U.O.T.W. Chapter 58 Where Waters Run

  •

As they passed the stables, Sotek gathered up a few plants. There was one in particular that he was quite pleased to find.

“Here eat this”. As he spoke he passed Aela a Purple Mountain Flower.

    She laughed at the suggestion.

    “I’m not eating a flower”.

Sotek ate one but still held his hand out to her. As he looked at her straight in the eyes he said one word.

    “Coward”.

“I’m not a bloody coward. Here give me the bloody thing”. She snatched  it off him all the while she had a big grin on her face. As soon as she ate it though she felt like she had more energy. “Oh wow, that’s weird”.

Sotek laughed as he watched her.

“It helps restore your vigor. Gives you more spring in your step”.

She saw another plant of the same type then picked it and divided it into two halves. She eagerly swallowed the one half then passed the other half to Sotek who promptly ate that as well.

“Show me another one”. She said with a great big beaming smile on her face.

Sotek looked around the area which they were in. The meadery was just to the south of them but what caught his eye was one of the farmsteads. He started walking towards it then stopped as he pointed over a small stone wall.

“Ok, but you will have to get it. You see the wheat bails over there? Go and grab a few handfuls”.

“Why do I have to get it?” She asked. She looked around but she couldn’t see any obvious reason as to why Sotek was so adamant that it was her who had to fetch the wheat.

“They won’t let me near the crops”. Sotek stated as he shuffled on the spot while he stared shamefully at the ground.

Aela burst out laughing then vaulted over the wall before proceeding to pull out a few strands of wheat from the bails.

“Here you go. Oh look! No flames”.

Sotek snatched some wheat strands out of her hand then started to break off the actual wheat itself.

“Just eat it and shut up!” He pretended he was annoyed as he handed her a few pieces of the crop.

Aela looked at him, then smiled. She knew he was messing about. After she ate some she felt better. Not stronger or anything just generally better. Almost as if she was warmer inside.

    “What’s that do?”

“It restores health. Now a warning… You can’t just go around trying anything. Some things have adverse effects while others are poisonous”. He then explained a little about  the various different ingredients which they may come across on their travels.

She looked around at the different plants and mushrooms.

“I’ve never thought about the plants before. Will you teach me?”

Sotek walked over to her and gave her a hug.

    “Ok… You’re officially a novice Alchemist”.

“Yaay” she cheered as she smiled broadly.

Soon afterwards they reached the stone bridge that spanned the river between Whiterun and the Throat of the World. Sotek dropped his pack on the bridge then jumped in the river from the side of the bridge itself.

    “You coming in?”

Aela shook her head as she watched him submerge himself. The water had icy particles along the far bank which made her face cringe.

    “No way... That waters freezing”.

Sotek just laid in the river for five minutes as the icy water cooled him down. Afterwards he climbed out then suddenly ran up to Aela and grabbed her. She screamed at him between laughs as he lifted her up.

“Get the hell off me! Let me go you bastard, you’re soaked”.

Once he let her go he backed right off just as she threw a punch at him causing her to only just miss.

“Now who’s a coward?” She shouted as she mocked him.

She glanced at the river once more as a thought plagued her mind.

“Why don’t the cold bother you? Argonians are from Blackmarsh. It’s not exactly renowned for its harsh winters”.

Sotek walked up to her and shrugged his shoulders.

“I’m not sure why to be honest. The only time I really felt the weather was when I went to Bleak Falls Barrow. I thought myself that I’d have more problems with the cold”.

“You haven’t had any problems with it. Hell, when we went hawk hunting you gave me one of your furs”.

Sotek felt a bit startled from her comment.

“You wasn’t supposed to know that. I tried to do that on the quiet”.

She chuckled slightly as she smiled at him.

“You do everything on the quiet”.

Sotek shook his head as an evil grin broke out across his face.

“Well according to the other Companions and by the banging on the walls, not entirely everything”.

    Aela turned away blushing.

    “Shut up”.

Heading back bypassing the farms, they saw Farkas with some of the whelps who were standing over a few dead wolves.

“Let’s go say hi”. Aela stated as she started walking over towards them with Sotek trailing close behind.

The howling issue gives me great scope to add amusement and prevent the chapters turning sorid. Thanks to chapter 25 and 43, all I need to do now is mention howls and the picture is set without even writing about the two of them.

Wasn't hard to enjoy this chapter, even if you know there's something bad around the corner.

Well, they definitely need better walls, 1 meter stone doesn't really cut it..

Howls aside, at least it shows how close their connection ...  more

And Sotek does appear to be a curious argonian, looking forward to more on this as well as his mysterious adversaries :-)

Definitely a storm coming, though a relaxed moment never hurts. Well written Sotek, this was a nice read :-)

    One thing:

will you teach me?” - I think you may want this to start with a capital...
