WiP Character Build: Hrormir

  • October 6, 2017

After a fascinating discussion with Phil (Paws) on the recently I've decided to start a rather interesting build that has me more hooked than just about any idea I've come up with recently (and I've had like 12 of those). Basically, Phil and I had a deeper than expected discussion based on the Song of Hrormir, which as a brief summary involves a bloke called Hrormir who goes off to fight some Dark Kings (three of them), because his best mate has become an evil servant of theirs, fights his best mate and then bangs Nocturnal as an old lady. There's some other stuff in there too, but I hit all the important notes really.

Anyway, it's the final bit that this build is based off. Well not really the banging her (probably a mod for it but not on Xbox :P) but the idea of Nocturnal and the Old Woman, and the Three Stages of the Divine Feminine. And I'll break that down later. For now, just know that this is a kickass build with a badass Magician, Lore stuff and some little elements of what is kinda just Phil and I having a relatively random chat that involves the words "sagging breasts' about one more time than usual.

    Hrormir and The Divine Feminine

    Race: Nord

    Hrormir
    Son of Hrorgar
Summoned to the Court of Vjindak,
Son of Vjinmore, King of Evensnow.
          "Mighty caster of magic,
I charge thee to go to Aelfendor,
For its hoary Warriors do threaten my Land
And bring forth their cousin Demons
    To terrify my People."

Nord's bring a lot of benefits to the role of Hrormir, from both a Roleplaying perspective, a Thematic perspective and of course, a Gameplay perspective which (for me) can be very rare to find all in one Race for a build. To me the names here, Hrormir, Vjinmore, Vjindak, Hrorgar, they all scream Nordic to me, each of them has little things that just feel incredibly Nordic, mostly the Vjin part of the names. The thematic aspects come through with Evensnow, Hrormir's Icestaff (Frost Magic in general) and in my opinion, the wording feels more like a Nordic Poem rather than something from an Imperial or Breton which would come off as 'more refined'.

The gameplay elements are rather interesting with Imperious - Races of Skyrim. Primarily because the idea of the race is that they get stronger the less health they have, ultimitely resulting in a 40% boost to weapon and elemental damage. They are primed for pure, offensive output and that is very much the feeling that Hrormir brings to me. He goes toe-to-toe with a mighty Warrior, empowered by Nocturnal and is equally matched in close combat, and that's the feeling I want to impart.

Standing Stone: Undecided (Mage, Lady and Lover are my three main thoughts)

Stats: 1 Magicka and 1 Health.

Skills: Destruction (FROST), Illusion, Alteration and Conjuration

There, Torch in Hand, didst Hrormir
    Pass through haunted Countryside
    And frightened Villages,
    And through the black Gates
Of the blacker Castle of Aelfendor.

    But Hrormir was battle ready,
And in the echoing Halls of Night
    The Blade of Darfang
    And the Staff of Hrormir
Didst strike again and yet again.
    Mighty Warriors and Mages both,
    The boon Companions now Foes,
    Shook Mundus with their War.

I'm currently debating Alteration, but Destruction and Illusion will be critical for this character. Hrormir's Icestaff is a weapon that imbues Frost, Light and Charmeleon on his enemies, you get some interesting duality with  Light and Charmeleon which both fit in Oblivion's school of Illusion but even if I don't go Alteration, Magelight is relatively cheap and comes at no great cost to this character (but there are some awesome perks with Ordinator that are tempting me.)

    Random Notes:

All of the quotes are going to be done up in fancy images and shifted around a fair bit, I might end up leaving the starting point as a very quick introduction and then expanding on later sections with the quotes.

That's really all I've got at the moment, but there will be some more writing to come as I play more, and of course delve into the Roleplay of the character and start working out some of the Lore stuff.

o- Removed Conjuration, added Enchanting (for staff reasons).

o- Rewrote Race section to focus on the Nords, and explain why it's the most fitting Race.

o- Removed Enchanting after reading the perks and finding out that most are only beneficial for a Gandal (Sword and Staff) build.

o- Added Conjuration because of Pact Magic (Destruction spells and effects are 10% more effective for each friendly conjured Daedra within 30 feet.) and the decision to take Bound Weapon perks and use the Bound Sword which has the chance to reduce Magic Resistance by 60% at 90 Conjuration.

o - Removed Block and debating Speech for the Earthquake Drum perks (in other words, adding in some very thematic background music :P)

Nice! I gave the "Song of Hrormir" a read like two days ago and it is inspiring to make a build around this character!

Edit: Damn Hrormir is a true bro he took a nasty one for the team at the end :D

Found this btw to get you in the mood: Click Here

A chat with Phil always yields such things. :D Interesting to see what you do with this, Deebs.

    Phil's gonna be pleased.

Paws: 'You had me at sagging breasts'

Pretty good impression, this one thinks?

Dunno what your talking about their Phil, impression of what :P

Obviously, I'm going to have to make some edits to that, grab a border, change the lighting but I think it might be compulsory for me to try and fit it in somewhere, even if it's just as a link somewhere :D I'd kind of made my mind up by the time I got to the fight between Hrormir and Darfang, just the image of this badass mage smacking around a Warrior with his staff is just too awesome (plus you get so many little bits of fun between that I had to make the build). But yeah, good stuff.

True that, if I'm ever looking for an idea on what to do, Phil's my go-to guy, always got some fun Lore stuff to talk about. Not entirely sure where it's going to go yet either so I'm interested in what I'll do with it as well :D

Thanks for the comments Liss, Wulf, Duvain.

Hmm, having some trouble deciding between the Standing Stones for this build (note: I'm running this with Aurora - Standing Stones of Skyrim). The Atronach is arguably the best gameplay choice because it will increase the power of the character while also kind of making it a bit more interesting to play. But I can see more, Roleplay/Thematic reasons in either the Lady or Lover Stone.

Other than that, going to need to wait a few days to play, got busy, busy schoolwork (and I'm finishing it up by the 10th so that's gonna be fucking sweet), just one last essay and I'm off for a couple months :D

On those standing stones, I wonder if you could have fun playing with yet more thematics. There seems to be a bit of a threesome going on between Nocturnal, Darfang, and Hrormir. Darfang "took the quest and failed" and fell to the dark. When those two boon companions duel, they are described as "mighty warriors and mages both." The number three also has significance in the quantity of dark kings they are sent to thwart.

The whole Song is like a giant declaration of love for the number 3 ain't it. You've got the kinds, the goddesses involved, even the 'normal' named characters number in threes (Hrormir, King whatitsface and Darfang). My original thought was to actually delve into using three different standing stones that represent one of my sets of three (Dibella, Mara, Kyne or ____, Meridia, Nocturnal) that I'll eventually delve into, but I dunno.

I mean, the idea of a progression with the character is important to me. I dunno, if I go into it enough I can kind of create like 12 different thematic combinations. You know, Dibella/Nocturnal and represent the Lover. Kyne, Mara, Meridia and ____ all represent the Lady. Dibella and _____ represent a bit more of what I'm going for with Youth. Or, you've also got Kyne and Meridia representing the Warrior, Nocturnal representing the Thief and Mara and Dibella representing the Mage. If I'm going thematic, I want the progression to very nearly be Dibella/___, Mara/Meridia and finally Kyne/Nocturnal.

Maybe I've just got to figure out who Blank is, I think for some reason I was leaning towards Mephala? No...Or maybe I can just scrap it and stick with Dibella and Mara with Nocturnal...though really Mara isn't represented much in the Song of Hrormir (or at all) so arguably it makes the most sense to go Dibella with Kyne/Nocturnal.

Urgh, lots of thematic-y stuff I'm trying to think of while still being Gameplay friendly. I'm kinda turned away from the Lady because it's thing is summoning a lame Spirit Cat that's kinda mediocre but it's kind of a requirement for any thematic purposes.

But yeah, there will, eventually be three Standing Stones and I think I'll go RP over Gameplay :D

    Pretty Nice!

I liked the main idea, so I am going to start a "Hrormir" build too.

I will post anything helpful  I found out during my gameplay.

I wish this makes a really good build

Thanks for dropping by hadisehat. I'd be very interested in how you'd tackle a bit based on Hrormir, because he really is a rather interesting character. Are you going with a similar set of skills or adding your own things (also interested in whether your doing it Vanilla or Modded). Definitely, let me know how your gameplay is going hadisehat, love to see it :D

I like the look of that mod, DB. Hell yeah, back to passive and active like Oblivion! Specifically, I like the Lady powers. Did I mention that the Reachmen of the upper Karth valley are keen on the Nightfall Sabre Cat and train them as mounts, swear that they are sacred to the Daedric Prince Nocturnal? :D Cats and Nocturnal make a ton of sense when you think about it.
