SAVE OUR BUILDS!!

  • September 25, 2016

It’s been pretty depressing watching all the years of work in this group go up in smoke during the recent site move. Many of the amazing contributors from the past are all but gone (Ponty/No Snakes/Alastor/TZ.....many more) and aren’t in a position to salvage what remains of their labours, those that do remain are left with the daunting task of piecing their work back together before Ning is gone for good...

I’ve been looking for some kind of solution to repair all the broken image links in the most efficient way possible (with very little luck). Many of the builds here contain multiple images which makes it an incredibly time consuming process.

I do have a method I’d like to quickly share with the group hosts and any other members here that are struggling with all of this.

    • For a start you’re going to need Google Chrome if you don’t already have it. (Though other browsers may have their own methods)

    • Next you need to visit the chrome web store and install a free extension called ‘Image Collector’, find it here.

    • Then restart Chrome and boot up the desired build over on Ning.

Image collector should quickly start working by finding ALL the original art files for the pages contents and also grants you several options for what you wish to do with them. This is incredibly useful for quickly sending all the files to your hard drives 'Downloads' folder or perhaps a seperate location online.

For members with multiple builds to save this is a great tool.

For the admins here it could be perfect for quickly providing the source files to fix up other peoples builds, the Hall of Fame would definitely be a good place to start as the builds there were selected my the masses to be the cream of the crop.

I hope at least someone out there finds this useful.

    Good luck.

*sigh* I feel ya dude. I ported my builds to my own google drive before the move but I now regret having 30 stupid fucking builds. Can we gather volunteers to hold temporary admin/host powers to edit and copy builds over? If we divide up the work it shouldn't take too long.

I'd leave that choice to the CB Hosts, but I'd be in favor of a group of people salvaging old builds. Hell I'll even join in and help! If I wasn't limited to my phone only for the last week or so then I likely would've done some of that already.

Based on Todd's current 'stay-or-go' discussion, it sounds like we don't have a whole lot of time to get an effort like that accomplished. I agree though... CB is hardly worth anything when some of the site's most popular builds are just words and broken images.

Getting some CB archivists is an intriguing idea, and while it might be problematic giving an army of folks temporary admin powers, anybody  can upload images that an administrator can use to fix busted-image builds.

If we stay on this platform, I'll pay out-of-pocket for an extra month on Ning so that we can continue saving builds.

If we stay, then I'll help as well. Perhaps we could get a solid core of build restoration specialists and then broadwave an announcement that we need archivists to capture and upload images so the resto-folk can do their thing.

I'm not working at the moment, so while I have no money to contribute I do have time :)  So if someone can write up a quick tutorial on how to port builds I'd be glad to spend some time doing that.  Just point me in the right direction and I'll help

This looks like a very viable option - thank you Mason for discovering it

It looks like what we'd need to do is

    1. Write a very simple tutorial as to how to fix up builds

    2. Recruit a small army of 'Build Editors' and give them the temporary permissions to do the work

    3. Start with the Hall of Fame and then as far down the pecking order as we can

Obviously we would need extra months on Ning to do the work. For one, I would be prepared to purchase an extra month on Ning to add onto the month that Todd already offered. That would give us two months grace. If one or two others would chip in, then we would have enough to be able to keep Ning available to the end of the year. Surely we could get the job done in that time with, say, 10-12 people working on it?

I'd be happy to donate, but I'd have to wait until next month to do so. :(

Hi everybody, just wanted to let you know that we are discussing this in EC and that we will be forming a group, no, no, no, what am I saying?

    *clears throat*

    We will be forming an...

Elite Thrassian Task force whose sole purpose in life will be to replenish the richness of our domain with images long lost. We must restore the Kingdom back to its original ordered state so all visitors *cough* prospective minions *cough* will quake in our glory.

So rise Polwygles! Rise! Undergo your metamorphasis into  Grave-worms proper and rally with your masters in this grand undertaking. The Kingdom of Thras calls you, beckons you to its aid!

    The Varg'Ette calls...
