General Builds Discussion

  • July 21, 2015

This is a discussion for people to discuss build ideas and generally talk in more depth about what builds they're playing at the moment. The kind of things to discuss here would be backstory ideas, roleplay ideas, any interesting exploits or just general information about the technical side of the build.

Think of it as an expansion of the Incoming Builds discussion in a way.

I would like to continue on our discussion about Witcher 3 Signs build, DB. Yesterday, I got to level 20, and while I am playing on second hardest difficulty (my first playthrough) I have to admit, game feels uber easy right now.

My Sign Intesity is on 170%. Advanced Quen is just awesome for healing.

Also, I would like to speak about Igni. I went through lot of forums and people say, that Firestream is a must, but I don´t understand why. With my Sign Intensity, my simple Igni ignites enemies everytime I use it. Whole crowds of enemies start waving their hands around on fire. Amazing crowd control, and that dot is dealing lot´s of damage.

Than Yrden. You know it is possible to use simple Yrden and Advanced at the same time? First, you have to cast the simple one, slow enemies coming at you, meantime casting the Advanced. Then all you have to do is keep enemies in Yrden´s circle and range with Igni and they pretty much won´t be able to hit you.

    Sign Skills Spread

Pretty much my setup on level 20 right now.

The Firestream does the same damage as the base Igni from what I remember but applies the damage more then once. It's kind of like Quen, the advanced form can do everything that the base form can except has the addition of being able to withstand multiple hits (and the Health Regain). Igni is a powerful Sign but when you evolve it not only does it give you control over the sign, deal more damage/stamina and once you unlock the ability to cast it for %50 less Stamina it becomes quite deadly. It's just personal preference I guess. Spread vs Spray.

I think I'll be sticking with Potions over Quen just to make it more difficult. Later on if you invest in Alchemy you can get some crazy buffs from having High Toxicity (my character already can hit 136 I think rather then the base 100, and that could boosted more). Quen is ridiculously great but honestly it made the last fight way to easy (hell any Boss Fight is just...easy with Advanced Quen). I think potions (especially later on when I get the more powerful versions) will be just as useful but a little fairer.

I honestly haven't touched Yrden outside of needing it to deal with some Wraiths, I might mess around with if for my Bomber Character I'm planning. Anyway that Double Glyph thing does seem pretty useful, being able to damage enemies, slow them and stop projectiles is just way too wicked.

My current plan is to rely on Igni as much as possible and then go offensive by dropping in on Aard (which later on I feel will be ridiculous) and also possibly Axii, the idea of turning enemies against each other and making them more powerful is pretty interesting. Picking up Aard Sweep at the third level seems to good to pass up (essentially turns it into a shockwave around the user and at 3/3 is just as powerful as regular Aard, same as Axii once you pick up Domination 3/3)

Anyway, Signs are just really fun to mess around with, combining it with Mutagens and Potions (Swallow springs to mind especially) should make this a fun and powerful character.

Oh and by the way I found a pretty useful seeming website (I only glanced through it) This place has a lot of useful information on the game and is presented well, which is always a big plus for me.

Axii is really powerful, I was using it a loot at the beginning. The Advanced One I mean. Only downside of it is that it requires time to cast it, so it is really hard to cast it in the middle of combat.

Also, it can turn any fight into piece of cake. If you cast from a range where you can target enemy but they still aren´t attacking you, you can make them kill each other. In combat, it is best combined with Yrden.

Also, I noticed that with the first rank of Yrden, you can cast two simple Yrdens (two circles next to each other) but I doubt it has to do anything else with the Advanced Yrden.

I think that Advanced Quen can make any fight too easy.

I´m really considering respecing to hybrid builds. Swordsman/Signs. I´ll save this Sign build for Deathmarch I suppose.

Swordsman is a fairly easy playthrough, when combined with Signs (Advanced Quen especially). That was my first playthrough where I just made my Fast Attacks ridiculously powerful. I remember fighting the Boss at the end (I won't spoil it if you haven't reached that yet) but he was easy as all hell with simply Advanced Quen and Fast Attacks...Everything was to be fair.

I'm unsure about whether I'm going to play a Heavily Armored Bomber or test out some kind of Clothed (as in just Cloths...) Archer...

I´m level 20 and still hasn´t layed a foot on Skellige... Just finished Novigrad main quest.

I get the feeling that Signs build is pretty much the most versatile build there is.

I really can´t imagine Archer build. So far, I found crossbow useful only for killing drowners under water and shooting down Gryffins. Same for bombs. I use them so rarely.

I even use potions so rarely that I find them almost useless. I usually drink few when I´m fighting "Red" enemies (those with higher level than mine.)

I think an Archer is possible, and I think clothing counts as Light Armour but I'm not entirely sure. That might make it worthwhile because getting Critical Hits is ridiculously easy with a Crossbow. You won't do much damage early on but you can stagger enemies so much easier. It would be a very tactical playthrough but it might be fun.

Bombs can be very useful in some situations but you need to get the right ones. I managed to come across Grapeshot, Dragon's Dream and Dancing Star (I think) Bombs early on so I have a lot of power in mine. I also have a bunch of Potions and Mutagen Potion Recipes (Only two that I have the actual Mutagens for.) so for me they are quite useful, simply because they help me in any situation.

But damn, not even on Skellige, I can't remember exactly what level I was when I finished but I'm pretty sure it was around 28, maybe.  You must be taking it a lot slower then I did. Skellige is massive I must warn you, and there is a lot of Ocean to navigate which makes it a pain in the ass.

EDIT: I was just toying around and I think Bombs and Alchemy would be an amazing character. Remember that Green Mutagens give you extra Health so something like This would just be really powerful. Time Slowed by 45%, Bomb Capacity increased to 7, each of those bombs would cluster into 6 pieces (which I think all do the same damage, etc.) Synergy (Mutagen Bonuses are %50 higher) would make your Vitality Massive. Too powerful...

Clothing is considered light armor. Every piece of clothing has 1 armor rating.

Yeah, I´m playing really slowly. Doing mostly side quests and Witcher Contracts. If I have low level for some, I go exploring the world. If I encounter a place where is high leveled enemy, I write a note on paper so I will remember to return there later.

Fair enough, I'm playing through this one slower...much slower. Visiting every Place of Power and exploring as much as possible.  I think I'm going to respec this ASAP (in other words just finish I think one or two quests) so that I can turn it into a Bomber/Alchemist.

Jeez. I need to finish one of my builds off soon. I have a Force Unleashed Build nearly finished but not quite, I have a couple of Neverwinter Nights builds that I just need to write up (but I'm not sure how many people have played that game...all of you should though). I could also finish playing my Kingdoms of Amalur and Witcher 3 Builds but those could take a couple of weeks...

Ah well, expect A build soon, not sure which one yet but one will be posted by Monday.
