Alright ladies and gentleman of the wasteland. I have recently purchased Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas and have begun learning and experiencing these very great games. However I have found support for the older titles a little lacking and thought I might create a thread compiling any questions I or others might have and just share tips and experiences with those like me starting out in the Capital Wasteland and the Mojave. Hopefully there will be lots of good content below over time that others can pull up as they too start their own adventures.

Alright I'll start with my first two questions.

FO3: Is it me or does character building seem more bland and less specific than later titles? I felt that I could do pretty much anything with little emphasis on pros and cons of my character. Does anyone have any character building tips for me as I will likely start a new character now that I kinda know what I am doing and have done the main story once.

FNV: Any suggestions for companions for this game? I have Boone and ED-E so far and they seem quite powerful and useful. I know of two others Veronica and Cass but don't have them yet. Thanks all!

    1) FO3 does lack any character building really, except if you want to max out all skills or gain a crap ton of EXP. I would advise that a Guns build is better than an EW build though.

    2) It really depends on your character. ED-E and Boone are the best ones. Veronica has a great story but is super melee oriented, Cass has a decent story and is a sharpshooter, Lilly is okay and the only thing good from her is her perk, Rex is Dogmeat, Raul is okay, and Arcade is good because you get Enclave Power Armor.

    1) I went for a big guns build for my first character but one didn't get a gatling laser till really late. Also I found that ammo was so far for everything! I was buying all sorts of ammo non stop for a longtime and just using what I had till it was empty. Felt like playing survival mode or something but on normal. Will defiantly factor all this in on character number two.

    2) Interesting! I will have to try pretty much everyone out as I can. It's hard to track progress with affinity gains but I know what to expect for Boone and Veronica from Oxhorns videos. I like Cass, will prob try her second or third.

    1) Yeah Big Guns isn't the greatest build for FO3, and Guns/Melee builds is kind of the go to, if that helps. Also, fun tip the Winterized Power Armor is the best one because it has like 10,000 health or whatever.

    2) You are welcome, and I never play with Companions, but I like Boone's, Cass', and Veronica's Story.

    3) I am glad to find another Oxhorn watcher :)

    1) Yeah I did the Operation Anchorage stuff and got that armor and was amazed how much better it was and how it never seemed to loose any durability when all my other stuff was like tissue paper. Sadly I thought the armor really didn't look good because T-51 is probubly my least favorite power armor model and I thought the other armors like the Tesla and Hellfire sets were pretty sweet. Is there any real reason not to go power armor though? I didn't feel like armor was doing much for me besides pure damage mitigation. Likely would make a difference if I was stealthing a lot for stuff like the Chinese Stealth Armor but for just regular wandering seems power armor or bust.

    Also yay Oxhorn!

    1) Telsa and Hellfire are my favorites of all time, too bad Bethesda didn't include them in Fallout 4 or even the Enclave. Honestly, there is no real reason to use Power Armor except for the fact that it provides extra DT and the Winterized one is pretty much invincible. I have done several playthroughs without ever using Power Armor.

What kinds of armor do you find work well for you and why?

I pretty much use whatever I can find at first, the Armored Vault Suit you get from that girl in Megaton isn't bad, but then I use either the Chiense Stealth Suit or Combat Armor, depending on my charcater. Combat Armor because it can be repaired with the different variations of it and it is better in terms of DT and the Sealth suit because stealth.

Do you find stealth to be very powerful in FO3? I didn't in my first playthrough but that was likely due to poor equipment choices. It just seemed like things saw me a lot and I also found the close confines of much of the locations being interiors, underground, etc. to really inhibit anything like a sniper build. Perhaps a stealth melee build?
