"This is the way the world ends.

Not with a bang, but with a whimper."

    - T.S. Elliot

    BACKSTORY:

"Don't be afraid, little Artyom. Be brave." said my mother after I learned that my father died while protecting our station from the mutants. He was one of the bravest and kindest people I knew. I turned eight years old that day and lost the second most important person in my life. I was broken. For days at a time, I refused to leave my room and spend time with other children. It all changed three years later, when my father's brother came back after five years spent on the other side of the Subway. He took me to the surface for the first time and showed me the world above. He gave me a purpose to get my thoughts together and take care of my station. He trained me in combat, tracking, hunting, stealth and survival. I grew stronger. Soon enough, I was exploring new tunnels, scouting the surface world and taking regular trips to other stations. But, in the end, fate had other plans for us. The number of Metros started to fall like never before and soon enough, we were going extinct. Our station is one of few that still exist. We retreated from the surface world to save ourselves. We are at war now, with the mutants which hold us under siege. We fight every day, struggling to survive another day. One day, we will have to leave the tunnels behind us and start our new lives on the surface or die."

"That is one hell of a story, Artyom." said one of the guards sitting with him.

The other was standing with his rifle on his back. "Do you really think we will have to leave the Subway, Artyom?" he asked.

"Look around you, the station." said Artyom. "What other choice do we have."

Suddenly, they heard a noise in the tunnels. "Ferals." said one of the guards. Artyom stood up and loaded his shotgun. He aimed at the darkness of the tunnel ahead. He put his finger on the trigger as the Ferals came into view. "I am not afraid, mother."

THis is cool. I loved that game. Didn't play much of it, but loved the atmosphere. I don't play it because I want a better video card for it, but the story seemed super compelling.

Metro!! :D Damn, do I love playing those games. So immersive and scary. Tbh honest, I prefer Metro over Fallout. The former seems to capture the nuclear post-apoc setting very clearly.

I gave up on Metro around 5 hours in, and this is making me wish I didn't! The atmosphere alone that this profile creates is excellent, and its such a great idea, combining the two worlds, that this is going to be awesome no matter what. Artyom never really appealed to me though, dunno why, but I'm guessing his character opens up more as the game progresses?

I waited for a new graphics card as well. Bigger settings make a much better and immersive look and feel.

I know, right? The small details on the surface which you see much less then the tunnels are amazing and the darkness of the subway system really make it stand out over other post apocalyptic games.

Shouldn't have gave up, Zonn. The story and character are good but it's the atmosphere of the game that is the main focus and the best part in my case.
