Lore: Shadow Magic

  • December 30, 2015

I'm currently researching shadow magic for a story character in TT and this stuff is great. I 'm particularly interested in the philosophical and physics aspects of magic and the idea of the shadow being potential for all things past/present/future. Reminds me of the concept of the multiverse and being able to tap in to all possibilities in all universes at once! No wonder it rivals the power of the Elder Scrolls and why it is so hard to control...

The Craglorn region has an abundance of roleplaying inspiration for mages - the briefly mentioned ancient mage towers, Nedic use of material that absorbed magicka (the precursor to varla stones and Ayleid wells, in my canon), history of the Blackcaster mages, shadow magic, and its border near the Reach, offering much in way of Reach magic.[1][2]

Interesting Forbearealis. By Nedic uses of materials that absorb magika I'm guessing you are meaning ores like Stahlrim? I imagine the early Atmorans made good use of Stahlrim in their armor for their war against the snow elves...

Ores like Stahlrim? I don't know. I'm not too familiar with the material beyond it having magical ice properties. The material I am referring to (nirncrux) has been used to not only absorb magicka but to distribute it (like varla stones), and to create golemesque creatures, and it has been suggested it came from the sky. Furthermore, the Nedes were said to have special interests in the stars, Ayleid wells relying on starlight, leading me to conclude it is a possibility the magic traversed regions and was adopted by the Ayleids; but if Nedes were efficient with magic, why were they so easily conquered?

Remember, the Ayleid did not enslave humans through their own strength. They had Daedric help - and still struggled to do so.
