Being a noob, on my first playthrough I didn't touch alchemy until I was a good way through the game - definitely after I reached Skelligr. Man was I missing out. Potions make things 10x easier, almost too easy a lot of the time, and after figuring out potions were good I tracked down the most advanced recipes I could, and with the excess of ingredients I had collected I started chugging potions at every possible opportunity. Never used bombs though, apart from destroying nests, I've never been a fan of gunpowder type things in fantasy games as a whole.

To be honest, I 100% cheesed my way through my first playthrough, never using Oils, Bombs (except the most basic) or even any Potions other than Thunderbolt, Swallow and I think one other...healer-y sorta thing. I essentially just threw up Quen Shields, maximised my Fast Attacks and...oh and abused the shit out of my Stamina Regen + Igni to do damage. It kinda worked, but by the end of the game I could kind of just bunker down and dodge anything without needing to bother with all the (cooler) more complicated elements of the game.

I admit that I'm having a lot more fun this time around with the heavy-potion use, I haven't really gotten into it yet, but I love the idea of collecting ingredients and recipes and playing strategically (though it is making me wish the Beastiary was done differently, you know, rather than 'beat monster ---> Learn Weaknesses ---> Profit).

I think you can sometimes learn about a monster through reading books and stuff too, no?

I haven't played Witcher 3 yet, but I have played Witcher 1 until act 3. I'll probably go through the whole series as I did on my first playthrough: with a nearly pure melee oriented build with a minor focus on alchemy and Aard.

There is that, but it's (logically) a bit limited by the fact that, you know, most of the time your in the middle of the swamp talking to farmers and stuff...not a lot of reading. To be fair, I think it was just that one mission for some reason, did a similar one with a Cocatrice and managed to get it's information through the quest so...yeah really not sure why the Werewolf one was different.

POTENTIAL SPOILERS NOW - AND GONNA ADD THAT TO THE TITLE...JUST IN CASE

I'm up to the meat of Velen now, as in I'm meeting the Bloody Baron for the first time, I'd kind of forgotten how well designed and voice-acted and everything he is. Like, he's just a solid character who's kind of hilarious, definitely the best character in the early game with some of the best scenes (minus...hmm probably the whole Bathing Scene back in...place with a name I definitely rememer). Urgh, just kinda glad that its been long enough that I no longer remember the entire game, because I am 90% sure that the Baron gets worse later on, but for now I'm just happy to see a well written character.

Oh and I totally forgot how enjoyable it is to beat the crap out of people with your fists, the brawling quest (and Gwent of course...love that shit) is just a hell of a lot of fun, even if it's kinda easy and enemies are incredibly predictable...Either way, fun times and that's all I want.

I'm the opposite, haven't really played Witcher 1 or 2 yet, mostly because I tried it once and my Laptop nearly blew up...decided that it might be better to wait :P

Henry Cavill has been cast as Geralt for Netflix's The Witcher. I'm happy, he's a big nerd, into gaming and stuff. He apparently has played Witcher 3 multiple times.

Ah, I keep forgetting to react to this news. I'm actually kind of excited for that, to be fair I'm not a huge fan of the guy (very neutral) but I watched Immortals recently, and thought he fit pretty well into that sort of 'Magical-Historical' sort of movie, a character that was fantastical but still grounded (which is very much what Geralt is) and after that I was much more intrigued at the idea of him playing Geralt.

I'm interested in seeing where they go with the series though, there are just so many ways they can go with it (Base it off the Books, the Games, something rather new) and I would have no idea if they really followed the books or first two games. But it'll be really interesting to see how much they bring Magic (outside of what Witchers can do) into the story, how well they showcase the action/mystery/detective aspects of the world...I can see them going too far in any of those directions, but...yeah just so fascinated in finding out more about the series.
