Obsidian is in it for the long game

So what this means is: we don't have the money to do what we want to. But if this works and is a financial success, this is what we want to do.

Should The Outer Worlds be the financial hit I hope it is, Obsidian is clearly looking into directly competing with Bethesda: open-world RPGs, third and first person modes, full mod support. What's different is that Obsidian actually cares about the "R" in "RPGs". Such an original comment.

Gosh, I hope this works out. One thing that has made Bethesda complacent is the complete lack of direct competition. Competition is always a good thing.

Interesting, I like that they're blunt and honest about it. I really do hope that The Outer Worlds turns into the next Skyrim and completely shatters everything about the current RPG market, the place needs a real shake-up considering there are very few "True RPG's" being released by companies these days. Very eager to see what happens here.

What would happen to the site if The Outer Worlds is the next Skyrim? Would we make the site be about both Bethesda RPGs and Obsidian games?

Since the site was originally focused only on Skyrim (RIP theskyrimblog.ning) and we made the transition to socialengine to include Fallout and change the name to TamrielVault, would the site evolve again to include these Obsidian games as a focus?

If we include too many games, the site will just be a generic RPG forum! What makes this site unique anymore?

We do have a group for RPGs, it would go in there

Tamriel Vault World? Anyone? No? That is a god awful name lol. But I think the site can still respect it's origins whilst exploring new games. The Outerworlds game has devs that worked on FONV, and the original FO games. So it won't be such a drastic departure from what we're used to seeing. And who knows we might even get Starfield next year. And Skyrims not going anywhere any time soon, Es6 is at least a few years off yet.

That would be awesome, but I don't think they have the money to turn The Outer Worlds into the next Skyrim. I think that it could be Obsidian's The Witcher 2, so to speak. Big but not huge, but big enough to allow a Witcher 3 to follow.

@Dwight So, that's actually a fascinating question, and one that I think is worthy of discussion. I do think its unlikely but it'd be bloody awesome. First of all, we've got the problem of selling it.

At the moment we've created multiple groups to serve roles for non Skyrim games and only Fallout CB has really done that well, and to be honest its still rather small compared to Skyrim CB. Starring with the most similar, we ran Mass Effect and Dark Souls groups in the past (these are about as old as I am in relation to the site) and they really never took off properly. You had the odd strong discussion, and a few members who posted a fair bit in the ME group, but they never lasted too long.

Arguably the most successful group other than FCB to cater for another game was General Gaming/The RPG Group, and all that's required to understand it I'd looking at it today. It worked well for a fair while and maybe if its original host didn't need to leave (asshole that he was) it might have worked out but it really only ever attracted a small audience Basically, I think the game has potential and I'd 1000% love to be wrong and for the game to explode on our site, but its just not logical.

Edit: Fuck that's what I get for not reading the full comment. Sorry mate, uh I wouldn't worry about that, I just meant that the game could be massive enough to this cal the popularity of Skyrim, doubt its ever be more than a side in the RPG group.

I think I slipped into the slippery slope fallacy on my last comment. I totally forgot about the Dark Souls group. I can see how it would be a hard sell to get the site to massively support a new game. Based off of pure speculation, however, I'd assume that The Outer World is more accessible than Dark Souls, at least for people who mainly play Skyrim and Fallout.

It will be interesting to see if the site rallies behind The Outer World.

It really was quite forgettable to be honest, I mean I missed the chunk of the early days where Dark Souls content was being posted (and wasn't into the game at all back then so I wouldn't have cared) but I think it had some great potential if we only could get some great, deep Lore conversations happening. Sure Gameplay is great and all, but I think Dark Souls Lore could've been the main selling point.

Ah, but you've got a good point, The Outer World/s (?) is definitely a game that I think could be more accessible, it's definitely more similar to Fallout, and maybe Skyrim than any of the other games we've focused on in the past. So yeah, it's not impossible and if there seems to be enough interest I wouldn't say it's impossible to get a unique group for it. Just, the level of interest would have to be pretty big to justify it and we see pretty consistantly that it's hard to get new games going here.
