Fallout 76 - Gameplay so Far

  • October 9, 2018

So I've been researching some of the now fully displayed Gameplay for Fallout 76 (speficially this video by Mr MattyPlays and a few others that I won't link) and I have to say that so far I've been... I suppose pleasently surprised for the most part at how well Bethesda has managed to pull the actual Gameplay off so far.

Now I'm still not personally up to date, kinda fell off about a month or two ago and just haven't properly kept up. But so far I've been rather impressed with some of the issues that I thought the game might have. One of my biggest potential worries that are specifically addressed (to an extent) in the video up there, were the Reapir System and Perk Cards. With the former, I was hoping that it would be nothing like Fallout 3's uh...yeah, that. With the latter I think there was just so much that could go wrong, and still could (I haven't seen the full system and I'm not sure how I feel about the 'loot-boxy' nature of it so far), but so far at least feels like it's going to work relatively well, especially with what he says about the Charisma Perk-Card sharing system.

Anyway, I wanted to start this discussion while I head out and read/watch more about the gameplay shown off for Fallout: 76 and just get people's opinions on it so far. Is there anything that still worries you, or now worries you about the gameplay? IS there something that hasn't been addressed in what you've seen so far that worries you? Has there been anything you've seen that's gotten you a bit more fired up about the game?

I've watched Many A True Nerd's video and from what I've seen in his video and on his twitter, I'm now more excited for the game since it looks to be everything I enjoy about Fallout 4 just with other players. The Way MATN describes the "lack" of npcs is "they're dead but not dead" which while I wasn't worried about this aspect of the game I do find very interesting.

The card packs will be fine on 1 condition; you can't buy them, if that is the case then I have no problems with them. It's only when you can pay for loot boxes that I object. So far I believe they've said that microtransactions are cosmetic only so hopefully that is true and they stay away from the whole gambling side of things.

Hmm, I have seen two videos that show a lot of stuff, courtesy of Many A True Nerd, here and here. The first one is mostly just random footage from the game in general; the second one, however, is a pretty good analysis of the game's new mechanics, but they all seem to be very similar to Fallout 4's, except for two points of focus:

-VATS now doesn't affect time at all, meaning my prediction that Agility would be mainly for movement speed, reload speed and such has been debunked. Also, in that analysis I said that there would be no sneaking since players could see you regardless, but it does make sense that there are enemies who CAN see you. Whoops.

-Intelligence now doesn't affect EXP gain, but it does affect repairing and scrapping, so that prediction WAS correct.

Apart from that, there are some other important changes; food and water meters seem to be permanently stuck in there, along with illnesses and mutations for contracting too much radiation. This would mean a Survival system akin to the one in New Vegas, with the beneficial types of mutations making keeping your RAD levels high as useful as it was back then with the Rad Child perk.

And that's all my analysis for the moment I guess.

And there's a bit more to throw on top of the stuff from Fallout 4 that I enjoyed. But yeah, definitely has excited me/

Fair point, I'm just not sure if I like the implementation, but then I didn't see enough of it. I mean, as a quick example, I'm just not sure if it'd take me out of the game a little bit (and thus would it be better if you just found Card Packs in chests or something) Not sure, because for every possible 'this'd be better' I can counter it as well. So I guess I'm just not too thrilled about it, but can't find a better implementation.

I'll have to watch these then. From what I have gathered, yeah it's pretty damn close to Fallout 4 which isn't a bad thing, despite a few problems I had with it, I thought the Gameplay was pretty damn great for the most part.

To expand on my comment about the "lack" of npcs. My favourite part of New Vegas is Lonesome Road; Paws has had to listen to me talk about it before. A section of the game with only 1 npc, I love the atmosphere and the exploration of it. So as long as this game has those then I'm fine.

I've never managed to get around to any of the DLC for New Vegas...actually now that I think about it I think I've really only played a few of them with Nuka World being the largest...Oh I suppose there is the one for Fallout 3 that basically just extends the Main Quest, I've finished that one obviously, but for the most part I've never managed to play for long enough to complete it all.

Anyway, I get the general idea, and while it isn't the best example I did always find Fallout 4 more enjoyable when I'd just roam around and occasionally stumble into people rather than playing it as someone who's really Quest-Driven and focused on the main population centres. As long as the world is built up enough that you feel like you have plenty to explore, it'll all be good as far as I'm concerned.

I have to say that one particular issue I've noticed so far is that there seem to be a lot of lag/latency issues with the game...Now to be fair from what I understand most of the Gameplay we have now is based off about 3 hours in a fairly intensive test by Bethesda, with the additional issue of it being an older version of the game (two-three weeks old) but I think it really hit on my fears about how intensive the game is going to be.

Mr Matty Plays, hit a really good point in this video... But imagine how shit it's going to be for PS4 players? We all know that the game is going to run worse on PS4, and if people are having issues on Xbox...well you get the point, not going to be great.

I know MATN mentioned that the game would stutter in weird places; when nothing was really going on, but he didn't mention anything else of the sort. I'm hoping it was because they were running it at "4K" and that the lower resolution that the PS4 will be running at will help with that. But then I'll be on pc so with the ability to adjust graphical settings this is less of a problem :D
