Hells yeah! Use a torch instead Jin! It's more thematic than a shield anyway. Edit: thematic ..lol

Well I'm glad you enjoyed it bro! Even if it did break that pure Mage feel for ya. Thanks for all the feedback though. It's always interesting to hear about someone's experience with any of my builds :)

Never done that before! Do you have to unequip your off-hand in order for the block to kick in? (cause I hate doing that... so lazy xD).

Running through Fellglow like I own the place... the mages are like, "Whaaaa...?" And with Flames. Just Flames (or Sparks for Dunmer mages); it really is incredible :D

I've gotta ask Jin, without Dawnguard you can't store the Atronach Stone in the Aetherial Crown. Do you just have the Atronach Stone as your only one? And if so, are you still using the Familiar?

Oddly enough, I'm still using the Mage. I'm in the mid-20's, so the 3/3 Mage armor (still just using Stoneflesh) and 3/3 magic resistance are doing the trick. In a couple levels I will probably switch over to Atronach.

Sadly, I'm losing the familiar almost immediately after casting him in battle, but I still cast him while traveling (I liked that RP aspect of having the familiar as a constant traveling companion, but it has also proven a useful distraction for the occasional saber cat/bear ambush, buying me just enough time to cast a flesh spell and switch back to dual flames). When I take on the Atronach stone, I'll have to say goodbye to my traveling companion... Nothing drives me more crazy than an atronach stone-related summon-fail.

Yeah plus you can't use Ash Shell with him so you lose yet another great strategy there. I mentioned it in the build but he's great in 1v1s for a steady stream of damage against a tough enemy. Just make sure to keep the attacker's attention and dodge accordingly. That was part of my roleplay for the build too. He was like my best friend so I'd try to prioritize his health over mine to a certain extent.

What this build has done for me that my other Mage playthroughs have not allowed is given me a highly increased ability to move and weave while on the offensive. Cast-and-shoot spells are difficult for me to accurately make on the run, but the steady stream of novice spells lets me move all over the place while dealing damage. As a result I'm taking far less damage than I normally do because my enemies can't get a bead on me, or are swinging when I've already moved on... it's like a defensive offense :D

This is, by far, the most mobile character I've played. It really is a joy to experience... even gimped out with just vanilla ;D

That, my friend, is my gift to you haha! Seriously though, if you pick up the DLC in the future you've got to replay this at full potential. Between toggling the Atronach Stone, implementing Mirage, and Ash Shell in general you're missing out on some of the better tactics of the build. I am very pleased to hear how well it adapts to vanilla Skyrim though. I've only just realized but most of the listed quests are vanilla anyway.
