You can hear a heavy sigh, and after a few moments of static sound, a high-pitched yet stable voice in a heavy southern accent manages to cut through the static and find its way to your ears. The recording quality is irregular.

So the Shaky Town shook.” A lifeless laugh breaks through the recording, but it is quickly silenced by static. Or maybe the source of the laugh was depleted of whatever joy its own joke might have brought it. “Jesus, I can’t believe I’m cracking jokes right now... I’m sorry about that, to whoever finds this…were just outside. I can’t believe…. happened. The damn reds finally did it. They bombed our country. Or at least… Angeles, but the Rubber’s radio is silent, no matter what station I try to tune in. They’re all dead…lent."

After what feels like too long of static silence, you consider turning the holotape off, but the resurgence of that same weary voice stops you. “I’m sorry for my joke, to whoever finds this. I hope you didn’t lose someone back in Los… I’m leaving this tape behind so that you know you’re… alone. I repeat, you’re not alone. If you wish to find us, we’re keeping… interstate 15 and heading to a small town in the Mojave, Goodsprings. Big Ben said… family there."

“This is Rufus Duck… of our lil’ convoy. God help us all…”

So this was originally the base of what I once thought would become a blog in the Story Corner. Who knows, I might actually get around to doing it, I really like my characters (only two of them are featured/mentioned here), I love the inspiration for them and I loved digging into some stuff to write this little thing out.

By the way, this was inspired by a song. Can you guess which one? Also, while I was writing this, I realized that I ended up building a loose reference to a certain Fallout: New Vegas minor character.

Nice hints there Edd. I like the formatting of it and the static really sets it into a mood. Good job!

Thanks, I had a lot of fun writing this, thinking it through and looking at some maps. Had to make it short though! The only problem I had was that I couldn't find a good picture of Interstate 15 at the Nevada/California frontier, the good ones that I did find I couldn't tell whether or not they were in the Los Angeles/Las Vegas way.
