Hi, TED here with another build!  Something I’ve noticed on the Blog is a lack of builds that focus around the Conjured Seeker.  I’m sure there are some that have that listed as a spell to use, but how many of them utilize this glorious Daedra to their full potential?  With the Siphoner, you get exactly that PLUS more!  Without further ado (no, it’s not adieu because that’s French for goodbye), here it is!

Note: This build does utilize content from the Dragonborn DLC and a shout from the Dawnguard DLC.

    Backstory

I never saw the likes of him.  There was something unholy about his presence; it was as if he were the manifestation of evil.  Simine and I were traveling from Daenia’s School of Julianos to Evermore to ask his sister Sosia about joining our temple.  While we were on the road, a necromancer had ambushed us with his reanimated thrall.  The bastard grabbed our staves from our hands, via telekinesis, while we were distracted.  Knowing that we had low magic reserves, Simine and I used our spells on it and it was still standing.  This was the end for us, or so I thought.

In the distance was this glowing figure, filled with anger.  As it charged into our direction, off the head of the thrall came.  “The bane of your existence has come to expel your soul from Mundus,” yelled this mysterious man.  Many spells were slung right at him; it was astounding how he didn’t seem to phase one bit while draining the necromancer’s magic with his claymore.  Our attacker soon fell to his death and became another soul to fuel this beast’s weapon.

Simine rushed to the man, to which I urged him not to approach.  He thanked our savior and tried to reward him with gold; it surprised me when the gold was refused.  “But how can we repay you if you won’t accept these septims?” Simine asked.  “Directions to Skyrim… tell me now and I won’t kill you two either.”  Fearing for our lives, we told him exactly where to go.  He retrieved our staves and ironically returned them to us with a smile on his face.  I almost thought Simine was going to get us killed when he asked the stranger why he needed to get to Skyrim.  He replied “Only Lady Mara knows why she wants me there; and I apologize for threatening the both of you earlier.  I’ll be on my way now.”  We never saw him again after that brief encounter.

    The Build

Race: Breton.  Despite only receiving one skill boost in our skillset, Bretons have an amazing Magic Resistance to boot.  Also noteworthy is the Dragonskin power, which absorbs 50% of all incoming spells for 60 seconds once a day.  This will be valuable early in the game.

Standing Stone: Lady Stone.  Billy, why choose the Lady Stone instead of the Lord Stone?  The design of this build is to flow seamlessly as possible with minimal hot-keying.  Health Regeneration will keep us from relying heavily on potions or enchantments for that matter.

Stat Distribution: 5 points in Stamina, and All Health.  Although we will be using magic in this build, the cost of the spell we’ll mainly use is below the base magicka we start off with after taking the appropriate spell-casting rank perk.  A few points in stamina will be needed to throw in a couple power attacks that can potentially stagger our target.

Skills: Two-Handed, Conjuration, Light Armor, Enchanting

Shouts: Become Ethereal, Drain Vitality, Slow Time

Black Book Powers: Seeker of Sorcery, Mora’s Agony

Quests: The Sallow Regent, The Hidden Twilight, Unearthed, The Book of Mara, College Quest-line

Staves: Staff of Magnus, Staff of Jyrik Gauldurson

    Skills

The Siphoner is what you get if you combine a Spellsword and a Barbarian!  From the beginning, this play-style is very viable and doesn’t stop kicking ass.  It’s as simple as hotkeying a Conjuration spell from one hand to swapping for that claymore you like chopping heads off with!  By picking a Breton, you start out with a free summoning spell in the form of a Familiar.  Reaching level 50 is a natural breeze, which is essential for the most important spell in our arsenal: the Conjure Seeker!  Finding its correspondent tome appears in all realms of Apocrypha once you reach level 40.

There are two spells that the Seeker can cast, which I haven't seen anybody highlight.  The first one is called Seeker Drain, which absorbs 3 points of all attributes for 10 seconds.  If combined with a fully powered Drain Vitality shout, that's 8 points of all attributes being damaged for 10 seconds.  The other is Knowledge Drain; it damages both Health and Magicka by 40 points and has a hidden perk stagger of 50%.  That’s double the stagger points of a dual-casted Destruction spell with the Impact perk without wasting all your magicka reserves!  It's best to summon the Seeker when you're dealing with a lot of wizards at one time.  I’m not done yet; it even resists Shock spells by 33%!  Electromancers and Storm Atronachs aren't going to take down this behemoth whatsoever, especially when it has 550 Health Points!

Two-Handed is a great skill to use against plebeians like this guy!  “Now TED, why aren’t you using daggers?  They are faster and can be enchanted to deal more magicka damage!”  You shut your whore mouth when TED is pitching a product to you!  Back to seriousness, two-handed weapons deal more damage and have a chance of staggering enemies.  Also, it has two perks in particular that I really like using in conjunction to draining mages.  Sweep will deal the same amount of damage, both physical and magical, to all enemies within reach if you power attack sideways.  The other perk is perhaps my new favorite one: Warmaster.  This gem doesn’t paralyze targets like the description says it does; it knocks down affected targets, 25% of the time, like the Unrelenting Force shout!  A power-attack like this is effective for interrupting an enemy while they are attacking.

For damage mitigation, Light Armor serves this purpose.  It weighs very little compared to Heavy Armor and you can run faster in it too, especially when taking the Unhindered perk.  But wait, there’s more!  Taking the Wind Walker perk increases Stamina regeneration by 50%; take that and add it to the 25% coming from the Lady Stone, you get nearly double the regeneration for no cost!  Did I forget to mention that you consume less stamina when sprinting?  Sometimes warriors will like to pound on you for no reason; by taking the Deft Movement perk, you’re given a 10% chance of avoiding that sucker’s attacks.

Enchanting has multiple purposes for this character build.  Not only are we going to use it to enchant our weapon with Damage Magicka, but we’ll also give it a Fiery Soul Trap enchantment on top of it!  For each empty soul gem you have, it’s going to capture any target you crush with it; I’m not even through yet.  By taking the Soul Siphon perk, you trap 5% of a creature’s soul after killing it!  That’s getting 105% of a soul you’re getting from killing an animal; you won’t get this deal anywhere else!  Before you begin to craft your end-game gear, there’s one product I have complete confidence in: Ahzidal’s gear.  Wear four pieces of it with the Seeker of Sorcery passive and you can enchant stronger weapons as a result!

    Gameplay

This is very straightforward; conjure your Seeker into battle and initiate combat with your claymore.  While dealing with wizards, use two words of Drain Vitality so that it drains their magicka per second.  The higher leveled enemies are prone to being effectively silenced before you chop off their heads!  By using the Become Ethereal shout, you can backwards power-attack to initiate a chance of activating the Warmaster perk without wasting any stamina.  Then you can sprint and activate Great Critical Charge to deal even more damage!

You want to stop an army of bandits right in your tracks?  We got it!  By activating Mora’s Agony, you create a circle of tentacles that deal 30 points of poison damage per second to any enemy that tries to go through it.  Mora’s Agony also staggers anybody who tries to walk into it, which becomes extremely effective when using it in dungeon doorways.  Because two-handed weapons have a longer reach, you can wreck plebeians from a distance without them laying a scratch on your clean fabrics!  You can also use this to set up the Sweep power attack, damaging each one of them into their sternum!  There’s even the option of utilizing a Warmaster power attack in the chance that it knocks down that target.  Then activate Slow Time so that you can focus your efforts on one noob at a time!

But wait, there’s more!  Dragon-slaying gets even easier when you pull out the Staff of Jyrik Gauldurson and Staff of Magnus; while the Staff of Magnus is draining 20 Magicka per second, the Staff of Jyrik Gauldurson is dealing 25 Shock Damage (with a 10 Damage over Time in Shock Damage) and 25-30 Magicka damage (unlike listed description).  Slap that Drain Vitality on there and you got a defenseless wyrm ready to eat lead!  Should your Health get low, conjure a Seeker to distract it; then use Become Ethereal when your Shout Cooldown has completed its course.  After 8 seconds, you will have regenerated 60 HP!  That’s double the HP you’d normally get without any Fortify Health Regeneration!

    Roleplay Notes

There’s several ways you can approach this character in terms of role-playing.  Perhaps you want to play as a Lich Hunter.  After your encounter with Morokei in Labyrinthian, you know that he’s not the only one that needs to be vanquished in order to protect the citizens of Tamriel.  Dragon Priests are the equivalent to this; for each Priest that you kill, trap his soul in a Grand Soul gem.  When you go to the enchanting table, make a custom enchanted weapon with the Turn Undead enchantment and name it after the priest you trapped with that soul gem.  Here are the places in which you can go hunting liches once you feel comfortable enough to approach them: Valthume, Shearpoint, Skuldafn, Ragnvald, Forelhost, High Gate Ruins, Volskygge, Kolbjorn Barrow, White Ridge Barrow, Vahlok’s Tomb, Bloodskal Barrow.

There’s also the aspect of becoming a member of the Dawnguard!  Along your travels, you may come across a vampire that’s trying to drain your health.  After a close encounter, some stranger tries to recruit you as a vampire hunter.  As much as you prefer to be alone, you know it’s a better idea to use all the help you can get.  You could tweak this character to be better suited towards rooting out Vampires by adding Restoration to your skillset.  On top of that, you could switch out the Damage Magicka enchantment with Absorb Magicka to fuel your Sun Spells.  Now that’s a deal you can’t get anywhere else!

Hell, you could even play this character as the Dragonborn; the main quest is very role-play friendly for a character like this.  Enemies you will encounter include the Thalmor, Dragons (obviously), Draugr spellswords, and a Dragon Priest!  But wait there’s more; since you have the Dragonborn DLC, there’s even Miraak to look forward to slaying!  By slaying him, you will have access to all of his gear.  You know that there’s evil lurking in those fabrics; throw his equipment off the top of the tower so that the ocean of Oxiclean, that’s in Apocrypha, can vaporize it completely!

    End-note

Again, I’d like to thank the Skype crew for being the best clients I’ve ever had!  I’m even throwing out a pecial shout-out to my amazing client Ponty for fact-checking the Staff of Jyrik Gauldurson for me!  Be sure to pop a like and comment below if you have questions or just want to say “TED, pitch me more builds!”  Oh, and give me a comment on my profile page on what you’d like for me to do for a GIMP Tutorial.

Great job man! Those tentacled monsters sound badass!  From what I remember they also have a ton of HP thus serving as good distraction if you're ever in need of regenerating your health. Have you tried to use Force Without Effort? It should improve your health regen when in Ethereal (due to a bug) and will allow you to stagger enemies for longer

Thank you good sir.  I never post builds unless I have 100% confidence in them; quite frankly, I'm very confident in everything I do!  Also, the last one with my face on it is a screenshot I got from Dragon.  Many thanks to her too!

I was going to do that for this build, but I realized I have a lot of HP and Health regen. to the point where I'm just as good without it.  Nonetheless, thanks for the like!

I've expanded a little more about the Conjure Seeker in that section.  Originally, I wanted to make a separate section for the Seeker.  By talking about it there, I thought it would be redundant to say the same things that I mentioned there.

I can't say I've seen them fly slower with a Seeker out.  When I played Cryomancers, I have seen them fly slower.  While my previous build did use some exploits, I'm trying to transition out of exploiting faulty game mechanics.  It's a nice idea, but I doubt I'll add it in here.

You probably had a different experience than I had when it came to trolls.  The Seeker Drain spell that they cast seemed to have no effect on the high Health Regeneration that trolls have.  It might be a different story if I used Alchemy and Drain Vitality.  Thanks for the feedback!

In a way, the Siphoner is so different from what I would expect from a follower of Lady Mara that I was kind of hoping to get a little more about his connection to her, but you leave that up to your reader... which I get (it heightens the mystery and mystique of this character). This sounds like a kick in the pants to play: I love builds that move counter to expectations... a spell sword that doesn't put ANY points into magicka? Awesome! Not even any magicka boosting gear? Awesome. Also the roleplay aspect of hunting down dragon priests and using their souls to create weapons that turn their own kind? Awesome. NAMING the weapon after the very dragon priests you have vanquished? Crazy-awesome! It IS another amazing build... nicely done, sir :D BTW--I love that Dragon has BILLY MAYS in front of a stall in Riften's marketplace... it's a clever touch.

I think that The Fire Within has the same effect -- and actually, I think simply not meditating on a word of power does it too. I'm not positive on this, but I believe that Become Ethereal automatically comes with the flag that Eternal Spirit is supposed to activate. As a result, Eternal Spirit actually deactivates that effect. That was the gist of Phil's tests from last year at least.
