The Game Recommendations/Reviews Thread

  • November 4, 2012 4:19 PM EST

Maybe this will be a little bit better fo u Console playas ova thaya.

So, I think we can all agree that we like games, but sometimes it's hard to tell just which games to get.

Sometimes the big reviewers can have shitty reviews of games, or outdated ones. So - here is the Game Recommendations thread. Here you can recommend games to other gamers with personal experience from a true gamer, not some idiot like this guy - http://bit.ly/Qgk9jt

So, let's start clearing the fog away from those gems out there, or maybe shine them up a little more to what they deserve for other people to see.

I wan't to throw "Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic" a shout out, as well as "Metro 2033"

  • November 4, 2012 4:31 PM EST

Dishonored is really fun, some of the powers are a little overpowered and sneaking becomes way too easy with Dark Vision, but it was really fun, I'd give it 8.5-9. Also Red Dead Redemption, easily my favorite (nonfictional)setting ever, and some awesome gameplay and good story though it feels kinda stretched around the end. Great thread idea, Julian

Amen to Metro 2033. I was so happy with it and I got it for only $5.

  • November 4, 2012 5:02 PM EST

So, I'll recommend a game, and this might turn into a mini-review, but that's kind of what this thread is about.

So, I just bought Killing Floor. A game that I knew was good, a lot of people like it and such - but I didn't quite know just how good it was. So it was and is still on sale, for 75% off till Nov 6th. So I picked it up with a bunch of other games for 5 dollars.

So, I downloaded the game from Steam and started playing it online. This game is based around 6-player co-op survival. You enter the game with about 10 seconds till the 'round'/wave starts. You have a 9mm Pistol that does relatively well against all the starting enemies especially if you get headshots.

There are 10 enemies in the vanilla game, the Clot which is a relatively weak and slow zombie, Gorefast which is like the clot but has more health, runs at you faster after it gets close enough too you, and has a sort of metal blade for an arm that it attacks you with. Then there's the bloat, which is huge and fat guy that spits pretty much acid at you but is only really dangerous at very close range and are relatively weak.  Next is the Crawler, which runs around on four legs and is faster than most enemies and can leap at you. Very weak though.

Next is the Stalker, which is a weak but highish damage enemy that goes invisible until it gets close enough to attack you. Only thing is, it's actually pretty damn easy to see them so they aren't very dangerous unless you're getting swarmed by other stuff as well and you don't see them. Then we have the Siren, which is a slow walking zombie woman who when gets near enough to you, screeches with red waves coming off all around it doing a pretty good amount of damage over a small amount of time. Not too dangerous, usually get picked off before they get to you but can be dangerous if swarmed like the stalker.

Next we have the Scrake, which is your first truly dangerous enemy. These are very resilient enemies that walk towards you until they get close enough, then they charge at you and try to attack you with their chainsaw arm. Very dangerous and if you don't have the right weapons you can get killed by one pretty easily. Though if you're playing as the marksman, you can usually get the crossbow before they come, and the crossbow will kill most enemies in 1 shot to the head, including Scrakes. You'll soak up the kills on all the specials with one of those

Next is the Flesh Pound, this is the most dangerous enemy that will come after you other than the patriarch. The flesh pound is a large specimen (Yeah, the 'zombies' are all called specimens... so that's what you call them, since most of them aren't really zombie-like) that has a yellow light on it's body. If you cause too much damage in too little time, and especially if shooting him with small weapons, he will become enraged and charge and whoever attacked them the most unless that player is very far away (Making it easy to get your friends killed if you're a sniper on a large and open map ) He is highly dangerous with 2 metallic giant screw sort of arms that rotate when it attacks you, extremely dangerous, only takes half damage from bullets and takes extra damage from explosives. Most people don't know that though

Next is the Husk, which is relatively common but not too dangerous. The Husk looks a lot like the Flesh Pound but he is a ranged attacker, the only one other than Patriarch. He has a rocket gun as a hand and he fires these at you, these aren't particularly damaging but they do set you on fire and you can be in trouble if also being attacked by other things as well, it's also really annoying to be finished off by one of these while healing yourself.

Last is the Patriarch. The Patriarch is the boss at the wave after the last (So there is 1 more wave than you think) He has 1600 health, can cloak to heal when he gets too damaged (And he goes completely cloaked, and you can only see where he is if you set him on fire) during which enemies will attack. He has a chaingun and rockets and is extremely dangerous, easily taking out at least one person with one chaingun firing sequence if you can't find cover. Extremely easy to get shot at the last second before you can get into cover.

Now to the other parts of the gameplay. There are perks as well, but they aren't what you think - Each perk is based around certain weapons, as you progress by usually either killing a certain number of zombies with your weapons, doing damage with your weapons, or getting headshots with your weapons depending on the class you progress to Level 6 in your perk. Choosing a perk allows you to have discounts on your class/perk's weapons, maybe do more headshot damage, and even eventually start off with a class-specific weapon that isn't your 'crappy' little 9mm pistol. There is Commando (Assault Rifles), Marksman (Pistols and Snipers Rifles and regular rifles), Firebug (Flamethrowers and stuff), Berserker (Faster walking and melee weapons), Field Medic (Better healing and armor, as well as Medic guns that can shoot as well as heal other players from a distance rather than the little medic shot tool that everyone has), Demolitions (Explosive Stuff, Grenade Launchers), and Support Specialist (Shotguns).

At the end of each wave you go to the trader where you can sell and buy armor, weapons, grenades etc. There is a large amount of weapons to choose from and with the perks you will have something to go for while using the differant weapons. Also, if you use weapons from other perks you can progress in those perks, but you won't get the benefits if you're not using it. So you can still use all the other weapons, they're just more expensive and less effective. So you go through the rounds, earning money and possibly sharing it. The whole time you're playing you're playing with up to 6 players.

Now that's about the gist of the vanilla game, but lets delve into mods.

The first mod I used was KF Gun Game. This adds a competitive mode where you can fight other players in the Gun Game game-mode which you should be firmiliar with from quite a few modern FPS. It's very fun there seem to always be at least 2 servers with a few people in them so it's still pretty active. I really recommend the mod, it's a nice way to Spice up the game. There are also a variety of other mods as well as new gun mods that are great, a good few able to be downloaded from the Steam Workshop.

Next is my favorite way to play Killing Floor. Endangered's Killing Floor Server. This server is extremely modded with new perk stuff and going up to level 60, as well as tons of new enemies, more than tripling probably the weapon amount, and up to 20-25 players at a time with lots of extra hard enemies and sweet new guns. Once you get past all the download time you'll find a ton of new content and maps. Extremely fun, though if you're computer's kinda crappy or your internet connection is, you may have some problems but try it anyway. It's super awesome.

So yeah, there's my Mini-review/maybe fully-fledged review on Killing Floor so far, oh. And don't buy the Community Weapon Pack. Fucking rip-off, you can play with all those weapons on the Endangered Server anyway

See, this thread is already working, I was unsure whether Metro 2033 was kind of a joke crappy but funny game or if it was good.

I shall look out for sales on it, though even if there's one today I wouldn't buy it, Just bought 4/7 games

GTA!!! I'm so hyped for GTA5 next year, I just can't wait for it! I'm nerding out! I'm also really excited for Far Cry 3.

If you haven't played the new Fallout games (FO3 and FNV) definitely check those out.

    For a multi-FPS I really like Red Orchestra 2.

This last year I've been getting some old RPGs on Steam I never got around to buying when they first game out. I picked up The Witcher: Enhanced Edition for a measly $10, and I'm sure you could get it for $5 or less during a sale. Great game, I did most of the sidequests and it took me just over 40 hours to complete. Some parts are a bit tedious and it's a tad buggy but the end was pretty good I thought. Amazing graphics for its time, the combat animations were simply sublime.

I also got KOTOR I and II (Knights of the Old Republic) for $10 each, each a great game in its own right. They're based off the Star Wars RPG made by Wizards of the Coast (the same guys that own D&D) so there's alot of dice rolling and stats and such in the background, but I really enjoyed it. KOTOR I took me about 30 hours and KOTOR II about 25 (only because about 2/3 of the way through the game my character became ridiculously overpowered for some reason - I was killing minibosses in 1 round, I was extremely tough, and I could probably heal about 20+ times before I ran out of force points).

$30 for 100 hours of RPG goodness? I think so.

For FPS games I recommend the Crysis series, it has the smooth gameplay of a COD game but it has some futurisic features that make the game more interesting to play. The MP can be difficult to learn at first but once you're used to it you'll be able to pull of quite a lot of cool stunts to kill your enemies.

For indie games I would recommend Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, this one is currently only for PC though, it's also an FPS but here they use that to say First Person Slasher, it's basically a COD game but in a medieval setting with all the weapons and gameplay mechanics that come with it. It has incredibly good gameplay but it currently has some bugs. A good thing about the MP in this game is that it has objectives in the Team Objective mode, where you for example siege an Agatha castle as the Masons to take their last city and kill their king, Play as the Agatha to capture a city near a sea passage you need accest to from the Mason by clearing the way for your army by lighting a signal fire, taking out the trebuchets of the defenders and last of all use their castle defenses  (ballistas) to help take out the defending fleet. It gives some very immersive gameplay unlike in COD where every mode feels very arcadish.

RPG's, I have 3 I'm really in love with, the first one is Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, it has very good gameplay, much better than Skyrim, it has a good plot although it's a bit short and the world itself is pretty neat as well. The levels offer a lot of secrets and a bit of freedom as well. It's been made by the same people who made Dishonored and apparently you can see the influence of Dark Messiah in it (I haven't played Dishonored myself though). Skyrim is the next one on the list for obvious reasons, Dawnguard is a must, it adds a lot to the game and the new environments are breathtaking. Sorry for PS3 users they can't have it yet. Last in the RPG list is TES III: Morrowind. It has some antiquated gameplay for people used to modern games, but everything in the game makes so much sense, the atmosphere seems so natural and the combination of the music with it just adds up to it's awesomeness. It is a truly MASSIVE world with lots of weapons, armor, secrets, quests, artifacts and Mai'q's first steps into the TES universe. In this game artifacts where truly well hidden and worty of their title, there where many factions with each of them having a lot of quests and requirements to fullfill. Deadric armor was truly something fabled in this game, with only 2 complete sets in the game when both expansions where installed, without them only 1 and a bit.

Well, that's it for me, I could rant and rant about these games a lot longer but I won't, if you have questions about them please ask me, I wouldn't want anyone to feel confused about them.

Well I'm currently playing Mass Effect 3 and in my book it's a winner.

For those that don't know the Mass Effect series is a story of the hero Commander Shepherd a human and member of the Alliance Military who by accident discovers a data cachew which warns of the imminent return of a race of alien beings who will wipe out all life in the galaxy. Shepherd is forced to seek alien races as allies in the fight to save everyone and during his voyagers forma a number of alliances andr recruits additional members to his team on the frigate Normandy of which he is captain

This game is for rpg fans and the combat is challenging as well. Loads of interaction with NPCs allows for plenty of choices about how you develop your character. The game carries a sort of morality judgement meter and depending on what type of decision you make when interacting with NPCs you get to score points towards being either a Paragon or a Renegade. Like a lot of good modern games ME3 tries to be amoral and simply delivers an end game based on the choices you make during interaction with your allies and team members (or the lack of it). Mass Effect 3 encourages (some will be essential) you to recruit allies in your fight to save the galaxy from the Reapers - a race of sentient machines who are highly advanced technically and extremely powerful having wiped out life in the galaxy every 50,000 years or so. Mass Effect 3 delivers a complex array of weaponry and armour for you to acquire both for you and your team members. A number of essential missions will appear during the game as primary objectives to be achieved before the final showdown(s) and a number of secondary assignments which will allow you to increase your experience (levels) and bankroll (weapon and armour upgrades cost money
I have already played Mass Effect 1 and 2 and found 3 (so far) to ba on a par with both easily achieving a 9 out of 10 mark in my estimation. However you do not need to have played ME 1 or 2 to play ME3

Earlier someone mentioned the Witcher, which while listed as a single person rpg is for my money much more fulfilling in the RPG sense than TESIV or V. Again a sword and sorcery saga amid a pretty credible insight and immersion into medieval (14th century) European political history. In the first one which is pretty good value for mony at the moment combat is tough and again the way the game plays out for your character depends on the choices you make.

Witcher 2 is so much better than 1 where as Geralt you continue to play out your part as a professional monster hunter amidst the struggle for dominance between rival monarchs and a group of sorceresses attempting to wield political influence over all the monarchies . Oh and guess what? Humans don't like elves and dwarves very much in this game either

The combat is great and even more tougher in the second game than the first. No namby pamby swordplay like in Oblivion or Skyrim! Try that stuff and you get your ass chopped into dogmeat real quick! Good story reminiscent (slighty) of Baldur's Gate the benchmark for RPGs. But you aren't a hero. As a monster slayer you are pretty much despised as a freak (due to the physical transformation you go through to become one and the mutagens you swallow and drug induced enhancers). Everyone wants their monsters slain but no one wants to keep you around after their problem has been solved . But never fear as a Witcher (monster slayer) you have become impotent and this is widely known by all. This turns you into a sex god the object of desire of anything female on two legs. You even have your own set of tarot cards in one game which is a sort of picture guide to the European version of the Kama Sutra for your nympho partners to select a position from. Do not fear, the erotic conjunctions do not detract from the plot or the game core questline. Neither do the pub brawling contests or the dicing all good fun and thrown in to give the game a bit of atmosphere, and a real feel for the life (and hygiene) in cities and towns in medieval Europe

I disliked The Witcher only because of that horrible combat system, it really is a great, immersive, realistic world, but I hated that boring, simple combat so much I couldn't manage to find the interest to finish the game.

Say whaaaaa?! Really? It's far better than Skyrim's. I thought it looked really nice and smooth. Nothing like dodging, parrying and rollin. I highly disagree that it's "boring and simple"...tbh, Skyrim's is a bit boring and simple imo....but then again, we're comparing apples and oranges on strong points of the gamesMaybe you died alot and got frustrated and quite...lol

The only thing complicated about the witcher and the fighting is the style to choose, fast, strong or group, otherwise it's just clicking the mousebutton when the indicator shows you to. I didn't find it that much fun at all, atleast in Skyrim I get to do fancy footwork and stuff.

Witcher 1 enhanced combat is not that easy, and you need to be able to switch weapons on the fly and combat styles to suit the situation. Witcher 2 (the original) was not easy at all, and rolling around and tactical stuff like that is essential for boss levels otherwise your arse is handed to you on a platter. I got much more out of winning a fight in Witcher than I ever have ineither Oblivion or Skyrim. When I played W2 the first time around there were a lot of complaints about the combat being too hard due largely to the monsters and human opponents AI. Don't know if the enhanced version changed that - I hope not.

Gotta agree about Skyrim combat - repetitive and basic tactics for 1h is block, attack, shield bash strike, defend and so on. The only way I got fun out of it was to go 2h and load that Witcher mod with 2 swords (and light armour) - 1 x silver (1h but accumulates 2h strike bonuses) and the 2h steel sword. The strike rate for both is faster with the silver one really quick. However there is a balancing to that advantage with reduced damage (particularly on the silver sword) Also (with the armour bonuses)it helps you to finish enemies quickly as well as dungeon explore with a torch or spell. Using twin 1h weapons in skyrim works but again there is not enough room for manoeuvre for me within melee combat to give you that "YES" feel at the end of it

I agree with Dieter that the combat is kind of iffy, but overall I love the Witcher story. It was a fun RPG.

I would like to remind people that this is about reviewing/giving opinions on games that are either very new or not quite known etc. - We all know about Halo, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, GTA, etc.

If you don't you're obviously not trying keeping up with modern gaming other than TES  And I don't think anyone is like that here.

I still have Rock of Ages to install and play as well as continuing Vampire: The Masquerade, and I'll make something about Magicka in a little while. I'm still deciding what I want to do right now, it might be Cortex Command, Receiver, or Overgrowth.

Well nice to know where you are coming from Julian even if you didn't specify that in your opening remarks. If you wanted to restrict comments to all new games why didn't you say so in the first place?

You arrogance and lack of ability to communicate your interests reflects on you not us!

If anyone likes puzzle games like Portal I recommend Vessel. It reminds me a lot of Portal 2 and working with the different liquids.

Amnesia is a great game for those who want a good scare and a decent story.

Lol, well in the main thread part I did sort of hint at it through how I said things.

"So, let's start clearing the fog away from those gems out there, or maybe shine them up a little more to what they deserve for other people to see." - Yes I did mostly assume that people would recommend less huge and mainstream games because these are extremely well known and huge franchises. As well as the fact that I am an Indie-game enthusiast and was hoping for a little of that as well.

Maybe I came off as a bit of an asshole with the "I would like to remind people" thing when I wasn't so clear on what I wanted from the thread, if so I'm sorry I didn't really think of it that way.

I played both Portal and Amnesia once and they both seemed like a lot of fun, they're well made and are good at what they are meant to do. I reccomend them to everyone.
