4E 201 Last Seed – I live in a little house called Breezehome in Whiterun and I work on a farm owned by the Battleborns. In a time like this, I can´t help but awe at the Companions and their brave work. They fight for honour by helping people in need and by settling disputes. They do many great things for so far I have seen and heard, but I think Skyrim is in need of greater help; Skyrim needs a hero. Even the Companions can’t fight off the dark forces gathering around us.

As a Nord citizen I am confronted with the decay of Skyrim every single day. Since the defeat of the High King by Ulfric Stormcloak, my homeland is on the verge of civil war and roads have become much more dangerous to travel. The number of bandit hideouts exploded in the last few months and people have seen necromancers raising the dead in graveyards, barrows and caves. Skyrim is turning to chaos and the Empire isn’t able to do a thing as they have the Aldmeri Dominion dictating every move they make. The Thalmor aren’t interested in Skyrim’s troubles, as dictators and tyrants they arrest, imprison, torture and kill the so called “Followers of Talos”. No, the Thalmor see Skyrim’s troubles as an opportunity to tighten their grip on the power the Empire once had.

In the last couple of weeks the amount of injured people seeking refuge in Whiterun had increased. A lovely young woman was attacked and raped by bandits near the Embershard Mine. Two Dunmer Pilgrims were attacked by Falmer near Shimmermist Caves and Riverwood had and still has problems with bandits situated in and around Bleakfalls Barrow. With all these things I have the feeling things are escalating. But not until yesterday, something snapped inside me.

Yesterday we had planted the last wheat seeds of the year and as every year, we got the next day off. I walked around town breathing in the fresh autumn air of Last Seed and I stared at the misty Throat of the World. If there was one thing I wanted to do before my death, the thing on top of the list would be to do a pilgrimage to High Hrothgar I thought to myself. I walked down the stairs to the silent marketplace where I saw Isolda. I greeted and asked her about her Kajiit friends when I suddenly smelled fire. I looked to the west, where the wind came from, where I saw a cloud, black as night. It looked like the fire was at Fort Greymoor. “Probably bandits again having a bonfire or something”, Ysolda said to me.

A few hours later guards walked through the gate. A man and woman were brought to the temple of Kynareth. “They were injured as a result of a bandit raid on their farm near Fort Greymoor”, I heard a guard saying to the guard captain. “The bandits stole their food supplies and killed their only child who defended the supplies”. I had a feeling if someone had gripped my throat and squeezed it. I hurried to the temple of Kynareth to find out how the man and woman were doing.

“The man is lightly injured and should be okay” the priest of Kynareth said. “But I don’t think his wife won’t make it. She has been stabbed in her stomach with a Red Mountain Flower poison. I fear the man will not be able to recover mentally from this tragedy. Losing wife and child with such a thing is unbearable. It is sad to see this sort of things happen more often. Since The death of the High King, the number of injured I have treated are more than those I have treated for the past 10 years. The people are nowhere safe anymore. Nature is feeling it, I tell you. The Gildergreen has started to die.”

I was sitting in the sun on my doorstep watching Adrianne crafting a magnificent steel greatsword, when other Hold guards arrived at the gate. They had recovered the body of the little boy that was killed during the bandit raid. As the city guards slowly opened the gates, the young child’s body was solemnly carried in. Everyone was silent, even the birds stopped singing and the wind stopped blowing. The whole city was invaded by the sound of death.

The boy’s face was chalk white and his limp arms and legs were bruised and cut. The guard carrying the body held the boy’s head respectfully against his armoured body. Just as I was to avert my eyes out of disgust, I saw the guard nearly trip, because a skittish rat from the sewers ran between his legs. Trying to recover his balance, the boy’s lifeless head rolled out of his arms showing the worst injury of all: his throat was slit from side to side, like a slaughtered animal. Without the guard’s partner, who helped him taking over the body, the head would have surely come off.

Something snapped inside of me, when I saw the dead eyes of the child. The eyes were full with fear and agony. They looked at me in such a way; they penetrated my very, already fragile, soul. I couldn’t help but look away, before the guards were out of sight, taking the stairs upward to the priest of Arkay, who was waiting for them on the top. I heard Carlotta crying and Ysolda trying to comfort her. I knew why Carlotta was so sad, she had to go outside of town everyday to buy fruit and vegetables. She also had the chance of being attacked and leaving her daughter behind.

“How much of these tragedies must have happened in the last months” I furiously asked myself, while getting inside my warm and cosy house. I suddenly felt week and before I knew it, I threw over in the first pot I could find.

“Weak son of a whore you are” I sneered against myself. Today a man lost his woman and child and I am here throwing up!”

I grabbed a bottle of ale and threw it against the far wall above the dinner table, next to the closet. The bottle exploded in foam and pieces of glass, sparkling in the light of the fire to eventually fall on the dark cold floor.

“This has to stop! If the Empire doesn’t and can’t do anything, I’ll do it myself. Justice has to be served!”

Skipping two stairs I ran upstairs and I grabbed my sword that was lying on my chest. I stepped on my bed to remove the shield from the wall, as well as one of the two greatswords I used as decoration.

“I hope you are still sharp” I said to the sword while touching the dusty blade. “I am going to change the world on my own!”

I cut my hand with the sword and I let my drop spill on the ground.

“I will bring justice to the ones who are destroying my beloved homeland! Nothing and no one will stop me, not even Death himself!”

Unamoured I put the swords on my back and grabbed the shield. I slowly walked downstairs to the door and once outside I breathed in the fresh air of autumn, now tainted with the smell of death. Walking to the gate I knew very well this could be my last day on this world, or the beginning of my legend. Fort Greymoor would be my first target to avenge my people!”

    1. The Build

Honour, valor, justice and revenge are the words I used to build this character. Emotionally torn apart after the tragedy in Whiterun, our hero chooses to take justice in his/her own hands. I wanted to make a build where emotion played a role. I wanted to make the daily tragedies of war real with this build as war is not something heroic. Killing people to protect other people is a disgusting thing that sometimes has to be done and is always difficult to do, even if the people you kill deserve nothing more than death (not experience, just an opinion). As a result, this build heavily depends on role-play and the ability to generate those feeling yourself. I present to you, The Scarred Hero!

    Race: Nord

The patriotic feelings toward Skyrim makes the choice of the race a no brainer. The Nords are fierce fighters and bound to honour. Justice and revenge are the perfect motives for a Nord to fight for his beloved homeland. The other reason I chose the Nords is that they are known as a sturdy race who do not show their emotions easily. This build should change that.

Standing Stone: The Warrior -> The Steed

The Scarred Hero is a true full blooded warrior, so no magic or what so ever. The Warrior Stone makes easily levelling, once level 30 you could concentrate on getting the Steed Stone for extra manoeuvrability.

    Health/Stamina/Magic: 2/3/0

This build is a heavy stamina consuming build, whether it is used for blocking, bashing or power attacks. The Scarred Hero fights with diverse stances, and as a full blooded warrior, stamina is the most important thing to stat in the first 20-ish levels. After a base of 250 – 300 stamina, everything may be put into health.

    2. Skillset

As I said earlier, this build uses every skill that is available in the Warrior tree. As a warrior class it is pretty generic, but the role play should be the difference.

    Major:

One Handed: Used as the weapon with your shield stance. The sword is the weapon of choice as it is light and quick.

Two Handed: Used as your “crowd control weapon” the greatsword is both quick and damaging. With the perks 'Sweep' and 'Great Critical Charge' this weapon can be a beast.

Block: The life saving skill of our Nordic hero. Concentrating on the right side of the tree, the shield has the potential of being a magnificent weapon, able to disarm and damage opponents.

    Minor:

Heavy Armor: Although the Nords specialize in the barbaric light armor, the Scarred Hero prefers heavy armor as his/her protection. Not only does it offer armor rating, in combination with the Steed Stone the heavy armor is besides good looking also superior to light armor.

Archery: Nords prefer hand to hand combat, but they can’t deny the positives of having a bow on your back. Being able to damage your opponents before being engaged in hand to hand combat certainly comes in handy.

Smithing: Every Nord smiths his own weapons and armor. They only use their creations or the creations of the most accomplished smiths to fight their foes.

    Perksheet level 30:

    3. Equipment

The Scarred Hero uses the Nordic Carved Armor. It looks awesome and it is protective. The elven armors will never be used by the Nords and the dragon armor is just too heavy (remember, The Scarred Hero is not a trained fighter). As weapons our hero uses the Nordic carved versions of the sword, greatsword and shield. As for magical gear, when you find it, you may use it. Enchanting and other forms of magic are not used by the Nords. With the things our hero saw and heard it is only logical he/she distrust magic.

    4. Roleplaying

The tragedy of Fort Greymoor haunts you every night, especially the eyes of the dead child. For the first 15 to 20 levels, avoid getting the “well rested” bonus (as a substitution for sleep use ‘wait’ when you have rented a bed). This will represent the nightmares you have. Who of you ever woke up well rested after a nightmare? The Scarred Hero has a trauma he/she slowly has to process.

Until level 15, when you are confronted with choices between life and death of an enemy, choose death. You are guided by revenge; everyone who takes part in the decay of Skyrim will have to pay the price with death. You accept bounties as your primary source of income and you help people in the city/town you arrive as an honourbound Nord, helping people to make life a little bit easier. Following the background story you first go the Fort Greymoor to serve justice. It can be difficult to clear out the fort; the bandit outlaw lurking inside can certainly be a problem on low level and higher difficulties. When you have cleared out the fort you return to Whiterun to sell the loot, receive the blessing of Kynareth and you accept every miscellaneous quest you can find. When confronted with a choice (“In my time for need”) the choice is all yours, but think as a struggeling person, haunted by confrontations with the war.

As for quests, I recommend doing the whole story line of the Companions (yes, our hero becomes a werewolf), Dawnguard, Dragonborn and the Skyrim story line. Daedra quests can be done, if you think the Scarred Hero ignores his disgust to magic and allow the Daedra to give him the powers he needs to fight evil. Another interesting questline to do is the Dark Brotherhood, although you are not a stealthy character the Dark Brotherhood certainly eliminates people who are a danger to Skyrim. The only question you have to ask is: does it really help Skyrim to murder the Emperor? As for the civil war, you choose the side of the Stormcloaks, they are the only ones willing to fight against the Aldmeri Dominion, although you don’t agree with their xenophobic ideas.

    5. Combat

As an all-round warrior you have different stances to choose from when you fight your enemies. After all, you are inexperienced and you have to adapt to the enemy’s weaknesses:

Glory of the Companions: Werewolf form

You never thought the Companions were actually werewolves, but upon discovery of the Beastblood, you recognized its power and you didn’t hesitate to consume the Blood. Also, the mortal enemies of the vampires are werewolves and what is better than go vampire hunting as a werewolf? The only downside is you are not fully able to control it, as you feast on your enemies when you have defeated them. Later on this will change.

Bane of the Barrows: One handed sword + torch

As you don’t use magic, the only elemental damage you can inflict comes from your shouts and a torch. Fire is effective on every kind of undead, so when you are clearing out graveyards, vampire hives and barrows, this is the weapon combination to go. A nice plus is that you never fight in poor lighting conditions.

    Valor of the Nords: Greatsword

Although the blocking capabilities of your greatsword are inferior to the shield, it more than makes up this problem with the ability to hit multiple enemies in one large sweep and a devastating charge. When the enemy is shattered, your great charge easily devastates the already shattered enemy. When in group combat your great sweeps will make sure multiple enemies go down at once.

Honour of the Dragons: One handed sword + shield

You use this stand when defence is more important than offense. How strong an enemy may be, when your defence is strong and your attacks are quicker, the enemy doesn’t stand a chance. Your shield represents the scales of the dragon as the sword represents the teeth. It all comes to having the longest breath (literally) during the duel.

The bow doesn’t have a stance as it is merely a simple means to be able to attack enemies on unreachable places. The Scarred Hero is thereby not an expert in archery and he/she focusses more on melee combat.

    6. Special Attacks

Wolf of the North: You temporarily disable your enemies by freezing them with your voice. Within this short time gap you transform into your Beastform and ask the help of one of the Companions to serve justice in the name of Skyrim.

Ice form + Beastform + Totem of the Moon

Dragon Charge: You charge at your enemies with the ferocity of the Dragon. Thanks to the Dragonblood your battlecry itself transforms into a wall of wind, an icy storm or an inferno.

Battlecry + Unrelenting Force + Great Critical Charge

Battlecry + Fire Breath + Great Critical Charge

Battlecry + Ice Breath + Great Critical Charge

Bane of the Undead: The undead are vulnerable to fire and you know how to exploit it. Combining your fiery breath with your “Bane of the Barrows” stance, you stack burning damage to quickly dispatch undead.

    Fire Breath + Torch Bash

In Name of Justice: In battle your adrenaline fuelled body allows an above human level of reflexes. When an enemy strikes you evade it and you launch a barrage of strikes in his/her back.

    Quick Reflexes + Elemental Fury

The Scarred Warrior: Eventually your exploits are known throughout Skyrim and your enemies are aware of them. They already tremble when you stand in front of them.

    Disarm + Battlecry

    7. Mod recommendations

I want to recommend some mods for this build. It helps with immersion and it makes the combat a lot more diverse and fun.

    Alternate Start:

This mod alters the starting sequence of Skyrim. Instead of being transported to Helgen to be executed you start your character creation in a cell (how original) with a statue of Mara. At the statue you can choose from a ton of beginnings to give your character just that special feeling (completely voiced). I recommend starting this build by owning Breezehome.

    Heavy Armory:

This mod adds a lot more weapon variations to Skyrim. Spears and halberds are just a few of them. It is completely compatible with Dragonborn and Dawnguard and gives your character a lot more tools to play with.

    Dance of Death:

Do you think your character needs to grow in combat? This mod enables you to disable the more “advanced” killmoves by giving them perk (combination) requirements. This mod also alters the frequency of kill moves and a few other settings. With this mod, your character becomes more bad-ass as the perks in the One Handed and Two Handed Tree grows. Requires SkyUI 3.0+ and SKSE

    Throwing Weapons:

I always wondered why I couldn’t throw my knife or axe at my enemies if they wanted to run away or I just wanted to ambush them. This mod gives you throwing knives, throwing axes, javelins and more to give you more options in combat.

I hope you enjoyed the build just as much as I enjoyed writing it. Thank you for reading!

This is quite good. Maybe change the name from "scarred Hero" to Scarred Hero. Just a thought. It's quite solid. Nice job.

    Great build again. +1!

I also love the backstory. The best I've seen here on this site I think.

The Scarred Warrior special move is so simple, but one of the best melee combat moves I have seen used in a build (sorry if someone else has used it). Great job on the build, love the detail and layout. Thank you for sharing an awesome build and you made sure to go all out with posting! +1

I really like it, solid presentation and nice connection to a backstory! +1

I also really like your special moves, they are nice combinations of simple yet effective moves, just how I always imagined special moves must be! The only thing I disagree is Deep Wounds and Bladesman perks. The added critical damage is just a base damage of your sword/greatsword. The Deep Wounds is still more useful than Bladesman because of higher base damage of two-handed swords but it's still a very small damage. I would've put those perks in Armsman and Barbarian correspondingly (or if you don't want high level skill perks - Deflect Arrows and Savage Strike).

Thank you! I understand what you're talking about and I will take a look at it tomorrow. In experience I always thought the first perk in Deep Wounds was useless. That 10% critical hit chance is way too unreliable to call it a base.damage increase. But I chose it because the following ranks definitely make a difference in damage output. And the perk can be a lifesaver if you powercrit against a boss type opponent. Again this is just me. I chose it because once you have the sweeping perk and 30% critical hit, this really adds to your damage output. The 1h sword however is a different story, I think I will change the critical hit perk to champion stance and then critical charge as the Bane of the Barrows stance is a pretty mobile and fast fighting stance. I think the 1H tree is a little underpowered now.

Thank you! I hope the likes keep coming, the Valenwood Ranger does really good too, just a few more likes there and it can be promoted to Cat. 40
