Atop a small wooden box and fastened to it with thin leather strips running lengthwise and crosswise sits a bulky letter comprised of several pages of parchment. The letter is sealed with pale wax seemingly from a plain beeswax candle rather than the bolder colored sealing wax favored by businesses, noble houses and Jarls' courts. Stamped precisely in the center of the blob of wax is a stylized letter D lacking the surrounding ornate embellishment so commonly found on similar signets.

The letter is addressed thusly in a flowing, feminine hand:

    Jeanne Dubois, Master of Enchanting
    Daggerfall Castle
    Court Mage
    Daggerfall, High Rock

    Estelle Dubois
    Vlindrel Hall
    Markarth, Skyrim

    24th of First Seed, 4E 202

    Dearest Mother,

It has been quite some time since I’ve written to you and Father but with the ongoing happenings here in Skyrim it’s been difficult to find the means to convey a letter much less a parcel. As I stated in my last letter, there are rumors of Civil War with the upstart Stormcloaks rebelling against Imperial rule. Though there have been small skirmishes here and there, no large scale battles have taken place. Hostile attitudes are increasing so I fear it’s only a matter of time before outright war breaks out. Of even greater concern is the continued presence of the dragons I told you about. Dragons of all types attack hapless travelers on the road, citizens in small towns and can even be seen mounting their fiery or frosty magical attacks outside of walled cities! I’m doing what I can to thwart these dragons and, by the grace of Kynareth, will eventually prevail.

Needless to say, as a result of such occurrences I haven’t been able to find a Courier willing to make the trip across the border. However during a recent trip to my property in Riften I was fortunate enough to befriend a Khajiit warrior guarding the trade caravan camped outside the city. Upon successfully retrieving an heirloom amulet for him, he desired to do a favor for me in return. After some discussion, Kharjo agreed to use his connections to the numerous Khajiit caravans until he found one willing to carry this package and attached letter to you in High Rock.

Inside the box you will find encased in its protective packet of wisp wrappings a perfectly preserved specimen of the Blue Butterfly found here in Skyrim. Accompanying the packet is a detailed sketch of the Blue Butterfly. Though such a specimen would normally be of interest to an alchemist rather than an enchanter such as yourself, it’s the unique alchemical properties of this specimen (which I will detail further in this letter) that should prove of interest to you. No doubt the specimen and accompanying documentation will make a fine addition to the reference section on enchanting in the library there at Court!

    Sketch of Blue Butterfly
by Giraud Gemane, Dean of History
    Bards College, Solitude

A fellow Breton, Master Gemane is a renowned historian who serves as Dean of History at the Bards College in Solitude. He’s also a natural historian versed in the flora and fauna of High Rock and Skryim as well as being a gifted artist. These diverse talents serve him well as he maintains the College library. Master Gemane offered to assist me in compiling the material set forth within my letter and accompanying parcel. He proposed an expedition to the regions of Skryim where the Blue Butterfly is found so that I could observe it in its natural habitat. As I had done a favor for the College which enabled them to reinstate the ancient Burning of King Olaf Festival, Headmaster Viarmo agreed to this arrangement.

Master Gemane gathered his travel gear and research materials and seemed eager to be out in the field as we began our trek. We were joined by my longtime companion, Teldryn, who regaled us with tales of Blacklight in Morrowind, Saint Jiub, and chitin armor forged by the master armorsmiths of Morrowind. We also brought along Vigilance, a war dog I purchased at the stables outside of Markarth whose previous owner hinted that Vigilance's ferocity was brought about by feeding him human flesh. I question the veracity of such a claim but having encountered other peculiarities here in Skryim, I wouldn’t be surprised if it were so and vow to look into the matter upon returning to Markarth after our journey.

On initial sighting, the Blue Butterfly of Skyrim appears to be much like the Breton blue butterfly found in High Rock. Both types of butterflies fold their wings vertically up over their backs. Both have forewings and hindwings, with the wing combinations on each side of the body being about the size of my open hand. One immediate difference is the shape of the hindwings, with the Breton blue butterfly having a rounded contour and the Blue Butterfly having a distinctive swallowtail shape. The forewings of the Breton blue butterfly are a bit rounded while those of the Blue Butterfly are slightly angled. The differences in wing shapes between the butterflies may be due to the migration and non-migration habits of each of the butterfly populations. Whereas the Breton blue butterfly tends to remain in the same region its entire life, the Blue Butterfly of Skryim migrates as needed in order to reach the most plentiful sources of food. As you can see from the accompanying map, that region is quite large. The swallowtail shape of the wings of the Blue Butterfly might enable it more readily cover these great distances.

Breton blue butterfly, High Rock                                       Blue Butterfly, Skyrim

Though the bodies of both are varying shades of black, the size of the bodies found on the butterflies is strikingly different. While the body of the Breton blue butterfly is slender and elongated and about the size of my index finger, the Blue Butterfly body is surprisingly short and round, more comparable in size to my thumb. Even though the Blue Butterfly is found in the more temperate regions of Skyrim, this habitat is still cooler overall than the climate of High Rock where the Breton blue butterfly is found. The tundra, clearings and groves where the Blue Butterfly makes its home tend to be windswept at times, quite unlike the region where the Breton blue butterfly is found where the trees provide a windbreak. The plumper shape of the Blue Butterfly could be due to the necessity to maintain a higher proportion of fat stores in order to endure the harsher weather.

Another noticeable difference is that the Blue Butterfly has more prominent antennae than the Breton blue butterfly, with the climate of Skyrim again possibly playing a part. Since a butterfly uses its antannae as a directional aid and to seek out food sources, the longer antennae of the Blue Butterfly may aid it when navigating a region which can sometimes be quite windy.

As you can see, the Blue Butterfly of Skyrim is similar in general color to the Breton blue butterfly of High Rock with the wing upperside main color of both being the brilliant light blue of the sky over Daggerfall Castle at midday. The underside of the forewings and hindwings of both types of butterflies seem to display the same coloration as their uppersides. There are noticeable color differences when taking a closer look and comparing the two. The forewing upperside and hindwing edge of the Breton blue butterfly have a distinctive pattern of irisdescent purple set against black, reminiscent of twilight over the River. By contrast, the Blue Butterfly of Skyrim has a very slim deep blue edge along the forewing upperside with this edge lacking an apparent pattern.

Butterfly Populations, High Rock                                                          Butterfly Populations,Skyrim

A possible reason for differences in wing coloration and patterns could be due to the variation of butterfly populations in both regions. As you know in High Rock one can find not only the Breton blue butterfly but also the High Rock purple butterfly and Glenumbra orange butterfly as well as the Monarch butterfly. By contrast, only the Blue Butterfly and the Monarch butterfly are found in Skyrim so there is less variation in the butterfly population. Since the butterfly population in High Rock is more diverse, there may be more competition for food and habitiat. As a result, each type of butterfly found there may have specific characteristics that make it attractive to mates, which would enable it to reproduce more quickly and so populate in order to maintain claim of food and habitat. This might be the case with the Breton blue butterfly with its unqiue characteristic being the pattern of irisdescent purple and black on a portion of its wings. With the only other butterfly population being the Monarch butterfly, the Blue Butterfly of Skyrim doesn't seem to have to contend with this type of competition for food and habitat, meaning that it might not need to reproduce so quickly, thus there may have been no need for it to develop a characteristic pattern on its wings to attract mates.

The Blue Butterfly lives in the temperate areas of Skyrim and can be found in its tundra, clearings and groves. There are several locations with high concentrations of Blue Butterfly populations which are shown on the enclosed map that Master Gemane meticulously sketched and updated during our travels.

Map showing highest concentrations of Blue Butterfly in Skyrim
by Giraud Gemane, Dean of History
    Bards College, Solitude

I’ll also list the locations here (in order from highest to lowest concentrations) so that you may record them to include in the reference section on enchanting in the library at Court:

~ around Talking Stone Camp (Hjaalmarch)
~ inside Bloated Man's Grotto (Falkreath Hold)
~ around Broken Fang Cave (Whiterun Hold)
~ around Lund's Hut (Whiterun Hold)
~ around Sleeping Tree Camp (Whiterun Hold)
~ around Swindler's Den (Whiterun Hold)
         ~ inside Shadowgreen Cavern (Haafingar)
~ around Whiterun Imperial Camp (Whiterun Hold)
~ around Whitewatch Tower (Whiterun Hold)
~ around Autumnshade Clearing (The Rift)
         ~ around Rorikstead (Whiterun Hold)
~ around Honningbrew Meadery (Whiterun Hold)

Smaller concentrations may also be found in the following locations (not shown on the map):

         ~ near Forebears' Holdout (Hjaalmarch)
~ in and around Morthal (Hjaalmarch)

The best time to catch the Blue Butterfly is during the daylight hours, specifically between 6 AM and 6 PM. The Blue Butterfly was easily caught with our bare hands, though sometimes it would fly away when approaching if not caught immediately. The Blue Butterfly sometimes landed on harvestable flowers and could be caught while it was sitting on the flower.

We noticed that the Blue Butterfly seemed to land on Red Mountain Flowers and Lavender more than any other types of flowers. This indicates that it may prefer the nectar of these particular flowers. The Monarch butterfly, found in the same areas as the Blue Butterfly, could also be seen around these flowers. The populations of the Blue Butterfly and the Monarch butterfly appear to be roughly equal, implying that flowers are plentiful enough in number so as not to cause competition for food between the types of butterflies.

    Blue Butterfly on Lavender flower

Unlike the Breton blue butterfly found in High Rock which yields insect parts every time and only rarely butterfly wings, upon catching the Blue Butterfly of Skyrim one is able to obtain two Blue Butterfly wings every time. Master Gemane told us that if the Blue Butterfly is hit with a magic spell or a weapon that the butterfly will fall apart into two butterfly wings. Though I readily caught the Blue Butterfly with my bard hands, I was reluctant to use such force against a lovely, passive creature. Teldryn, however, had no such qualms and used his ebony sword and fire spells without hesitation. To watch the best swordsman in all Morrowind chasing butterflies and attacking them with his swords and spells was quite a sight! During our time together, I’ve found that my Dunmer companion is full of surprises!

Perhaps the amount of ingredients one is able to obtain from each of the variants is due to the fact that that the wings of the Skyrim Blue Butterfly are less brittle and can therefore be harvested quite easily by even a novice alchemist whereas the wings of the Breton blue butterfly are more delicate to harvest and preserve and so more difficult to obtain. The wings of the Blue Butterfly might be less brittle because they seem to be thicker than that of the Breton blue butterfly, probably as a result of the harsher conditions it must endure on the tundra, clearings and groves of Skryim. The fact that each Blue Butterfly yields two guaranteed wings should prove invaluable to alchemists as well as enchanters (the reason for this to be detailed below).

    Blue Butterfly wings

Our research expedition at an end, Master Gemane returned to the Bards College in Solitude albeit somewhat reluctantly as I believe he enjoyed being out in the field again. Teldryn and Vigilance traveled home to Vlindrel Hall while I journeyed to Whiterun.

Unable to find any information regarding Blue Butterfly wings in any of the local alchemy books, I sought the assistance of Arcadia, an alchemist in Whiterun, who I had previously done a favor for. Over dinner at The Bannered Mare which included a generous supply of Alto Wine, she was more than willing to share relevant information regarding Blue Butterfly wings from an alchemist’s point of view. Thus I will convey here the information which Arcadia related to me:

Through experimentation on Blue Butterfly wings, Skyrim’s alchemists have discovered several alchemical effects by sampling them and by brewing the wings and other local ingredients into potions. Using trial and error methods the alchemists have combined ingredients with matching effects (with one ingredient always being the wings) in order to brew various potions and poisons using Blue Butterfly wings. The alchemists have discovered that Blue Butterfly wings have the same alchemical effects as Chaurus Hunter antennae and Ancestor Moth wings with the advantage that they are safer to obtain than the former and more common than the latter which are extremely rare and found in only one location throughout all Skyrim.

This extensive research has enabled the alchemists to conclude that Blue Butterfly wings contain both beneficial and poisonous alchemical properties, detailed as follows:

     -  A reduction in physical energy. This effect could likely be a defense mechanism that the Blue Butterfly developed during periods of migration. If a Blue Butterfly is ingested by a predator while the swarm is migrating, the predator’s stamina would be decreased to such an extent that the remainder of the swarm could safely escape and continue their journey.

There would be a similar negative effect on the men, mer and beastfolk of Skyrim, preventing them from being able to perform strenuous activities. A Courier’s energy would be reduced, making that individual unable to sprint. A warrior would feel weakened, thus rendering his attacks against an enemy less powerful or making him less effective when bashing an enemy with a shield. An archer might feel drained of the stamina necessary to focus closely when aiming with a bow. Less savory individuals who skulk and sneak about would lack the energy and agility to perform their athletic rolls.

If Blue Butterfly wings are used in concocting a poison to be used against enemies, these negative effects could be used in gaining an advantage during battle. The poison could be applied to the user’s weapon or bow and the resulting attack would drain physical energy from the enemy. This would make what might have been a powerful attack by an enemy less effective and enable one to gain an upper hand against that enemy.

    - A decrease in the ability to regenerate magicka for a short period of time. Similar to the physical effect described above, the Blue Butterfly seems to have developed another defense mechanism which would affect magical creatures that might have otherwise summoned the swarm in order to use it as a means of attack. Spriggans can call both hostile and non-hostile animals to aid them in battle as well as being able to summon swarms of insects to attack. For the Blue Butterfly, their unique defense mechanism damages the magicka regeneration of Spriggans, rendering their magical summoning ability ineffective against the swarm.

Much like the negative effect which reduces physical energy and prevents individuals such as warriors and archers from performing effectively while in combat, the negative effect of having a decreased ability to regenerate magicka would affect mages during battle, possibly preventing them from having enough magicka to cast their most powerful spells. Thus a poison could be applied to one’s weapon and used against an enemy mage, temporarily stifling his spellcasting and opening up an opportunity for an attack against him.

     Potions and Poisons

While the poisonous alchemical properties of Blue Butterfly wings are readily identifiable, the beneficial properties are less defined and more mysterious and still being investigated by renowned alchemists:

     - The enabling of conjured spells to last longer. This effect could be linked to the innate characteristic of the Blue Butterfly (and in fact all butterflies) to emerge from the cocoon which surround it as a caterpillar. The same alchemical property which enables the butterfly to emerge from its cocoon could also affect the emerging, or better referred to as summoning, of creatures from Oblivion. The butterfly expends considerable energy for a lengthy amount of time to escape its cocoon, thus prolonging its emergence. It may be that this specific characteristic correlates with the alchemical property that prolongs the duration of conjured spells.

A potion concocted from Blue Butterfly wings would prove beneficial to mages during combat by allowing their conjured spells to last longer when summoning creatures from Oblivion. This additional time could be crucial when faced with numerous foes in battle.

Experiments done on the populations of butterflies in both High Rock and Skyrim reveal that it is only butterfly wings acquired from the Blue Butterfly in Skyrim which contain this specific alchemical property. The reason for this is unknown and further research is ongoing.

     - The increase in strength of enchantments placed on objects. There is speculation among alchemists that this effect stems from the transformation that takes place while the caterpillar is in the cocoon and this property is carried forth into the butterfly after emerging from its cocoon. It is this unique transformation characteristic which displays itself in the alchemical property of Blue Butterfly wings that enable the transformation of an object through a stronger enchantment (the benefits which will be detailed further below).

Similar to the effect above, this unique alchemical property is known to be found only in the wings obtained from the Blue Butterfly of Skyrim. Alchemists are mystified by this and efforts have been stepped up considerably as this could have a far-reaching effect during these times of turmoil. With rumors of Civil War and the continued presence of dragons, the ability to place stronger enchantments on weapons and equipment could turn the tides of battles and aid in the fight against the dragons.

Naturally as an enchanter, your interest will be on the latter, thus I will focus on the alchemical property of the Blue Butterfly wing that increases the strength of one’s enchanting. Research and experimentation done by alchemists have revealed other ingredients found in Skyrim which have alchemical properties somewhat resembling those found in to Blue Butterfly wings. Ancestor Moth Wings, Chaurus Hunter Antennae, Hagraven Claws, Snowberries, Spawn Ash and Spriggan Sap contain at least some of the same alchemical properties as Blue Butterfly wings.

Alchemists have discovered by combining Blue Butterfly wings with one of the above reagents that a Potion of Fortify Enchanting can be brewed. I will record it here for posterity’s sake though of course as a Master Enchanter you well know that when a Potion of Fortify Enchanting is consumed immediately prior to placing an enchantment on weapons, armor or clothes, the quality of the enchantment improves and allows for stronger magic to be bound to the item to be enchanted.

Blue Butterfly wings and Potion of Fortify Enchanting
    Vlindrel Hall, Markarth

Since conversing with Arcadia, I've been fortunate enough to have been under her tutelage as well as that of some of Skyrim’s local alchemists. Upon my return home to Vlindrel Hall, I’ve been able to brew Potions of Fortify Enchanting myself using Blue Butterfly wings. I’ve found the potions to be quite effective when enchanting my gear, which should prove invaluable when confronting dragons and other types of enemies. Brewing these potions is aided by the relative ease of obtaining two of the key ingredients. As my letter has detailed, the Blue Butterfly is quite common in Skyrim and can be caught fairly easily. Another of the ingredients, snowberries, is also common here in Skyrim and easily gathered though it’s found in its more frigid climes near the snowline. Alas, that’s a topic for another letter!

Potion of Fortify Enchanting and grand soul gem
    Vlindrel Hall, Markarth

When the hostilities involving the possible Civil War have settled down and once the dragon situation has been resolved, I’ll try to send another parcel containing Blue Butterfly specimens as well as some snowberries for you and your fellow enchanters at Court. For now, the single Blue Butterfly specimen and accompanying documentation should serve well enough to provide a starting reference for the enchanting section of the library there at Court. Though I may not be able to send a parcel to you for quite some time, hopefully I can get a letter to you and Father soon. Give my warmest regards to Father and tell him that I send my love.

By the way, there’s a small gift for Father inside the box, a lock constructed from one iron ingot and one corundum ingot (which is obtained from the unique corundum ore found here in Skyrim). When a corundum ingot is combined with an iron ingot to make a lock, it’s found to be exceptionally strong and more resistant to lockpicking. Father may want to install the lock on the safe near his carpentry supplies at the Millworks since even I could successfully open the old lock. You’ll find the new lock wrapped in several layers of leather in the box. I’ve padded the box with tundra cotton to prevent the packet containing the lock from damaging the Blue Butterfly specimen contained in the wisp wrappings should the contents of the box shift in transit.

Speaking of shifting, my companion Teldryn is alternating between shifting around in his chair and standing up shifting from foot to foot. As this lengthy letter has taken me sometime to compose, he’s somewhat impatient and eager to be off. We must hasten to board the carriage from Markarth to Riften if we’re to get there before the Khajiit caravan travels again so that I can get this letter and parcel to Kharjo so that he can arrange their delivery to you.

    Your loving daughter,

I really like the format here, Gail, a lore-letter is very TES and you have included such a wealth of information here that it a fantastic resource for Alchemists to draw inspiration and knowledge from. The layout is lovely, including as it does comparison pictures and a map, all in stunning quality.

There is nothing not to like here, save maybe the fact that when you think about it, alchemists are pretty sick. I mean, who looks at Kynareth's children and wonders what happens if you rip the wings off and eat them? :D I'm just messing, I really enjoyed this :)

Alright, call me impressed. If I have to be completely honest I was reluctant about the topic about butterflies, especially with very little info on them but you tackled this stuff above my expectations, mate. One damn good job right here! Mighty addition to the House of Orsimer Glories' library, all Orcs of Orsinium should come to educate themselves on blue butterflies. :)

Thank you for your kind words. I was nervous about submitting my first contribution here (and still am!) but your positive feedback has encouraged me. Initially I had considered writing in journal format but had seen a WIP submission in the Workshop that was in journal format, so decided to do something a little different.  I thought of correspondence due to all the letters found in Skyrim (though mine may be a bit longer) and how this could be used to present the information as well as a little bit of my character's life and backstory.

It's one thing to eat blue mountain flowers or imp stool and perhaps not so bad to eat butterfly wings (since people in many countries eat insects) but when it comes to giant's toe or hagraven claws, I agree that does sound pretty sick! In order to make my article a bit more lore friendly instead of simply being a game mechanic, I've changed "eating them" to "sampling them" since that can be perceived as "sampling them" as in sampling food from a buffet or sampling through scientific experimentation. It certainly seems more feasible to test a tiny bit of giant's toe and hagraven claws rather than chomp down intact specimens! Quite disgusting!

Thank you for your kind words and positive feedback. It makes me a little less nervous to post here with so many lore knowledgeable members. I'm fairly new to Skyrim, having played it for just over a year, and I've not yet played any of the other Elder Scrolls games (though I have Morrowind and Oblivion in my Steam library) so I'm not very familiar with the abundant lore found in the games, though I love reading the in-game books and wikis. Not being familiar with the extensive Elder Scrolls lore, I thought it might be best to choose a less lore intensive creature and "fill-in-the-blanks," with those blanks being filled as a result of Teineeva's invaluable counsel and several online sites dealing with butterflies.

I totally get it, Gail, and am thrilled (as I am sure Teineeva and Karver are too) that you did take part despite the nerves you felt. By taking part and not giving in to those nerves, I believe you have demonstrated that lore need not be just for the nerds, but can be fun and accessible to people of all levels of familiarity, which I think was Teineeva's intent here. Some of the best lore, indeed the most abundant form of lore to be found in-game, is in exactly the style you have chosen - that is, grass roots, in-character perspectives: Real people in the world looking up at the sky (or at a butterfly in this in case) and asking questions. So I truly hope the Lore Group sees more from you in the future, and that goes for all those who participated and those who maybe didn't but wish now that they had :)

It's not often I delve into the lore section. We tend to have an understanding. I tear lore into shreds and the lore abiding members of TSC scream at me....

There is a rare moment though when the wolf prowls around here when something which catches his eye and triggers the senses. This is a fantastic piece of work here GailOlm.
