KOTOR: Apeiron - New Content?

  • January 16, 2019
Yeah sorry Chris, I've heard about it a few months ago and sadly it seems like there isn't much they can do. Disney/Star Wars seems to be really aiming to stop things like this (Star Wars Theory on YouTube made an unmonotized fan-film recently that was claimed by Disney...very strange IMO)

I mean, at least LucasFilm stepped up in Star Wars Theories' defense. Episode 2 is on the way, and Disney allowed for a fan game, 1313, to be made, so long as they don't use actual characters

I feel sorry for that guy but Disney DOES own the ip. In Disney's place, I'd do the exact same thing since at the end of the day, people are paying star wars theory real money on patreon because he made the fan film even if the video is not monetized for him. The guy is making a living based on George Lucas and Disney's continued work. Star wars is not his idea.

Yeah, but at least we're getting the 1313 fan game :)

Yeah, I wouldn't hold my breath on that. It's been almost 8 years since skyrim's release and there's still no Skywind or Skyblivion whereas Beyond Skyrim are continuing to start work on multiple projects while having only one released mod to date.

Urgh...man I'm a bit torn on this. So yeah, Disney does own Star Wars and they have the right to do it, to be honest...I'm not fully sure if I would do the same if it were my content (not as a blanket statement, I'd be fine with some things but not others so...I guess I'm in the middle there) but really I do get it and would say that Disney isn't being a dick about this. But then, I'm still also kind of hung up on how George Lucas used to be so incredibly chill with people creating more Star Wars content that he had nothing to do with. Most of the expanded universe can be roughly summarized as Fan-Content made official and I really love that it was how it was handled then.

Actually, that kind of has always bothered me a bit. I'm understanding of companies shutting down things like Aperion, Vader, some of the larger TES mods, etc. But at the same time...it kind of always baffles me that they don't really seem to communicate with the creators and discuss the idea of it being turned into official content. I mean, if I'm being honest I'd throw down $40 for Aperion in a heartbeat if Disney decided to back the creators and sell it as an official game (hell I could probably be convinced to shell out $60 or $80 for the game), and we've seen it be mildly succesful with AoE 2, Baldur's Gate (and the rest of the Beamdog games) all being relatively succesful remakes. But the amount of effort put into Baldur's Gate: EE and KoTOR Aperion seem massive, and I'd love to just see a company (that has the money) to just say fuck it and pay these modders to create an official piece of work. So many of them are huge fans and would do the game/mod/remake justice and...well to be blunt you probably wouldn't have to pay them as much as a regular team.

I dunno, obviously there are arguments against that, but I'd love to see it with a company some day. I dunno, just think it'd be awesome and would be fairly beneficial (and imagine the PR boost they'd get...absolutely massive compared to the minor blows they recieve everytime they shut something down).

The problem is that Disney would have to enforce strict rules and timelines on the content creators (just like in the case of an official game/movie). Money and resource investment comes with expectations and deadlines. And I can easily see why modders would not agree to all this since they're doing it all in their spare time. And if disney would give up on all these required terms, they risk ending up with a hot mess of of an end product with their brand slapped on it. And when the internet riots because of the product not meeting its high expectations, who is going to come under heavy fire? Certainly not the modders who to a lot of people are more or less unknown. No, it will the the most public party involved in the project, disney.

But, however, the devs behind Apeiron are working on an adventure/mystery game, from what one of them told me, The Missing, as it will be titled, is likea hybrid of True Detective and The Council. Also, some fans have gotten the go ahead to make 1313
