works out of the box. At the end of the alchemy skill tree there is the ‘Purity’ perk which cleanses potions of any negative effects and poisons of any positive effects. Without this perk we’ll be able to mix potions with both effects, which is exactly what we want. So let’s take a look at the recipes and I’ll will explain more in detail:

     

    As you can see, most of these potions have negative effects as well, but this makes things interesting because it forces us to use only certain potions in certain situations. Next, let’s take a look at the Ghostwalker’s prey and what potions to use against them:

     

     

     

    *Note: In the Witcher series, Witcher generally don’t kill Dragons. They say it’s against their moral code to kill sentient being, which Dragons are, but the truth is, there’s no Witcher moral code. It’s just an excuse to accept or decline a contract according to their own personal rules. Or perhaps it’s the fact that Dragons are strong and dangerous creatures. Either way, the Ghostwalker has no preference of prey. He kills everything.

    The potions list and prey table are screenshots from my word document because otherwise I couldn't have done it the way I wanted it. Feel free to save them as pictures and have a quick look during the playthrough.

     

    Mod alert: I used a mod called 'Sorcerer Renamer' to rename the created potions to the names above. Make sure to click 'Unique renaming' while using the mod to rename a potion.

     

    Weapons

     

    The Ghostwalker carries two swords, a silver sword and a steel sword, both serving different purposes. While the silver sword is strong against undead enemies such as Draugr, Skeletons, Ghosts, Vampires and reanimated creatures the steel sword is used against humans and animals. Silver swords can be found in Castle Volkihar or on members of the Silver Hand, a Werewolf hunting guild that has strongholds at Driftshade Refuge and Gallows Rock if not a member of the Companions. As the silver sword cannot be upgraded at a Forge, it should be replaced with a sword enchanted with fire damage/turn undead at a later time.

     

    Later in the game, the Ghostblade will become a useful upgrade to the steel sword. Not only does it look cool with its ethereal blue appearance but the enchantment is pretty useful as well. Its enchantment deals three extra points of damage that ignores armor and it has unlimited uses and no need to recharge. The Ghostblade can be found at the end of the quest ‘A Love beyond Death’.

     

     

     

    Although I planned to not use archery, I did use a crossbow in certain situations. An Enhanced Crossbow, available during the Dawnguard quest, ignores 50% of the target’s armor, which is very useful against tough enemies like Bandit chiefs that wear thick, heavy armor.

     

    Armor

     

    The Ghostwalker wears a set of Dawnguard Heavy Armor and combined with the Dawnguard Full Helmet the Ghostwalker gets 25% less damage from vampire attacks.

     

    Against other enemies the Ghostwalker wears his Dragonpriest trophies, the Dragonpriest masks. I found the most useful masks to be Hevnoraak, granting immunity to poison and diseases, Rahgot, granting +70 Stamina, Otar, granting +30% resistance against Fire, Shock and Frost damage and Nahkriin, granting +50 Magicka, Destruction and Restoration cost reduction by 20%. However, these great effects come with a price. To double the improvements of the masks, the Daedric Smithing skill is needed.

     

    The shield the Ghostwalker carries is the Shield of Solitude. Besides the sentimental value of carrying the shield of his hometown, Solitude, into battle, this strong shield grants him also enhanced magic resistance and blocking reflexes. It is a reward after a two-part quest, which is perfectly suited for the Ghostwalker.

     

    Signs

     

    In the Witcher games, Witchers are able to use spells called Signs. These signs don’t need a lot of preparation or magical knowledge and can be used single-handed.

    In Skyrim, these signs can be easily used as well, in the form of shouts or magic spells. Let’s take a look:

     

     

     

    Aard (Unrelenting Force): A telekinetic wave that can throw back, knock down or stagger opponents. *If the Ghostwalker chooses to meditate on this sign, the Ghostwalker will be 25% more stable against staggering and increase the chance to stagger opponents by 25%.

     

     

     

     

    Yrden (Fire Rune): A magical rune placed on the ground, which will wound opponents. The Destruction skill ‘Intense Flames’ causes targets to flee if their health is low.

     

     

     

     

    Igni (Fire Breath): A gush of flames that wounds opponents in large area of effect. As one word of the Fire Breath shout is quest-locked (Companions) only two words are obtainable for this build. This is not an issue at all because, one word single word is fast and effective. *If the Ghostwalker chooses to meditate on this sign, damage will be increased by 25%.

     

     

     

    Quen (Atronach Stone): This permanent sign is triggered on the Ghostwalker as soon as he activates the Atronach Stone. It increases Magicka by 50, +50% Spell Absorbation and -50% Magicka Regeneration.

     

     

    The next two signs are original signs for this build:

     

     

     Tempus (Slow Time): The Ghostwalker takes control over the time flow and can easily evade  incoming attacks.

     

     

     

     

     Aetherius (Become Ethereal): The Ghostwalker walks in the spectral sphere and is invulnerable  to any damage and appears as a ghost to human eyes. *If the Ghostwalker chooses to  meditate on this sign, health regeneration during this effect will be increased by 25%.

     

     

    *To meditate on a sign, you need to talk to Paarthurnax during the Main Quest

     

    In the Witcher games these signs have no cooldown as they count as spells but in Skyrim it really limits the game flow as shouts have long cooldowns. To make fights more fluidly while using shouts I used a cheat to decrease the shout cooldown to 0 seconds with the following command:

     

    player.setav.shoutrecoverymult [value]

     

    1 = 100% recovery time. 0.5 = 50% recovery time. 0 = no recovery time between shouts.

     

    If you are scared that cheats might affect Steam achievements, I can safely say that they don’t.

    For those that don't want to use cheats or those playing on consoles, you can still wear an Amulet Of Talos (20% cooldown reduction) and get the Blessing Of Talos (another 20%) to get an effective 40% cooldown reduction. Combined with the Restoration Loop you can easily reduce the cooldown to 0 seconds. Here's how to:

    1. Equip Fortify Alchemy item
    2. Create Fortify Restoration Potion
    3. Drink Potion
    4. Unequip Fortify Alchemy Item and then re-equip it
    5. Repeat steps 2-4 until you get the desired result
    6. Equip Amulet of Talos

    Combat

    When facing your prey, drink your potion and switch to either the silver sword or steel sword. Start by using the lightning cloak spell and your signs to weaken your enemy and then attack them while they are stunned or staggered. Alternate between using your signs, spells and sword attacks.

    As you may have guessed, using shouts with 100% cooldown reduction can become pretty fast overpowered so don’t abuse it and rely on your swords rather than on your magic. Use the signs, especially the Igni sign as AoE attack and not to focus single targets, that way it won’t become overpowered.

     

     

    Using your shield together with a sword makes it easy to block incoming attacks and immediately bash the opponent back, stagger them and kill them with a precise slashing. A shield is also useful against mages, archers and dragons and should definitely be used from the beginning to level the skill as fast as possible.

    After a fight against a monster, let the effects of the potions cool down, and heal yourself with regular healing potions.

     

     

    The Ghostwalker makes coin by tracking down monsters that pose a threat to humans. When you reach a new village ask around if something troubles the people but often people will come to the Ghostwalker. As monster hunting is your profession and only source of income, always ask for gold or some kind of reward. Next try to gather as much information about the target. Once you know what you’re up against, prepare the fight by brewing your potions and selecting your sword for the task. Don’t be afraid to seek out a library to find a book that might reveal a weakness of your prey. Some examples of useful books are:

    - Herbane's Bestiary: Hagravens

    - Herbane's Bestiary: Ice Wraiths

    - Herbane's Bestiary: Dwarven Automatons

    - Harvesting Frostbite Spider Venom

    - Herbalist's guide to Skyrim

    - Troll Slaying

     

    Walk or ride out to the target and gather any alchemical ingredients you find on the way.

    When entering a city, seek out the tavern and ask the inn keeper about information on jobs. Often they have a bounty contract, which may be right up your alley. Even if your specialization is killing monsters, some holds require help in eliminating a bandit camp and even if the coin is not much, it’s enough to survive the next few days.

     

    Mod Alert: If you want to increase the rewards gained from bounty contracts, install the mod ‘Bounty Gold’. It comes with an in-game configurator to easily adjust the gold reward.

     

     


    Sleep is only found during day but the Ghostwalker knows that evil never sleeps and is able to hunt his prey for days without resting. After killing your target, take your trophy and head back to civilization to find a bottle of ale and well-earned rest.

     

     

    Try to travel as light as possible, carry only your weapons, armor, potions and ingredients. Other items like torches, can be picked up in caves or camps. Don’t pick up every item you find to sell them. For this build, selling items to make gold is not an option and gold should only come through contracts and quests.

     

    If you want to further immerse your Ghostwalker/Witcher experience, try to level up only when you reach a bonfire. This makes fights slightly more difficult as you can’t get that instant full health during fights because of a level up, but also more rewarding when you finally reach a camp with a bonfire and makes the level up process feel like a much needed rest.

     

    The Ghostwalker's reputation

    In the Witcher games, people are often suspicious of Witchers. They don't really like them but yet they need them to solve their monster problems. Geralt himself has the nickname 'butcher of Blaviken' because he killed a bandit group to save a village but to the villagers it looked as if he slayed them without reason.

    For the Ghostwalker it's not different. People might fear him or disrespect him because they know what happened to him and guards might give him a bad look, so get a small bounty to get the dialogue from the guards that they know you.

    The speech skill is used purely for roleplaying reasons. It allows to persuade people to get information out of mercenaries or intimidate road thieves.

    Mod alert: to level speech I use a mod called 'Learn and read speechcraft', which levels the skill whenever you read a book that is not a skill book. Pretty handy!  

     

    Alignment (contains spoilers of the quest ‘In my time of need’)

     

    Now this is where it becomes a bit difficult. In the Witcher series, Geralt tries to be ‘true neutral’. He tries hard to stay out of a stranger’s affairs that has nothing to do with his job. Yet he gets involved in politics or accepts quests he would normally not do. It’s hard for Geralt to close his eyes and look away from cruelties because he is a good man at heart and still has feelings despite his mutations. So how can this behavior be roleplayed in Skyrim? Play the Ghostwalker as a good character that fights for good people. And this is where it has to be narrowed down. Good people have good intentions, help others in need and are selfless. They have values and follow a moral code. Yet the Ghostwalker has always one goal, getting paid for a job.

    The first moral test for my characters is always the quest ‘In my time of need’. This is where I usually decide what alignment my characters are because this quest makes you rethink your intention just a moment before you take action. Saadia appeals to the Ghostwalker as a poor, helpless woman and of course he’s going to help her. But moments before killing Kematu, the enemy speaks about a different side of that helpless woman, a treacherous side, but you can’t know for sure who is telling the truth because you have to either fight or agree immediately with Kematu and can’t go back to question Saadia. The Ghostwalker may close his eyes and overlook what Kematu tells him about Saadia or question his own moral and refuse to obey a traitor. Out of honor, the Ghostwalker sided with Saadia and killed Kematu and his men. Justification: He agreed to a contract to kill Kematu and gets paid, the rest is not his business. It’s not his job to judge whether Saadia is good or bad. His job is to find and kill a target. This brings us back to the quote which I added at the beginning from ‘The Witcher 3’ trailer named ‘Killing monsters’. Go watch it, it pictures the moral conflict of a neutral person perfectly, because ‘the degree IS arbitrary and the definition of good and evil ARE blurred.’

    One final quote about Geralt I found on the web, which nails it:

    “He would not take an arrow for a king, but he would for a friend if forced to. Not a martyr type though. Better to deflect the arrow. If he knows the arrow won't kill, he might ignore it altogether if it means he can deal with the archer faster.” 

    To round up this build, let’s take a look at the essential quests and locations for the Ghostwalker to visit:

    Monster hunting quests:

    - Dawnguard Questline: The Dawnguard questline is an excellent choice for roleplaying the Ghostwalker. First, he is kind of suspicious of Serana, doesn't take her along on his quests, but soon he will learn to trust and respect her despite being a vampire. Spoiler: After the questline you can convince Serana to heal herself from vampirism and even take her as your apprentice

    - Waking Nightmare

    - Hunting Dragon Priests

    - Hunting Dragons

    - Laid To Rest (Morthal)

    - The Wolf Queen Awakened (min. level 40 to get the strongest version of the Shield of Solitude)

    For some reason I feel really generous today.

    I think that these would go much better with the rest of the build than the classic ones from Wiki. They´re all yours, I don´t plan to use them for a build, just for some writing artwork.

    But now, the builds itself. YES! BLOODY PERFECT, MATE! The potions, the blades, the use of shouts as signs. I love it. I wouldn´t mind seeing little bit expanded Bestiary similar to witcher ones, but that would make the build too long, I think.

    Speaking of the shouts, I would recommend adding the option of using Talos Amulet + Shrine of Talos (+ maybe little Resto Loop Glitch) for the Console Players.

    Anyway...excelent work, mate. :)

    Those are nice little icons, Karver. 

    Lol, at least this Geralt of Rivia will have a better voice. I stopped playing the first Witcher after the prologue. I loved the game, loved the action, could not stand his voice. 

    Since you're using mods, I'd recommend one that removes the level requirement from leveled gear. Like you'll get the strongest form of the SHield of Solitude instead of having to wait until you're level, was it 46? Yeah, screw that, if your character can send Potema to hell at level 1, you deserve that shield at full strength. 

    I like the detail of the presentation. I have a clear notion on how to approach gameplay, which is great and there is roleplay too.

    This is a pretty much spot on Witcher build AllSpark. I really love the way you've approached the moral code here, fitting it in fairly well with both Geralt's character in-game, and using the example from Skyrim, that should really help those who haven't played the Witcher to really get the character a little bit more.

    Let's see, the backstory is excellent naturally, and I like the way you've really incorperated the alchemy of the Witcher to fit Skyrim (the potions are just so spot on), I agree with Karver that an expanded beastiary would be really cool, maybe it could fit as a side RP project or something? But that's mostly just my Witcher fan-boy side talking, I think it's great the way it is right now. 

    You've got my like mate, excellent build.

    Thanks a lot for the icons, Karver, they look nice, I'll add them in, and thanks for the feedback. I'll add the vanilla method for shout cooldowns as well. Is the Resto Loop glitch still unpatched on console? And doesn't it need enchanting to work?

    Thanks for the feedback, Lissette. I know that mod, but don't use it because I don't mind waiting until the character is the right level to get the highest enchantment. Makes me focus on other quests, too. The questline is available at level 10, so no level 1 Shield of Solitude :P oh btw I recently installed Witcher 1 again and to be honest I was kind of surprised how the hell I enjoyed it when it came out. Graphics are bad, controls are worse. In the past I finished the game 2 times to get the different endings, I immediately removed it again lol

    Thanks Dragonborn, I appreciate it! Yeah, the potions were the fun part. First I had to 'translate' the stats from Witcher to Skyrim stats and then I used this page to find the right ingredients. I tested a lot to finally find the right positve and negative effects without getting knocked out by the own potion. I slipped in 3 original potions (The Ghostwalker's Spirit, The Hunter's Prowess and Mara's Kiss) and I'm quite satisfied with how everything turned out.

    Hmm, a bestiary,... I wanted that to be part of the roleplaying experience, that the player finds in-game information on how to defeat they prey.     The Resto Loop...well, you're not asking the right person. :D I know it exists but because I never used it or was interested in it I have no god damn clue xD

    Thanks a lot for the icons, Karver, they look nice, I'll add them in, and thanks for the feedback. I'll add the vanilla method for shout cooldowns as well. Is the Resto Loop glitch still unpatched on console? And doesn't it need enchanting to work?

    It's not patched at all on consoles, but Xbox One players can download the Unofficial Patch and get it sorted that way (but I have a feeling that there's a patch for the patch). A Fortify Resto Loop can be started with even just one item with Fortify Alchemy and any Fortify Restoration potion.

    1. Equip Fortify Alchemy item
    2. Create Fortify Restoration Potion
    3. Drink Potion
    4. Unequip Fortify Alchemy Item and then re-equip it
    5. Repeat steps 2-4 until you get the desired result
    6. Equip Amulet of Talos

    Oh okay, haha same for me. I only tried it once but that was with the unofficial patches... it didn't work so I stuck with my console commands haha

    Ah thanks! Then I had a different glitch in mind, I think 100+ in smithing or something...
