SotF: Just a Formality I

  • She woke up, beads of sweat dripping down her brow and found her hand clutching the knife she kept under the pillow.

She sighed. That dream again, she thought.

She rose from her bed and looked around – daybreak had yet to arrive and her brothers and sisters were still sound asleep, their snores and mutterings like wind trailing against leaves. She uttered a curse and buried her face in her pillow.

She tossed and turned, reminding herself that she needed to get some sleep but the more she tried the harder it was to get a wink. The linens brushing against her skin did little to help neither did the crackling hearth.

She gave in and admitted defeat. She pulled the knife from underneath her pillow and ran her finger on the edge slowly; a cut would be an embarrassment but an even bigger embarrassment would be a cut from with this dull edge.

Fashioned from a steel spike, the blade was just the pointed end flattened and sharpened, and the handle was the post bent to form a guard. Simple, sturdy … Just the way she liked it - just as how she would of have prefered it.

Annoyed, she rose again and spun the knife twice in her fingers. She laid the weapon flat on its side and crossed her legs, eyes closed.

The rhythm of her own heartbeat and her breathing the only thing on her mind…

" She woke up with beads of sweat on her brow and her hand clutching the knife she keeps under her pillow. "
Probably one of the best opening lines I've heard in a while! Great start to a story, Delta. =)

Not going to lie; that is also one of my favourite lines that I've ever written.
