U.O.T.W. Chapter 157 Nature of the Beast

  •

Tilma sat next to Kodlak and enquired about the reasoning behind his impulsive decision to give Sotek the Harbinger title. She fired off question after question without giving Kodlak a chance to draw breath let alone think of any answers.

Instead, Kodlak tried to distract the maid with a trip down memory lane.

“Tilma” He said as he snatched a parchment from an old chest full of scrolls that were stacked next to him. “Do you remember these? I think these are spells we collected during one of our adventures we used to have. I thought we threw these away years ago”.

Sensing that Kodlak was feeling the pressure from Tilma’s bombardment, Sotek lifted up a second chest and placed it upon one of the small tables. He deliberately bumped it into the side of the table in the hope of drawing Tilma’s attention away from Kodlak. The maid span around and gave him a taste of her cold hard stare as she watched him open the chest. Taking the opportunity to lure her towards him, Sotek waved her over to him.

“I didn’t know you both went off on wild adventures!” As he spoke, he sorted through the contents of the box. Various scrolls and pieces of parchment were laid out on the table in their different piles depending on the scrolls spell class.

There were a few basic ones consisting of various destruction spells but he also found a few summoning scrolls which did fire up his curiosity.

“Tilma?” Sotek asked. “Did you find any of these on your travels?”

The maid recalled a story of one her adventures she had had. She escorted Kodlak to Riverwood one summer afternoon; or rather Kodlak escorted her. A lowly bandit thought them easy prey; a mistake which cost him his life.

As she told of her tale, all the Companions and the Whelps listened with interest, each one picturing their Harbinger fighting the bandit while Tilma bashed him over the head with a stick. When she finally finished telling her story, she started rummaging through one of the boxes, completely forgetting her interrogation.

Leaving Tilma to her own devices of digging through the remnants of the last few boxes and barrels, Sotek went back to finishing his specific task of clearing out the storeroom.

With the help of the other Companions and Whelps, the room was soon emptied, earning a cry of joy from Farkas who was busy enjoying a back rub which he had roped the Imperial Whelp into giving him.

“Oh thank the gods for that!” Farkas said out loud. He was under the impression that their task was done but he failed to take into account the state of the main hall.

Vilkas nodded with agreement. They were both getting fed up with the manual labour.

“I didn’t expect you being Harbinger would result in so much hard bloody work”. He stated as he tiredly gazed towards Sotek.

The Argonian simply laughed and patted him on the back.

“Oh it will be worth it. Tilma, can I borrow your mop and bucket?”

Tilma tutted and brushed him aside as she inspected the room for herself.

“Mop? It needs a damn good sweeping first. Get out of it; if you want something done right...”

Aela giggled whilst she made sure she had remained far enough away from the maid so she wouldn’t get caught for being cheeky.

“If you want something done right then get Tilma to do it!”

Sotek chuckled at Aela’s remark until he turned around to see Tilma’s less than amused face. He quickly picked up a bucked and joined her in the room.

“I’ll give you a helping hand Tilma. Besides, I could do with your advice”.

Kodlak looked on owlishly as Sotek and Tilma entered the room. The Argonian cast a fleeting glance at Aela and gave her a quick wink before he shut the doors behind himself.

While Sotek and Tilma scrubbed and cleaned the room from top to bottom, wiping away old stains and cobwebs, Aela spent the next few hours with her two siblings and Kodlak, sorting out the weapons from the ones which would be genuinely useful to the ones fit only for selling.

When Sotek finally materialised from the room, Aela was the first one to collar him. She waved him over to a long table where several bows were set out alongside each other.

“There’s six bows here we can use”. She stated almost triumphantly. One bow in particular found itself in her capable hands. She drew it back confidently to show Sotek the quality of the six weapons.

He failed to look impressed though. Dismissively he pulled the bow away from her and tossed it on the table with the others.

“No. They all get sold; everything is to be sold unless it’s an heirloom. We sell it all”.

Aela looked down at the bows on the table and tried to work out what was wrong with them. She had personally checked each one and for the life of her she couldn’t see why Sotek turned his back on them so quickly.

“But... these are good bows! We can use them for the Whelps; can’t we?”

Sotek drew an arrow from the quiver on Aela’s back and picked up the bow which she seemed so proud of. He drew back the drawstring and launched the arrow across the hall where it thudded into a pillar.

“Yes, they are good bows. They will fetch a good price. Sell them! I have other plans to arm the Whelps”.

With the she-wolf by his side, Sotek made his way around Whiterun, selling everything he could. When they arrived at Dragonsreach, Sotek slightly bowed in respect to the Jarl but Balgruuf wasn’t approached. Instead, Sotek made a beeline to Farengar’s quarters. Once he sold a few scrolls to the mage, he sought out Proventus. Aela hung back and found herself shrugging to the Jarl as he mimed a few words to her; asking about Sotek’s purpose in his visit. At this point he hadn’t explained anything to her so she was in the dark just as much as everyone else.

She did chance upon seeing Sotek hand over two bags of gold to the advisor but even then Sotek never said anything. He just whistled at her, calling the she-wolf to his side as he made his way back to Jorrvaskr.

When they entered the compound, Sotek walked around the hall and made his way up the ramp leading to the Skyforge where Eorlund was hard at work. Sotek had a quiet word with him, leaving Aela by the ramp. For around ten minutes Eorlund and Sotek talked what seemed to be a matter of business to Aela as she saw Eorlund lay out several different metal bars. The Huntress watched with interest as Sotek picked out a few much to Eorlund’s disgust. A final handshake seemed to settle the matter between them and once again Sotek joined Aela’s side.

An hour later, just as the hall was returning to some degree on normality, the Companions were disturbed by a loud banging on the door. Aela abruptly opened it to see a rather smug looking Proventus standing there peering back at her.

“Ahh Aela. The furniture is ready; it is short notice but Sotek said they would suit his needs. When can you collect them?”

Aela glanced across the room to Kodlak and scrunched her nose up at the ‘pompous overbearing’ individual who she regarded with as much contempt as he seemed to have for her. Kodlak waved his hand at the young she-wolf, telling her to move aside so he could see Proventus rather than talk to a door.

“Proventus? Collect what may I ask?”

Proventus complied with Kodlak’s enquiry and rolled off the different furnishings Sotek had just bought.

“Two beds, two chests of draws and three wardrobes. They aren’t the best pieces, quite basic in fact but Sotek seems happy with them”. Proventus then whispered almost sneeringly at Aela, leaving her with no doubt that he was referring to herself. “Like the certain stock of a Nord; poor at best”.

Sotek appeared behind him, making him jump when the Argonian called out to the other Companions.

“Farkas, Vilkas take four whelps with you. Proventus, we’ll collect them now”.

The advisor of Jarl Balgruuf stepped to the side and held onto the doorframe so tightly his knuckles turned white. He was fearful that Sotek had heard his comment to Aela but even if he did hear it, Sotek never reacted.

Aela reached out to grab Proventus’s arm and give him a piece of her mind but Sotek took hold of her outstretched arm and dragged her away by her wrist while he talked to Tilma about the room they had just cleared before Aela could say anything to Proventus.

Once the furniture finally arrived, Tilma set about organising where the various different pieces of furnishings would go; leaving Sotek and Aela to finish off clearing up the main hall.

Within half an hour, the hall had once again come alive with the various conversations and chatter of the Whelps and Companions bar Sotek and Tilma who were behind the doors to the spare room giving it their final touches. All the clutter had been sold for gold or given away for meaningless scrap minus the heirlooms which Kodlak had the Whelps distribute around the hall so they were on display rather than gathering dust in the shadows. By the storage room doors were several empty sacks which Sotek had brought up from the Undercroft; although they were at the time stuffed full with a diverse collection of seemingly miscellaneous items.

Sotek eventually emerged from behind the double doors and gathered everyone around except for Kodlak who remained in his chair due to his leg.

“Can I have everyone’s attention please? Tilma, would you care to have the honor?” He bowed down slightly as a means of courtesy, clearing Tilma’s approach to the room.

The maid gleefully smiled back at him before pulling the two doors wide open for everyone to see exactly what they had been doing for the best part of the day.

All the Companions and Whelps were greeted by the two beds that were positioned in the alcoves either side of the store room. Each bed had its own small cabinet along with a chest of draws. There were even two wardrobes positioned against the walls nearby. A third wardrobe was set in the middle of the room along with two bookshelves. Each shelf was laden with clean linen wraps and a large selection of healing potions and vials with ‘cure disease’ written on them. On the back wall was a large wooden table along with a few chairs.

Sotek had thought that the others would see what they had created and understand however Farkas didn’t follow any of it. As he stepped inside he pointed to one of the beds.

“Ok... you made up two beds. But why, unless you’re telling me that’s where you and Aela are going to sleep. Then why have you separated the beds?”

Sotek chuckled to himself and dismissed Farkas’s chain of thought.

“No doubt when we really fight with each other we will sleep here Farkas. No, it’s the Jorrvaskr infirmary! When someone is injured, instead of us all making a bed up here in the hall there are two already prepared. However we do need to see how effective the layout is. Ahh, Kodlak. Would you do me the honour of trying it out for a few days? Let’s pretend you got a bad leg. Can you hobble over to a bed and rest up?” With that Sotek smiled at him.

Kodlak chuckled back at him. The Argonian’s audacity and perceptiveness of the Companions and their needs caused the old Nord to smile. He pulled himself off the chair and called one of the two brothers towards him.

“I expect I can manage a realistic hobble. Farkas, could you lend me a hand please?”

With a big stupid grin on his face due to the fact that he knew Kodlak actually had a bad leg, Farkas walked over to Kodlak and helped him as he limped his way across the floor to the bed.

Later that evening, the Companions and the Whelps were downstairs, except for Aela and Sotek who were both lying down in each other’s arms by the fire pit. They were quietly talking amongst themselves in what initially began as nothing more than light hearted conversation. Kodlak, who was resting in one of the beds in the Infirmary, listened to them as they chuckled at each other’s stories and silly comments.

Aela started giggling then she gave out a loud dirty laugh. Kodlak couldn’t hear what she had said but he recognised the sleazy tone in her voice. Before events got out of hand he called out to them both as a reminder that he was there.

“Don’t start getting amorous with each other. Remember I’m here. I’m too old to listen to this”.

Sotek chuckled and boisterously called back at the Nord.

“Really Kodlak! There’s no need for that kind of language. I have you know my mate is a lady”.

Kodlak scoffed at the remark and called back jestingly albeit very loudly.

“Haa!! Really? Aela? A lady? It’s about time she started acting like one”.

The she-wolf in question sat bolt upright in shock as if Sotek and Kodlak had between themselves decided upon Aela’s entire future. Fleetingly she glanced at Sotek then her focus fell upon the door to the Infirmary. She cried out in indignation at the near horrifying suggestion.

    “What? Why?”

Sotek momentarily looked up in surprise due to Aela’s outburst then promptly fell about in hysterics over the look strewn across his mate’s face. She gritted her teeth then laid into him, punching him in the stomach.

“Shut the hell up. You sound like a stinking hyena”.

The two Companions started play fighting although it was clearly evident to Kodlak that their roughhousing had a definitive sexual undertone just by the various grunts and noises as they fought for dominance over one another. As Kodlak listened to them, a faint smile spread across his face as he thought back to his early years and the times when he too drank from such a cup as the two Companions who played and flirted in the hall.

His smile soon faded as he turned to more important issues, ones which needed to be addressed. Wasting no time, he called out to them.

“Before you both get out of hand, I would like a word with the hyena. Sotek... sorry, Harbinger, can I have a word?”

Sotek freed himself from Aela’s grasp and rolled her off his stomach so he could get up on his feet. Leaving her sprawled out on her back laying on the floor, he headed across the room and entered the Infirmary and addressed Kodlak, correcting him in the manner in which he had initially called the Argonian.

“Kodlak it’s Sotek to you; you don’t have to call me Harbinger”.

“But you call me it when I hold the title, do you not? Could you close the doors please?” Kodlak replied. He knew the importance of leadership and titles. He couldn’t ask for the respect of others if he didn’t respect them either.

Sotek did as he was requested and closed both doors after giving the she-wolf a curious shrug of his shoulders before returning to Kodlak’s side.

“Sometimes I do, only sometimes”. He fell quiet and sat on a chair by the table and looked upon Kodlak who was now sitting up in his bed.

Kodlak nodded, acknowledging Sotek’s admission of his own wavering reverence of Kodlak and his title. Kodlak knew there were times when Sotek had messed up but there were also times when he had distinguished himself. Such moments easily outshone the darker days.

“You’ve done well today. Whatever made you think of this I would never know but it’s certainly been needed. Well done”.

“Well done, however...” Sotek said as he smiled back at Kodlak. He knew there was more to the speech. Kodlak had the glow of pride about him, it easily filled his cheeks yet there was a hesitance in his voice. Sotek could almost taste it.

“Yes, well. Farkas and Vilkas, they aren’t archers; they won’t like using a bow”. Kodlak was almost taken aback by Sotek’s response. He had started to get used to the Argonian and his insight yet there were times Sotek still surprised him.

“Harbinger, ermm Kodlak; I know more than most that you can’t change the nature of the beast. Take Aela, she is always going to fight with me. Whether it’s at the table, in the bedroom or out on the plains it makes no difference, that’s who she is. Farkas and Vilkas are going to be no different either but they will learn to use a bow and they will carry it with them. I hope that they never will need it, but they did today. Make no mistake, today we were lucky. Next time? Next time we won’t be lucky, we’ll be prepared”.

Kodlak sighed and rubbed his sore leg as a reminder of just how lucky they were.

    “Just don’t expect miracles”.

Sotek chuckled and lightly slapped his knee with the palm of his hand.

“I’ll be happy if they hit the target. It won’t matter if it’s even on the edge; that will be enough”.

Kodlak turned towards another problem, one which he knew would lie at Sotek’s door lest he offered assistance. He was aware that Sotek wouldn’t let pride get in his way. If he needed something then he would happily work for it. However there were only so many hours in a day. With this in mind, Kodlak enquired about Sotek’s finances and his plans to implement the new training.

“How are you going to pay for everything? To start with there’s all the bows. Arrows for everyone, they aren’t exactly cheap, not the quantity you’re looking for. You’ve been examining their armor as well. You can’t spend the next month working away at the forges in order to pay for it all”.

Sotek’s reply was a loud dejected huff. It wasn’t focused at Kodlak as such but rather the realism of Sotek’s own despotism.

“I’ve saved up a few thousand; that will suffice for the most part. I’ll have to work the rest off I suppose; minus of course what we sold from the equipment in the hall”.

Kodlak frowned at Sotek’s answer and gave no regards to hiding his reaction. His next choice of words caught Sotek completely off guard to the point where all the Argonian could do was stare at the doors in astonishment.

“That was for your land. Oh don’t look surprised; Aela spoke to me about it. She was worried you would leave Jorrvaskr”.

Kodlak noticed Sotek’s reply was just as anxious as Aela’s was when she first spoke to him about the situation she and Sotek found themselves in. The Nord sat in silence and listened to the Argonian’s near trembling voice.

“She’s worried about a few things. For instance, the fact that we can no longer sneak out and hunt at night; she can’t handle it. Pass the blame to her why don’t you; we can’t handle it. She’s worried that you’ll find out. I don’t want to break my word with you Kodlak but what am I supposed to do when I swear to you that we won’t go hunting and by this action I tear Aela apart?”

Kodlak sadly looked at Sotek. Only now did he realise he had asked for the impossible.

“My heart aches over that conversation we had Sotek. You are right; you either break your word or your mate’s heart. No, this will not do, not at all”.

The bulky old Nord moved off the bed and sat in one of the chairs by the table where Sotek was sitting. He leant back and rested his limbs on the armrests and lifted his chin up to examine his subject who sat before him like a king gazing across his magnificent hall. Kodlak leaned across and began to whisper once he beckoned Sotek to move slightly forwards so they wouldn’t be heard by so much as a fly on the wall.

“I’ve done you an injustice Sotek; to both you and Aela. I followed you last night and saw you hunt. That’s why we were on the fringe of the plains when the dragon attacked. Listen carefully before you say anything; I’m not overly proud that we spied on you both but Tilma insisted”.

Sotek sat bolt upright and raised his spiky eyebrows. He lifted up the tip of his boot and quickly pressed it down to trap his tail underneath it as the tail was thrashing around. Now that it was held in place, he could once again concentrate on the conversation.

“What? You followed us out there? On the plains?”

He buried his face in the cups of his hands and loudly groaned. The fact that Kodlak hadn’t trusted them wasn’t something the Argonian was concerned about. It was the realism that he was being watched when Scarface took his mate.

“Oh Hircine... you ssaw both Sscarface and Red? Together? When they ermm? Oh by the niness Kodlak... and uss! Aela will kill you... and me! We’re both dead. You don’t tell her that. I’m just thankful Farkass wassn’t there... crap! You all were!! I’m dead... I’m a walking corpse. Our skins are going to adorn that bitch’s wall. You’ve killed me, you’ve slaughtered us both”.

As the Argonian tried to take it all in, one thing struck him. Kodlak has mentioned Tilma. With a look of near horror, Sotek looked up at the Harbinger.

“What’s Tilma got to do with all of this? Don’t tell me she was there too?”

Kodlak waved his hands in denial. He looked just as horrified as what Sotek did over the thought of Tilma being there on the side of the mountain.

“No! No she wasn’t. She had however heard you both talking when you told Aela that you can’t hunt anymore. She said you would both try, but she knew you wouldn’t keep your word. Tilma also overheard you say that you might not handle it. She said you would go out one last time and she insisted that I follow you. The only reason I did was so I could see what I was actually asking from you both. Well I do know; and what I ask is impossible. With that in mind, what I ask now is you try to keep the hunts to a minimum. You must keep Scarface and Red well away from Whiterun and the towers. Stay near your spot on the plains. Also, don’t let Aela know that I know. She will take it as a sign of my approval; I don’t approve, but I know you must”.

Sotek stared blankly at the door for a few moments to give himself a few precious seconds to figure out the actual situation he found himself to be in. Turning back to Kodlak, Sotek pointed to the doors, knowing the she-wolf was waiting in the hall on the other side of it.

“And how the hell do we sneak off without you knowing?”

Kodlak tutted in response to Sotek’s outburst. He waved his finger at the Argonian and gave him a few home truths although he was sure to include a possible answer to the Argonian’s problem.

“Don’t give me all that innocent bull crap! You’ve been running around like a bloody pirate with that wench of yours by your side for months. How do you sneak around without me knowing? Humph. You two have been doing it for months. Still the illusion it seems, needs to be maintained. Ahh yes..... The Underforge... Aela often goes there at night for half an hour or so, especially when she’s troubled. What she doesn’t know however is this; at the back of the cave there is a secret exit. It leads to the rocky area to the east leading out to the farms there. Her mother used to use it to go off on her hunting trips. You and Aela can use it to sneak out. All you need to do is tell Farkas or Vilkas Aela needs time in the Underforge. They know not to disturb her when she’s in there. That way you both can sneak off and be back in the morning. No one will be the wiser, myself included”.

Sotek leaned forwards and placed his elbows on his legs while he cupped the palms of his hands together so he could lean his chin on them to support his head. He silently watched Kodlak for what seemed an eternity before he spoke.

    “Ermm, is that all?”

Kodlak raise his own eyebrows and stared back owlishly at the Argonian. He had thought their conversation was concluded yet Sotek made him think there were other things to discuss. Having no clue what so ever as to what such things were, Kodlak found himself having little choice but to ask.

“Is that all? What do you mean is that all? Do we have anything else to talk about?”

Sotek shrugged and met Kodlak’s gaze head on. As he spoke he looked deep in the old Nords eyes.

“You’re not Aela’s father but you are the closest thing she has to one. When you said you watched us out on the plains, I was kind of expecting a father protecting his daughter speech. I never got one; why?”

Kodlak slowly nodded in understanding to Sotek’s expectations of the Nord and the conversation the Argonian had tried to prepare for. With a wily grin he said.

“Give me cause to and we’ll have that conversation soon enough. Now I expect Aela’s ears are flapping so much she’ll be having ear ache. Go on, she’s waiting for you”.

Finding himself with little to say over the veiled threat, Sotek got up from the chair and exited the room, leaving Kodlak in peace.

Aela was indeed waiting for him although she hadn’t moved from their spot near the fire pit. Her arms and legs were still spread out and she blankly stared up at the rafters until such a time that Sotek returned. Turning her head towards him, without moving the rest of her body, the she-wolf called over.

“What did Kodlak want? Is he ok?”

Having to think of a quick answer, Sotek said the first thing that came into his head.

“Yes he’s resting now. He just said that because I’m Harbinger, I can’t take the law into my own hands. He was referring to us both wanting to go out hunting at night whenever we wanted to”.

Upon hearing this, Aela rolled on her side, putting her back to Sotek so she could see the doors to Whiterun. She stared past them and sadly looked beyond the walls of Whiterun to the plains which she considered to be Red’s home. The she-wolf’s stomach felt tight and a dull aching pulled at her heart as she tried to imagine the wind on her face and the grass on her feet.

Fighting back a homesick tear, she sadly whispered to her mate.

“I know. I can’t do this, I need it, Red needs it. So does Scarface; you can feel it calling you; the plains.  I know you can, I can see it in your eyes. You’re more in touch with your wolf spirit than they realise. These walls, they used to make me feel safe. Now they are little more than a cage; a cage of wood and stone”.

Sotek laid down behind her and slid his arm across her waist to hold her. She gripped his arm tightly squeezing it into her chest where she held it fast, refusing to let him go.

Sotek moved tightly against her and pulled her backwards by the hips, leaving no space between them both what so ever as he cradled her body in his. The Argonian’s tail forced itself between the calf’s of Aela’s legs and proceeded to coil around one of her limbs. With his free hand, Sotek wiped a single tear from Aela’s cheek and spoke.

“Yes, yes I do. Give me a few days; I’ve something to show you which will make all the difference. Red and Scarface will be alright. You leave them to me. You have to swear though; you won’t use it without me. We have to keep it a secret from Kodlak and everyone”.

Aela fell silent for a few moments then she twisted her body around so she could face him. Instead of looking up at him though, she buried her face in his chest and sadly mumbled back at him.

“We won’t be able to sneak out. Kodlak will know”.

Sotek kissed the top of her head and gently shook her

“No he won’t. I found something to prevent that. We can’t make a habit of it though. We can’t go regularly. If we do they will find out so we must only go when we really need to. Now, promise me you won’t use it without me”.

Aela stared in his eyes and searched for any clue as to his meaning but her search for answers was in vain. Having little choice and full of desperation she agreed.

    “Ok! I promise; but I don’t understand”.

Sotek leant over and slowly and tenderly kissed her on the lips.

“You don’t have to understand. You just have to trust me. We’ll be ok. So will Red and Scarface, you’ll see soon enough”.

Sotek then slapped Aela on the backside and started to climb up on his feet. He gave her the offer of an outstretched hand, helping her up off the floor.

“You got to get some sleep; you’re going to need it”.

Aela took in a long deep breath then breathed out as much of it as she could, clearing out old stale air before breathing in once more, filling her lungs anew. Now she felt somewhat better, she turned to her mate and enquired to the reason for their having to head to bed.

“Oh? And why is that? You’re not thinking of sex so what’s going on in that mind of yours? Hmm?”

Sotek chuckled and shook his head at the young she-wolf.

“Sex? I wish. Nope; tomorrow you’re teaching Farkas and Vilkas to use the bow”.

Aela helplessly stared at a mark on the wooden flooring and grumbled back at Sotek.

“Oh hell. That’s ok, you can bloody well help”.

Sotek looked at the spot where Aela was staring and bitterly whispered back at her.

    “Aww Hircine damn it all”.

As Kodlak listened to them talk, he allowed himself a smile. The Nord quietly chuckled to himself before settling down to sleep.

“Tomorrow will be an interesting day”. He murmured as he closed his eyes.

Thanks; I've said it before I know but I do appreciate you taking the time to point out errors and such. It's helped so much in the past.
