Greetings, Classics players! This is the first in what will hopefully be a series of short “Profiles” for all the more important NPCs in the Classics games, to help players get a better understanding on who they’re dealing with. Be warned, though, that these may contain spoilers to the game in question, though I will attempt to keep them to a minimum. Now to get things rolling, we’ll kick off with someone who should be easily recognized by Morrowind players...

    Caius Cosades

    In all his shirtless glory!

Every Morrowind player (Or at least, everyone who’s started the Main Quest) should immediately know who Caius is. For those who don’t though, Caius is the Grand Spymaster for the Blades in Morrowind, though most of the time he seems to be living the life of a Skooma addict in his Balmora house.

One of his many benefits is how knowledgeable he is about Morrowind, having multiple topics for conversation ranging from places, guilds, and even some of the other notable NPCs in the game, and thus newer players may find it in their interest to speak with him to get a better understanding on all the going-ons in the game. Another plus is that he’s also a high-level trainer for Unarmoured, Speechcraft, and Hand-to-Hand combat, which may be of use to those who prefer more Monk-like playstyles (Which happens to be his own Class in-game).

As mentioned above, Caius is quite heavily involved in the Main Questline before he up and leaves for Cyrodiil, being the quest giver for most of the earlier quests. Notably, he helps with understanding the Nerevarine Prophecies and your role to play, as well as pointing you to other members of the Blades who can help with training.

Tips for getting the most from Caius

Once he leaves for the Imperial City, his house (as well as all it’s contents) gets passed on to you, allowing you to take all items without fear of turning him hostile. A bonus piece of advice, for those who want to sell his Moon Sugar, is that the local trader in Balmora, Ra’Virr, will buy it from you, allowing it to be sold rather easily.

Another tip, aimed mostly for newer players, is that, provided you're under level 4 when you first ask him for “orders”, you’ll get an additional 200 gold from Caius for "a decent weapon, armour, or a spell". Couple this with the 80 or so from your release fee, and you should have a decent amount to spend on starting equipment.

And finally, for those who prefer to fight either unarmed or unarmoured, it may be useful to purchase as much training possible from him before he leaves; Not only is he one of the highest-level trainers in those Skills (Behind only the elusive master trainers), but they also tend be be more difficult to use than most other Skills, meaning more training will always be helpful.

Well then, that’s about it for this week’s featured NPC. As always, if you have any suggestions, either for improving this, or for future NPC Profiles, then be sure to reply in the comments below!

I wasn't under the impression that he was posing as a Skooma Addict, I always thought he was well and truly addicted to the stuff. Hence the skooma pipe hidden underneath his bed.

And one of the patrons at the South Wall Corner Club mentions it. Ask Chrirranirr about Caius and she says '"The old greyhair gobbles sugar like scuttle. Chirranirr is surprised he still walks. But it doesn't affect him. That is the mark of a long-time user." (I'll admit I did look this up on UESP, even I don't remember all the details!)

Great idea for a series BTW **thumbs up**

    Glad you like it, Paul!

Hmm, could've sworn I read somewhere that it was a ruse. Upon a quick look in the CS though, it seem's you're right. I'll give that line a quick change. Thanks for pointing it out!
