    The Warlock - Dark Summoner

    About the Build

As a lvl 40 build, this set up delves into the Dark Summoner archetype, differentiating itself from the typical mage or conjurer class. To those who wish to walk down this dark path, I give you the master of Daedra, the summoner of spirits and the keeper of the Oblivion.... The Warlock.

The Warlock goes on the offensive through the usage of destructive Damage Over time based Chaos Spells, Demonic Summons, Drains and Reality altering spells.

He drains the life force and energy of his enemies, as he uses his own to fuel some of his spells... As a master of Demons, he is able to draw on them from the realm of oblivion, capable of holding his own through most fights through chaos & blood magic with hell spawns of his own.

    Lore

As an senior adept from the college of whispers, The Warlock has always far excelled his peers and seniors in the art of conjuration & desired more mastery over the creatures that inhabit within the planes of Oblivion.

However, the college's education could only provide so much... the knowledge of powerful spells died with the magus of the tamriel's Mage's guild....at least until he began to receive vision from a mysterious reptilian skinned horned Demon calling himself Molag'Bal, promising power of the ancient mages and beyond for a simple ritual involving a sacrifice.

Having performed  the profane act and entering the pact with the Demon, Molag'bal's frequent visions guided The Warlock on to Skyrim,  giving instruction on locating places of power through the College of Winterhold  and his very own children born from the "Daughters of Cold Harbour"

However, as he approached Skyrim, it would seem that the journey would end much sooner than expected as he had been mistakenly captured in an ambush by the imperial soldiers and led to the chopping block...until his acquaintance with the world eater himself.

Escaping through sheer luck and circumstance, he and a handful of others proceeded on to freedom and Skyrim, where he located the college of Winterhold and furthered his studies, eventually becoming it's Archmage thorugh an unfortunate series of incidents that led to the demise of the previous Archmage, Savos Aren

Although owing no Allegiance in the civil war (with his only allegiance to the Volkihar clan of Vampires for their veneration of Molag'Bal and for the kinship of what they are), The Warlock has ever since garbed himself in the Thalmor Regalia to avoid being detection of his past identity in general.

    Perks:

    Major Skills: Destruction, Alteration, Conjuration

DestructionWall of Frost/Shock/Fire & Ignite (DB)
These spells forms the core damage of the warlock's offensive

    Alteration: Ebonyflesh, Paralyze
Whilst Ebonyflesh saves your cloth covered ass, Paralyze is usually used as an opener for most of the offensive and helps keep targets down.

    Conjuration: Conjure Dremora Lord
A very important component of this build, the spells used in this tree focus on the summoning branch, eventually reaching dremora lords.

    Minor Skills: Enchanting & Restoration

Restoration: Poison Rune (DB), Close Wound
With Dragonborn DLC, Poison spells have been added this tree, making it a much desired spell to utilize. Close Wounds is used in the spell life tap and Necromage increases overall values of spell damage and enchants.

EnchantingCost reduction & Resist Fire / Shock

Ahh, Enchanting. My Favourite profession skill. Used to reduce magicka cost on your own clothes and enchant normal items to sell it to vendors for high prices!

On a separate note, having enchanted everything that you need to, it is advisable to refund your points by making this tree legendary (available only with DB) and slot those perk points into other areas, once you have the necessary gear enchanted.

    Gear

The choice of robes and enchants contribute a great deal to the build by reducing your dependence on the skill "Life Tap" but not making it obsolete altogether.

Needless to say, robes are essential due to the Mage Armor Perks. Dual Ring Staking is achieved via the uncursed ring of hircine glitch.

    Roleplay and Stats

When Role-Playing The Warlock, it is advisable  to go ahead with the following set up:

    • Race: Breton (preferably the evil looking sort) for their racial abilities and overall RP.
    • Stone: Leveling: Mage Stone / End Game: Lord's Stone
    • Shout: Offense: Drain Vitality / Defense: Become Ethereal
    • Stats: 5 Magicka / 5 Health / 0 Stamina for every 10 levels
    • RP Quests (Recommended): House of Horrors, College of Winterhold Questline, Civil War Questline till Season Unending, Dawnguard (Volkihar) Questline
    • Main Quest lines (Optional): Main Questline,  Dragonborn Questline

Whilst the lore should provide sufficient backstory for this build, the following may help greatly with what i consider with the immersion of the RP of this character as The Warlock - Dark Summoner:

    • Complete all Recommended quests – They form the experience of the warlock... submit to Molag Bal and spread terror...
    • Revenge - My cuppa tea – Politically Maneuver to maintain a neutral stance, sowing seeds of discord on either side during negotiations. Ensure Elenwyn stays. Don't worry, you'll send your minions and followers on both sides soon enough to ensure a blood bath.
    • Rarely Travel – Your premise is within the college. Until the civil war is over, you're in hiding and rarely travel. Travel only when you need to trade and switch to fine clothing when trading (preferably with it's own set of enchants)
    • Owe No Allegiance: Aside from being the Archmage of the college of winterhold (really, you didn’t have any choice on that one..), Do not become the head of any other guild nor thane of any hold. These "Jarls" and they're lackeys will soon suffer your wrath.

    Combat Spells

Chaos Affliction -  Corrupt  Elemental magicks ravage your target

Paralyze + Wall of Flames + Wall of Frost + Wall of Lightning + Poison Rune + Ignite

Drain Soul - Drains the Life, Magicka and Stamina of your enemies

Drain Vitality Shout + Soul Trap +  Vampiric Drain (Stage 4) + Staff of Magnus

Oblivion Binding - Summon Demons and Spirits from Oblivion:

Twin Souls Perk + Summon: Flame Antronach + Summon: Dremora Lord

Life Tap - Empower your dark magic with blood

    Equilibrium + Close Wounds

    Defense Spells

Unending Resolve -  Oblivion based Fel energy shields you from Damage whilst giving some back

Lightning cloak + Ebony Flesh (Dual cast) + Mage Armor Perk (3/3)

    Followers

For followers, during early - Mid game, I would recommend using a housecarl (probably lydia). With some of the best tanking abilities and a decent HP, she can carry you till mid game without risk to injury. Just don't accidentally kill her.

However, once you've gained proficiency in the dark arts, gain a rhythm as to when summoning needs to occur and when you can solo. This rhythm will dictate your gameplay, as you rarely will have mobs attacking you.

i love this. a lot of warlock builds are see are basically battemages. but this is how i always saw: a mage who relies on summons and dots or direct dmg. prolly from all the wow i played. ill hve to try this soon. but 1 question: why no augmented perks in destruction?

    Hi Ironfatman,

Thanks for taking an interest in this build. The reason why i stayed away from augmented perks is cause Wall spells and cloak spells are not affected by those perks.

Since the core spells of this build is a lot more DOT focused, it helped me save points as, allowing them to be spent in other critical areas. Hope this answers your questions...

    Thanks.

Actually I'm pretty sure cloak and wall spells ARE affected by augmentation perks but are not displayed properly. My only complaint is the size of texts in the pictures and using the same exact picture for perks and equipment. Other than that it's really good, +1 like.

Interesting, this reminds me a lot of playing a Warlock on WoW. Because of that, I see warlocks more as a pure mage class than a that of a battlemage. I'll definitely consider giving this one a shot when I eventually purchase Dawnguard.

You get a like from me for this awesome build.

    Hey Guys,

So, based off the the information I had received for both on the official wiki, it would seem that both Cloak and Wall Spells don't seem to be affected by Augmented Perks:

    http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Flame_Cloak

    http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Wall_of_Flames

Now, if you guys can help me out by actually testing this in game or direct me to some site that has actually done these tests and verified by the community, I would happily modify my build to make it a level 44 (with perks in Augmented Flame and Shock).

    Thanks :)

    Hi Ben,

As always, thanks for the help on the builds and feedback. I'm sure with the support of this community, i can continue to dish out builds that would be enjoyable to play. Now to address your points:

Perk & gear Pics and Font: Fixed - Refer to updated page

Shouts: True, Marked for death may be the best DOT in game, but I go with drain vitality for 2 reasons:

    1. It causes a stagger effect which is more useful for my non VL form attacks
    2. It is more of a drain of all resources and not just health

Since i had my Warlock from WoW and Conditionmancer from guild wars 2 in mind when I made this build, I chose the this should as it drains Mana (Magicka) and Life at the same time. The drain on Stamina is an added bonus actually, which is welcomed.

Section for shouts: Updated in spells section for Offense and Defense + reference under build section.

    Thanks.

    Hi Mason,

Ah, thanks for the redirect on this. I will be updating this page with the added content.... however, the page doesnt say anything about walls... would you happen to know if these perks affect wall spells by any chance?

Also, i will be releasing video on my builds soon :)
