Philosophical Debate: Caesar's Legion

Because why not? In Skyrim I kill any I find innocent in the wild, because more than likely they will have something that will benefit ME.

The hunters that I find throughout the world are just treasure chests. They aren't going to be using those two wolf pelts and one bear pelt, are they? No, so what reason is there to stop me from killing them? It is free loot, man!

I act way different in games than real life. In Skyrim, it is HARD for me to not kill rich nobles running around in the wilderness. But in real life, I don't even think about killing someone else; it never even crosses my mind.

Would you rather live in an anarchy or a tyranny?

Except the Mojave isn't in anarchy, even with the NCR's attention divided by the Legion.

Right, even the Fiends aren't anarchists. They have a hierarchy.

Or, being the good guy gets (alliteration) boring in real life, so I destroy people in virtual worlds.

Their leader is scum. Troops are troops, and I view all troops as men of circumstance; I don't assume anything is by choice or pure loyalty. They are humans with views I don't yet know, and so I cannot pass judgement on them. I can, however, choose to judge their leader.

Slavery is one of the worst things you can do to a person. It hurts them physically and emotionally. It dehumanizes a life. That is not only wrong, it's incredibly hurtful to me.

I've always killed Caesar. I always will. Dictators want machine men, not men with hearts. They want a controlled populace. You can't let a man like that spread his wings.

While it's true Democracy did have a hand in what happened to the world, that does not mean the solution is what Caesar calls peace. I'd rather be free and in danger than safe and oppressed. If I die, at least I can die as a free man, with my own name and my own dreams, not a chosen name and the dreams of a higher man.

  • July 20, 2015 11:45 AM EDT

    Well, sure.

Who doesn't want that. But with democracy, idiots have the same worth as a smart man. You can see how that hurts the smart man.

That's not fair. Blame the people in power who abuse their power. You must also blame the people who stood by idly and did nothing to stand up to their leaders. A life is a life, and they are all equal.

    But Desert Storm tho.

It's not about what the General wants, it's about what the Brass wants.

Then again it does depend on how loyal the troops are to the country, and to their general.

I don't think most NCR troopers are loyal to the general, or the government. I'm sure the Veteran Rangers wouldn't see eye to eye with a General doing what he wants. They'll comply with him just as long as he follows protocol. There is too many threats to a defecting General. I feel certain that a power trip would end badly for one.

Sorry, I missed this. If you're just being yourself you're not roleplaying. It's just a game, it's not real life. If you want to find a philanthropical reason you could justify it as helping yourself understand those whose moral standards are lower than yours?

And as Gollum says; why not? It does no harm. There's a freedom in not not being bound by rules: in a game you can enjoy that freedom to the full. Irl  - rightly - we are bound by ethics, morals, and law.

Let's just be Khans about it then and sell drugs. Maybe that'll unite the Mojave better than robits and guns.

Even the Master couldn't bring the Wasteland under one flag, the Brotherhood of Steel understands this too. I think it is why they don't bother with what Elder Lyons is trying to do on the east-coast.

The one problem these militaristic nations face is trying to protect an outdated way of life. They aren't adapting to life.

For me, I'd say let the wasteland tear itself a new asshole. I for one do not care what happens in the end. I'll be there to see it happen anyhow.

So what? Are you totally pure? Don't say yes, I won't believe you! No-one is. We all have a our 'dark side, and in a game it not only does no harm to indulge it, but can be beneficial as, in extreme cases, in could prevent its exploration irl. Just my opinion

In the only Fallout I've played through, the 1st one - and this is what I do in most CRPGs - I 1st play a character as much like me as possible, then for my next character choose a RP one, usually randomly selected.

I assume you're a fan of Bioshock then? Or maybe not as it shows a society founded on Randian / Nietzschian princples that has failed. (No spoilers please - I've only started the first 1!) Just curious.

    Only in God's eyes.
And what's not fair about it? That's Democracy. The Greeks who made it up said it was a bad thing. It shares a root with the word "demon".

I liked bioshovk ok. Man has failed. And will always failed. Since the beginning of time.

What even makes this true, I have to ask? Democracy didn't lead America to war, as Mr. House would suggest. China, a desperate nation on the other side of the world, was the one that pulled the trigger, both on the resource war with America, and the nuclear war that followed. That's just a fact.

Or does he refer to the NCR (I don't think so)? Which is still nothing particularly "demonic" in the face of the Legion.

I think player has to got point a to kill person b, while in point b he has to kill person a. All because the player has some semblance of choice-making.

    (sums up bioshock for you.)

You don't see it as a failure of the "democracy is bad for society's elite" philosophy you posted about just now? Or do you just reckon we'll always fail no matter what system we use? Not arguing, just curious :)

  • July 20, 2015 12:47 PM EDT
He's referring to the pros autocracy has to democracy in that America was poorly equipped to deal with things as a group where as he as a single individual was more adept at making decisions. Like which led to vegas still standing.

"A beast with many heads" as opposed to "a beast with one".
  • July 20, 2015 12:50 PM EDT
We will always fail. No matter what system. From totalitarian theocracy, to Marxist socialism. Mankind will fall.

And there are supposed to be no elite in democracy. So that's a red flag as to how effective it is right there.

Ah, so his argument is that democracy left America unprepared. I don't know if I buy that, but it's much more reasonable than the alternative.
