U.O.T.W. Chapter 283 Avalanche

  • Making their way up the stepped path wasn’t as bad as they initially thought, however the fact that Aela and Sotek had travelled up the steps before certainly helped. They both paced themselves, allowing the other two a chance to keep up. As the second hour drew in, Aela noticed Kul-et was starting to struggle with the climb which she wasn’t overly surprised at. The blizzard they had been watching the day before was biting at them for nearly half an hour. Not to mention the particular part of the climb they were now attempting was overly steep.

Aela tugged on Sotek’s arm, getting his attention.
    “Slow down. Kul-et’s falling behind”.

He turned to look at the others. True enough Kul-et was falling further and further back, but even Sasha was starting to struggle.
    “Are you two ok?”

Sasha grumbled under her breath, but Kul-et struggled to catch up even when they stopped.
“I’m sorry, it’s just so bloody cold what with this blizzard”.

Sotek felt her arm, up until that point, he didn’t realise just how cold she actually was.
“You’re bloody freezing, damn it. Sasha, come here”. He felt Sasha’s arm as well, then he felt Aela’s. “You’re ok, but they need shelter. Damn it”. As he cursed out he looked around for anywhere to wait out the worst of the storm.

Aela looked further ahead, where the path passed through a small canyon.
“Look, we can rest up there”.

Sotek scowled at the canyon ahead, like it was mocking them.
“Resting won’t help they need... Oh, you bloody moron. Aela, you got Sasha. Kul-et, you’re with me”.

    Aela burst out protesting.
“What? Why do I have Sasha?” However, she wasn’t thinking clearly, and she certainly wasn’t prepared for Soteks response.

He just shrugged then cast Sasha a smile.
“Fine Sasha can ride me then”.

    Aela immediately snapped at her.
“Like hell can she. Get on and if you fall off, tough”.

Sotek reached out and took Aela by the arms the pulled her close.
“You’re cute when you’re angry, you know that?”

She just glared at him, snarling she cursed out.
    “Ssod off”.

Sotek laughed at her reply, but then put her at ease.
“I’ll carry both of them, all I want Red to do is take point. Just go steady, ok”. He then changed and allowed both Kul-et and Sasha to climb on. Moments later, Scarface followed Red along the path while Kul-et and Sasha did their best to cover themselves up with some extra furs which Sotek had given them.

Over the next half hour, they made good progress, but Red suddenly stopped as she sniffed at the night air. Within moments she shot off along the path towards the large canyon, howling out as she went. Scarface picked up the pace but restrained himself from charging off in pursuit. The three of them could hear Red howling out above the blizzard storm which raged all around them.

Moments earlier Red smelt the scent of a troll ahead, despite the harsh weathers attempt at concealing the creature that stood before her. The troll itself was used to finding the odd wolf, or sometimes even foxes and rabbits. But it usually fed off the goats which ran above the pathway, on the rocky slopes which gave them cover from the elements. This time however it was completely outmatched. Red ignored its two blows which struck her sides and just went straight for the throat. Within moments Red was caked in blood from the beast which she had so easily killed.

She restrained from eating for just a mere second before the smell of fresh blood overwhelmed her. She tore into the carcase, ripping the ribcage to pieces as she fed on the heart and meat.

Two minutes later Red saw a hulking great beast slowly form in the blizzard as Scarface and the others came into view. Scarface speeded up slightly as he saw the remains, then fed on the left-over tissue and muscle while Kul-et and Sasha were still on him.

Kul-et’s eyes went wide as she was unable to turn away from the sight, let alone her hearing bones being chewed up and mauled.
“Oh, I’m gonna throw up. That’s disgusting”.

Scarface just growled at her, but then something else took his attention. He slowly approached the edge then looked across the mountain slopes towards the west. He stepped back a bit then shook his shoulders, letting the others know it was time to dismount. Moments later Sotek changed back then went straight to the edge of the mountain once more. Red approached him, then looked out to where he was watching. Aela changed back moments later then looked once again towards the west. “What?”

“What? What do you mean, what?”

She huffed as she found herself quickly getting wound up.
“What is it your looking at?”

“Do you see those rocky spikes five hundred yards towards the west?”

“Yes, and no, we can’t climb down them”.

“We got our path, look to the east of it. Our side, if you will. Tell me, what do you see?”

“Ermm snow, loads of snow, and a bloody steep slope”.

“Ahh but here’s the kicker what else?” Sotek said, smiling.

“Nothing”. She looked once more to where Sotek was pointing out but try as she might, she couldn’t see anything else. “I can’t see anything, except snow”.

Sotek chuckled as he watched her scrutinise the mountain side for a third time.
“That, Aela, is the point. There is nothing else, no rocks, no rocky spikes, and nothing at the bottom, except snow”.

“That could be a bloody snowdrift! The rocks are probably covered up with several feet of snow”.

“Yes, it could be, but don’t forget the two-hundred-foot drop down a chasm, that’s my favourite. We have so much fun on the way down, what with Red trying to bite me as we fall”.

Aela pinged him on the nose as she recalled when Red and Sotek, who just so happened to be a wolf thanks to Sheogorath, fell off a log which ran across a chasm.
“That wasn’t my fault, I didn’t know it was you. Besides you can’t blame me, that was Red”. She then cast a quick look at the other two. “We don’t have much choice, do we? We need to get them off this bloody mountain, and fast”.

Sotek agreed then made his way back to Kul-et and Sasha.
“We have our route down, but it may be a bit dodgy. But in all honesty, it looks pretty good. Let’s move”.

“How dodgy? Your kind of dodgy?”

“In answer to your question Kul-et, yes, my kind of dodgy. But we got to get down at some point, yes? Or do you want to stay up here on the mountain?”

Kul-et looked down at the slope then gulped.
“Oh, the Nine Divines help us… We’re all going to die”.

Sotek laughed then slapped Kul-et on the back.
“That’s the spirit. But don’t forget, I need you to die before Aela, or I lose a thousand gold”.

She glared at him then she turned to Aela.
“If we survive can I kill him?”

“No, despite him deserving it, I want him alive. He keeps me warm at night”.

“Fair enough, can I cut his tail off?”

    She shook her head.
“Oh no, I love playing with that, you leave his tail alone”.

“Then what can I do to him? You certainly won’t let me tear off any choice parts… Would you?”

“Nope, but ermm, oh hell… You can rip an eye out, his right eye. I like the left one with the scars”.

“Great, that does. I’ll use Vilkas’s broadsword to do it”.

Sotek gulped then hurriedly headed along the stepped path that led towards High Hrothgar. Watching the edge of the mountainside as they progressed along the steps, Sotek mentally prepared himself for the decent down the snowy slope. As he neared the edge he glanced down once more as Aela came alongside him.
    “Oh, bloody hell, that’s steep”.

    “Yes, but is it doable?”

“What? This is your plan. Why in all of Skyrim are you asking me?”

    Sotek chuckled quietly.

“I’m asking you because it’s too steep for us. Scarface, Red and Quicksilver will have to climb down. After all they’re the ones with claws”.

Aela’s eyes went wide at the thought.
    “You fucking what?”

“Well, we can’t climb down, so our ermm, werewolves have to. They’ll be tied together, and I’ll have Kul-et on me”.

Aela looked down the slope then over to the others.
“Kul-et, I changed my mind, push him off”.

All Kul-et could do was stare at the thousand-foot, icy, snow covered slope.
    “Gladly”.

Sotek laughed at he passed Kul-et the rope.
“Well, before you push me off, you got to tie Quicksilver to me then Red to Quicksilver. Once you’ve done that climb on and then you can push me off”

“I’d rather just push you off now. Damn it, this is crazy”. She shook her head at him but complied by tying them together once the three of them changed into their werewolf forms. She climbed on top of Scarface then held tightly on to the rope wrapped around his middle, but the moment he started heading down over the edge she screamed as she saw the drop below. “You fucking prick!”

Scarface initially headed over the edge headfirst, but within a few seconds he changed his position. He was now facing up the mountainside and was slowly heading down the slope backwards much to Kul-et’s relieve as she gripped on to him tightly. Even though she desperately clung on, she could feel gravity trying just as hard to wrench her from Scarface’s back.

However just a few paces later, Scarface felt a sharp tug as he tried to descend further down the icy slope. Both he and Kul-et looked up to see Quicksilver and Red both peering down the slope at them, but neither was actually making any attempt to follow.
“Get a bloody move on you worthless dogs”. The fear Kul-et had, empowered her to yell at the other two. But it also took her mind off her predicament if only for a few seconds. Red and Quicksilver both starred at Scarface who snarled at them both then Quicksilver grudgingly started her descent. Red soon followed, but even she wasn’t happy about the whole situation.

Gradually the three werewolves worked their way down the slope, until Quicksilver started slipping. She franticly tried to dig into the ice with her claws, but the icy surface just kept cracking, refusing to let her gain any grip. Her claws tore through the ice as she started sliding down, gradually picking up speed. Red snarled out at her as she tried to hold Quicksilver’s weight. The trouble was that the rope between Quicksilver and Red was far shorter than between Quicksilver and Scarface. As Quicksilver slid even faster, Red bore the blunt of her weight, and her claws lost their grip as well. A few seconds later Quicksilver managed to tear through a thin part of the ice and actually dig her claws into some rock. Red however was far less lucky. The next thing Scarface knew was Red whining pitifully at him as she slid sideways past him, franticly trying to control her descent. Kul-et stared at her with total disbelief as Red snapped at Scarface, trying to bite him as she slid uncontrollably past.

Scarface growled menacingly at her, but all she could do was whine as the rope tightened and pulled Quicksilver once more down the slope with Red. Scarface growled out at Red one last time as he watched Quicksilver slide past him. He dug his claws in as deep as he could as he prepared himself for the inevitable tugging of the rope. Kul-et however, didn’t prepare herself at all, instead she screamed out at the two of them.
“Quicksilver, you stupid bloody bitch! And fuck you too, Red”.

Moments later Scarface received the sharp tugging from Quicksilver as her weight threatened to pull him down the slope. He clung on desperately, only just preventing himself and Kul-et from being dragged down the snowy ice encrusted mountainside. Red’s weight however was just too much. With a second hard tug from a twenty stone werewolf, Scarface’s grip in the ice was violently shattered as he was yanked down the mountain.

He slid sideways but then had to fight frantically to prevent himself from being pulled over. Kul-et panicked as he nearly got pulled onto his back. She was just about to scream when the inevitable happened, Scarface fell on his side. Kul-et cut the rope then jumped off Scarface while at the same time she gripped the end of the rope and wrapped it around her hand a few times. She looked up at Scarface who was now trying to control his decent, much to her relief, but then she suddenly got pulled downwards as she realised she had inadvertently tied herself to Red and Quicksilver and not Scarface whom she had intended. She screamed out at him as she was pulled backwards and plummeted down the mountainside along with Red and Quicksilver.
    “You bastard!”

Red was the first to hit a fortunately placed snowdrift, rapidly followed by Quicksilver and then Kul-et. Aela changed her form then started screaming at the other two as they found themselves slightly entombed by the snow.
“Get your bloody legs off me, you pair of bitches”.

She started hitting a leg which was pinning her down, making Kul-et holler out.
    “Hey, damn it! That hurts”.

“Hurts? Fine!” The next second Kul-et screamed as Aela bit into her leg, forcing her to move off her as fast as possible. Both Kul-et and Sasha got to their feet while Aela was still sprawled out in the snow just in time to hear a loud pitiful howl as Scarface came tumbling towards them. Both Sasha and Kul-et scattered as Aela could do little as Scarface slammed into her, taking her further along the bottom of the mountainside.

Soon enough they both came to a stop with Aela screaming at Scarface. “You stupid, bloody bastard! You fucking prick. Get the hell off me”. She shoved his arm as she tried to free herself, but she was well and truly stuck. Kul-et and Sasha couldn’t help but laugh at her as she was nearly completely trapped underneath him.

    Sasha smiled evilly at her.
“Well, well. According to the others you prefer to be on top, I guess their wrong. You obviously prefer being underneath”.

“You fucking bitch. Scarface! Get the hell off me” She bit into him but just received a mouthful of fur instead. Sotek changed back then staggered to his feet as he felt totally disorientated. Aela got to her feet as she spat out bits of fur. She then started shouting back at Sotek. “You stupid, bloody moron. You bloody landed on me”. She then punched him in the chest.

“Hey, quit it. I didn’t, Scarface did, remember? And that’s your rules, so there”. He stuck his tongue out at her, which just made her growl at him.

    “You smug bastard”.

“Hey, we’re down here aren’t we? And in one piece. More or less anyway. Come on let’s see where the hell we actually are”. He took point once more as he headed along the base of the mountain. He however never got far when they came across a large overhang. “We’ll rest here for a few minutes”.

Kul-et sighed a breath of relief as she sat in the corner.
“At least it’s warmer here. How come the cold don’t affect you?”

Sotek cast a smile at her.
“I’m lucky, Scarface’s boons prevent me from feeling the cold, even less than Nords”. For empathises he pointed across at Aela who was sitting with a fur wrapped around herself. He looked over at the whole group then headed out towards the trees. “Stay here, all of you. I don’t want anyone wandering off”.

    Aela laughed slightly at him.
“Said the Argonian who wandered off”.

A few minutes later he returned with some wood, then promptly set out a basic fire under the cover of the overhang in the corner so it wouldn’t be spotted.
“You three get over here and warm up. We can’t stay here for long then we got to get going while we have the advantage. Aela, once you’re a bit warmer, come over to me I need a hug”.

    She just grunted at him.
“You need a hug? Oh, poor little you. I need all of this to be over. It’s one big fucking nightmare”. She sat there with the other two, until Kul-et and Sasha both stared at her. Kul-et got Aela’s attention then slightly nodded her head towards Sotek. “Fine what bloody ever”. Aela got up then walked over to Sotek and sat next to him. “You got three seconds”.

“Fine, but not in front of the others. Come with me”.

She turned to face him with complete surprise at his shocking request.

“Oh, you can fuck off. You have to be bloody joking!”

He got up regardless then took her hand and pulled her to her feet.
“All I want is a hug, but not here”. He leaned into her and whispered quietly in her ear so the others wouldn’t hear him. “Full Moon”.

Aela immediately stopped then cast a quick glance at the others, then she looked back at Sotek. He raised his eyebrows at her a few times, then turned his head towards the trees which stood towards the west of their position.
“Ermm, we’ll be back shortly, don’t go wandering off”.

Kul-et looked a bit surprised and commented on Aela’s statement.
“Considering no-one is supposed to go wandering off, there’s a lot of people wandering off”.

Sasha rolled her eyes at them both as she watched them disappear through the tree line.
“You’d think they’d show some constraint wouldn’t you”.

    Kul-et just laughed at her.
“You wouldn’t complain if that was you and him would ya. Here, have something to eat”. She passed Sasha over some leftover food which was basically just some bread and a small piece of wolf meat. “That’s it I’m afraid, we’re out”.

Sasha took the meat, then looked across at Kul-et. She moaned under her breath then cut it up into four pieces as well as dividing up the bread. “Here, you better eat as well. We’ll save them the rest. No doubt their also hungry”.

Suddenly two horrendous howls echoed out across the mountain range, making Kul-et and Sasha jump. Kul-et scrambled to her feet as she peered out into the darkness.
    “Damn him”.

Sasha looked out at where the sounds came from, both she and Kul-et could hear a low frantic clash of metal.
    “What? They found us?”

“No, that’s heavy armour. Scarface you bastard, now what the hell have you got us into? Come on”. She started running towards the sound of battle with Sasha moments behind.

Thanks for pointing out the errors on the recent chapters Ebonslayer. I will get on with fixing them this week. Won't be for a few days though as I am now back at work until Thursday. But rest assured I will fix them then.

    Thanks again pall.
