Character Building in Fallout:76

  • November 1, 2018

As you both mentioned, 50 is the last level you receive S.P.E.C.I.A.L. points, though you do continue gaining perk cards.  Golden Fool made a good point regarding the possibility of higher level-locked perk cards.  That might prove to be an interesting game mechanic (and a reason to keep playing your character), should they utilize it.

Urgh...to be honest the level-locked Perks were the thing I hated most about Fallout 4. I mean, I understand it but for me it felt restrictive as all hell. Logically it shouldn't be that different from Skyrim's system of Skill-Level restrictions, but I think there's a major difference between being told that "Your Character isn't Skilled Enough" and "Your Character's Level is Too Low". Not sure if that makes sense, but couldn't stand it in Fallout 4 and would hate to see it in Fallout: 76 to any major degree.

Well, I missed the first beta test entirely due to the bug, I guess.  I never clicked anything on the launcher (as it was running in the background all day), but when I saw it at 5:58 pm (CST), it was "Unlocking" the files.  Unfortunately, that seemed to be another name for "downloading" everything again.  When Bethesda throttled down the download speed of everyone, my night was over.  Thankfully, the launcher was finished yesterday morning and Fallout 76 is now installed (and running, minus the server being online) on my PC.  I hope to give it a good testing tonight.  I might rush through areas just to grasp the mechanics without detailed examination of the lore.  I say that, as I will likely reroll my character on 14 Nov.  It just depends on what I see when I start 'er up this afternoon.'

Fair enough, I say you should just have as much fun as possible with this first one and then delve into the grittier stuff as the game gets older. Personally I'm planning on having two-three characters if I can (if I can't...well then fuck). Actually I haven't read much about whether they'll give you character slots, because I'd love to have an RP/Lore focused character, a Party Character and then a Solo Character so I can have fun in different ways...Eh won't make much of a difference I suppose, but I definitely think running multiple characters will be fairly easy in 76.

PS:  I plan on going heavy Int and Cha early just to see if that harms my ability to fight enemies.  I want the Lone Wanderer and Animal Friends perks, as well as the ability to craft higher quality weapons, armor, and explosives.

Yeah, from what I can tell it probably shouldn't. Especially if you pick up Lone Wanderer which will probably be fairly broken if the previous installment of it says anything. Good luck regardless mate, I hope it all goes well for you and Bethesda doesn't somehow shove an even more game-breaking bug your way :D

I believe you can, I think MATN mentions it in is first video from the event-thing.

That sounds like a challenge :P'

I wish. Seen a few people shoot at it and it seems like it's tough enough so shrug off your baby bullets. But if it is possible then I am going to create the most badass Level 5 Hunting Party of all time and (probably) glitch the shit out of that fight to win :P

Oh good, actually might have to look up a few of his videos from that...Can't remember who's early stuff I watched but I've only watched MATN's latter stuff for the game so.

Right so I've been really torn on deciding on what I want to play as. Originally (as most of you might know) I wasn't planning on playing until December or May so I really didn't want to make a decision this early, but that's changed so I've been debating a bit.

Melee seems really quite fun this time around, so I was thinking of going for an Intelligence/Endurance/Strength focused build that picks up a lot of Healing, Melee and Tanking skills to sort of aim for Power Armour. Hopefully that'll net me a lot of the crafting skills making it viable once I get myself a suit that I can just go sprinting around and smashing people apart with some Blunt Weapons.

The other option, is focusing on Concentrated Fire which seems bloody overpowered in Fallout: 76, especially since it's available so early. Everyone I've been watching has talked about it to some extent, and I mean constantly adding to your Accuracy and Damage in V.A.T.S is really quite something, so that feels like a fun build. I love playing Sniper/Rifle users, so...yeah it might be a nice pick, especially with how common Hunting Rifles are early game (Super Mutants seem to carry them by the dozen).

So yeah, one of the two, not sure if it'll be a build or anything but I think I'll be going for making some early Level 15/25 builds rather than starting off with 25/50 or anything. It just lets me run some more ideas quicker, and I'd really love to get a few builds going to test how traditional they'll be.

Yeah a lot of big questions still to answer. I do think it will be interesting to see how we make 'builds' with this style of game. I think it's possible, just different. And I think it'll take a bit of time to figure out.

I've been quite actively avoiding everything even though I pro-ordered. Looking forward to first impressions on the 15th!

True, I think I remember Fallout 4 being a bit of a slow start because we just weren't initially sure how Fallout Building should work. Fallout: 76 is a hell of a lot more confusing to figure out without playing it, so...yeah it'll be a fair bit of fun to test out early on.

I hate you both because now I'm going to HAVE to slay a Scorchbeast solo level 1 with an unmodded rolling pin and a clown suit.

About the character building, I guess it will be more about playing through the game, seeing what you like, and using it on your character; of course there will be things that everyone will probably use (Hacker and Locksmith come to mind), so I'm guessing I'll start with Perception and Intelligence and go where it feels right from there.

Eh, Unarmed is the way to go :P Definitely have to agree with the Clown Suit, that's the only outfit suited for a warrior such as yourself :P

Ooooh, great point (sorta). I mean I definitely think Hacker and Locksmith are going to be major ones, maybe a few others as well (Healing boosters) but for me I'm eager to see the balance between Power-Gaming and Roleplaying. Because, if we're being honest, this game is slightly more suited to Power Gaming/Gameplay focused builds but there are a lot of RP Builds that might not take those common perks.

It's probably going to happen later on though, at the start I assume we'll all be pretty focused on the Gameplay Elements with a few basic RP points at most just so we can explore everything, but who knows... Hmm now I'm kind of eager to see what building will be like in late 2019/early 2020. Could be fascinating.
