So Vrellend is going through a barrow, he picks the lock and heads to the main ante. So far so good, lets do an inventory check.
    Draugr:- Check
    Spiders:- Check
    Traps:- Check
    Treasure:- Check
    Fresh apples :- Chec....wait what?

Because Skooma Cat (Sheogorath) doesn't allow food to spoil.

Food spoilage to people on Nirn is as strange for them, as food not spoiling is to us.

I know it isnt really a big deal but in my case ill rather see rotten uneatable food, or mummified food, rather than a banquet in every dungeon. Plus I doubt the local Nords are that serious about upkeep.

It didn't make much sense to me at first along with the presence of books that are way younger than the Dragon Wars, but then you learn that the Draugr didn't die so much as slowly waste away over the centuries as they transferred their life essence to the dragon priests. It's kinda weird to include libraries, kitchens, chairs, tables and dining rooms for corpses unless they weren't entirely dead when they were put there.

Most Nordic Doungens were cities actually that's why we see tables and such around the food not spoiling is due to developers,

I liked the Skooma Cat answer better - willing suspension of disbelief, and all that jazz.

perhaps there were previous adventurers and bandits that were using those barrows and happen to get in through an unmarked entrance and are capable of evading all draugr spiders traps.

I've thought another reason, it's the will of the legendary immortal hero. Since in all the game it's hinted through dialogue and various lore and references primarily in Before the Ages of Man last sentence. And in a way you are considered the immortal legendary hero, thus strange phenomenons always follow you, strange events always following you, traps resetting, food that were rotten coming becoming fresh the day they were stored, etc.

This is fixed by the glorious world of mods.

However, I think that there is not spoiled food in the vanilla game because the devs were in a time crunch, or as Jo said, are just lazy.

    Skyrim Developers:

Seriously, Bethesda? ONLY TWO FUCKING DLC'S!!?!

Three, you forgot to count Hearthfire.

I don't think that "The Sims: Skyrim" should count as a DLC.

Maybe, maybe, you could convince me that there were 2.5 DLCs, but that's the absolute max.

Have you ever been in a Nordic tomb? Its like 0 % Humidity, and negative 1000degrees.

Even the thousands year old draugr jokes are still fresh in there.

This question is almost equivalent to: "Why are you able to quest without the need to eat or sleep?"

Does that solve the food problem, or only the sleeping problem?

River water shouldn't have to be boiled, it's fresh; and since Skyrim hasn't had an industrial age, it shouldn't be polluted (except maybe near a city), especially the higher mountain water.

Draugr go out and get supplies every now and then. They just cover up in the skin of dead adventurers before popping to the shops.

As for the books, they get bored occasionally.
